Remote Access on UnRAID

I apologize if this has been asked. I am a relative newbie to all of this, having build an UnRAID NAS about a year ago with help from this forum. It's been working alright (few minor issues between OSX and UnRAID wrt permissions and strange Plex issues). Now I'm looking to increases it's usefulness. I'm about to not have access to it for around 5-6 months and I would like to maintain access to all of my files. Been reading a lot about buying a router with Tomato/DD-WRT flashed to it to install a VPN, but after that I'm getting lost.

 

I'm running UnRAID on my NAS, OSX on my laptop, and am leaning towards getting a Asus router (currently have an Airport Extreme which I already know doesn't support VPNs). Is there a guide anywhere with how to configure the router/what I need to install on the router, my laptop, NAS? Also, any recommendations on what to use? I've seen OpenVPN, but that's about it. Especially looking for a guide that's pretty step by step. As mentioned above, I'm pretty new to all of this and the extent of my networking experience is connecting one end of and ethernet cable to the back the NAS and the other to the back of my router. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Not sure if this goes in here or networking.

Have you looked at nextcloud? should be easy to setup and fairly secure. Normaly network connections methods like cifs/smb and nfs aren't very secure and will be failry slow over wan.

I'll take a look at next cloud. Thanks. Though I should say part of what I'm looking for is to be able to address the UnRAID page so I can restart Docker containers. Plex on my UnRAID server has a bad habit of becoming undiscoverable. I have yet to find a way to make this not happen (could possibly be DNS unbinding from what some forum posts indicate, but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet) and the only way I've found to fix it is to restart the docker.

You can portforward the unraid webgui, but you should really use a vpn here, and the webgui probably isn't that secure.

Yeah, that's why I was asking about VPNs in the original post. From the research I've done I see a lot of people talking about doing it, but very little I can understand as to how to do it, hence my confusion and request.

You can do what I do and port forward your unRAID server and run teamviewer its a quick and less painful way of accessing you unRAID box I had loads of problems and just never seemed to get openVPN to run on it but it is due to me more so than unRAID itself

I use the vpn that comes with Delugevpn by routing all the traffic through that. Then on top of that I use ZeroTier. The only thing I can't do is access web uis from my computer outside of my actual network. I set up some duckdns tings for radarr and sonarr and that's it.

I use the OpenVPN docker to connect to my local network and from there, I can access my shares, the web-ui and anything else on the local network, SpaceInvaderOne has a great video on setting it up.

Why would you be port forwarding and running teamviewer?

Teamviewer's port is 7 or 9 for WOL access from outside the LAN, is there another way?

That's not teamviewer specific, it's standard.

Why are we talking about WOL though? Did the OP mention it and I missed it?

 

He wants remote access to his unRAID GUI. Teamviewer by itself (with no port forwarding) would typically be sufficient. Hell, he could have Teamviewer running inside a VM if he wanted, that way it's always running.

After re-reading my post my explanation was horrible what I meant was I setup WoL on my pc I forwarded into my pc outside the network via Teamviewer which in turn allows me access to my network and the server I did try a vm as well, it worked but the latency was horrible Teamviewer is much better in my case I still would like to passthrough hardware in my unRAID box to have a better vm experience but I fail ever time, one of these days I'll get it working I'm terrible at the command line and linux

Maybe this has been answered.

It would be easier to just setup an openvpn server docker to your unraid box. Less resources and free as opposed to installing teamviewer which can sometimes fail to connect.

Yeah for some reason I couldn't get it to work from my unRAID box but since I have a pi on network I run openVPN on it now and works like a charm and it was as simple as one line in the command terminal to get it up and running not sure why I always fail with my unRAID box I've followed many tutorials on the subject

Install the wireguard plugin on the unraid box and forward the port from your router to unraid. 

 

That's what I do to gain access to my unraid system out of the house. 

 

I also have a vpn on my router for backup if my unraid system crashes or needs to be rebooted.

 

Just a word of warning on nextcloud, once your files are in it, you can only access them from within the nextcloud system. i.e. you can't have a smb share with your files and have them available in nextcloud.

Forget OpenVPN. Wireguard is officially included in latest unRAID and performance-wise is much better than OpenVPN. There are tutorials on LimeTech/unRAID forums on how to set it up.
