You can either be sensible and name it something like "The Vault" if its long term storage

Or you can name it ServerMcServerface. And I would choose the latter.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Wall Of Fame (Informative people/People I like): @Glenwing @DrMacintosh @Schnoz @TempestCatto @LogicalDrm @Dan Castellaneta

Going by a previous thread, you have an Apple laptop right? So you could name the server "cheese"... then you'll have mac and cheese!

Sorry I had to ?

There's no place like ~

All the computers on my network I have named after planetary objects because I’m weird lol.

Quote me or @TwilightRavens if you want me to see your reply. I may go inactive for a long time from time to time because I forget how to socialize, but I will be back... eventually.

When you have over 1000 of them you need proper names, nick names just don't cut it.

Aye, but in a small group you can theme them, like Yggdrasil for the main data cluster.

You could call it Leather or Tanner...after all, a renderer is usually connected to the leather-curing business.

I just don't see the point, it's a render server so render[num]. Job done ?. What's the file server called again? Oh right File[num]. What's the name of the ESX server?..... ESX[num] ?.

Not only is it very simple to remember you can also know what it does, mostly, purely based on the name.

It's subjective after all...and if it was a remotely professional/corporate environment I'd deploy like RNA01U12...something like server type, row/cabinet number/first U of rack where the server chassis resides.

Sometimes you want it obfuscated, sometimes you want a naming system, sometimes you want it simple, and sometimes you want to have fun.

Well that depends, that's exactly how we name them. VMs float so physical based naming other than prefex of DC it lives in doesn't reflect reality and when you have over 100 ESX hosts naming on location has more problems than anything else. Asset management system that tracks where things are works better, everything is based off the asset number for physical information and server names are used for the network itself.

Everyone does it slightly different but generically similar, I've got much better things to do than think up names of things even at home. It's not so much that I care what others name them but I see no value, point nor enjoyment out of it so I just suggest what I would do hence akl-render1 ?. Boring sure, but it's exactly what I would actually do lol.

I'll agree with you, while at the same time mentioning my phone's name is MCP (à la Tron).

name it 127.0.0.1

but seriously, why does it need a clever/witty name?

maybe im jaded by managing about 20k+ virtual machines across 15 environments....for a medium sized environment or larger the most useful name is something like [Location][App][Environment][Number] So like.....AK-EXC-P01 (Auckland Exchange Production 01)

At home I just use functional names as well for anything thats infrastructure. The most creative it gets is like "Jarsky-PC" for my PC because it doesnt matter at all what the hostname is for end devices.

For fun?
