Trying to decide on a new laptop ASUS Zephyrus GX501

Planning to get this one. I like that's it's thin and all, however...

 

I read the reviews and apparently the six core inside gets to 95-100 in gaming and needs to be downvolted. Max-Q 1080 is essentially a laptop 1070 (max Q 1080 will be like 5%-10% faster but that's not much)

 

NVMe in RAID 0 I believe etc.

 

Cost £1575 (buying from someone I know).

 

Is this thing even worth it / should I wait for him to have some 2060 laptops after they come out?

Well you're right, it does overheat but if you get it from HIDevolution and choose their thermal upgrades, it will help mitigate the heat issues.

In the configurator, choose:

Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on CPU + GPU, and Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pads on heat sensitive surfaces – BEST PERFORMANCE

 

The price might be slightly higher but in return, you will get a properly tested laptop as they do stress test the machines with synthetic benchmarks and actual gaming sessions tto ensure it works 100% out of the box.

 

In addition, ASUS' customer service is not the greatest but at least this way you have their own tech support which is way better than any OEM's tech support/customer service in my experience and they give you a lifetime tech support as well.

 

If you email donald@hidevolution.com telling him about the model that you're interested in, he might be able to give you a small discount to help offset the price difference.

This model has CPU cooling issue (even for 7th gen i7-7700HQ) and GPU overheating/throttling on 1080MQ variant. And it's not exactly in light weight category TBH

 

Might want to wait for laptops with 2060 and with around the same weight. The choice is yours.

I bought it and returned it. Camera has stuttering issues in both sound and visuals, right speaker didn't work properly, and when I plug in my mouse the screen gives me sound feedback?! like "Bzzzz" every time I move the mouse. Using touchpad = no feedback. It's just horrendous laptop.
