To ignore or to not ignore? 

 

Someone in my household downloaded a torrent after I told them not to, leading to an email from the ISP (Spectrum/Charter Communications).

 

Prevent it from happening again and not worry about it?

 

I don't like the fact that they knew exactly what file was downloaded. Would they send a notice like that if you were using a VPN and the only thing they could see is the high bandwidth?

Totally ignore. To comment can indicate you knew what was going on.

They go by all manner of things to track these downloads. The file can be boobytrapped, they can watch the file being downloaded to an IP address (yours) and go from there,

The most they would see with a VPN would be high bandwidth going to or from your VPN provider.

VPN with dns leak protection would prevent them from seeing anything. You have to trust your VPN provider and it's server locations though. Ignore the letter and if you don't know who is causing it block p2p on your network

Had this problem with a roomie a number of years back, leading to temporary throttling of our connection to 1mbit/s.

 

We changed WiFi passwords and disabled their ethernet jack.  Problem solved.

Are there any you would recommend? I've only ever tried free ones. Would I need an account for each computer / device or just one subscription? Does it sacrifice download speeds? Can I set it up on my modem/router for all traffic?

 

I know almost everything is monitored, but I never really worried about it until they sent me an email with the exact file downloaded, date, IP address, etc.. Whether I'm doing illegal activity or not, that's not cool.

I'm not, it's in my girls name so I just rather stay on the safe side. I've gotten a couple from Time Warner when I lived in my Dads house and they never did anything.

Its our kids so I'm just going to enable some protections.

 

Problem is, it's a monopoly where I live so if I get throttled or suspended I'm fucked.

Yea, it's dumb. I get protecting copyright and what not, though. I wish companies would realize that torrents/"illegal downloads" isn't necessarily a bad thing . There's a number of things I would have never paid for if I hadn't been able to try it first. I learned Photoshop and Dreamweaver on my own in high school and now do web design using legit Adobe products.

If you ever look at your torrenting client you can see everyone's IP that you are seeding from or seeding to.  If you go with a VPN then make certain you configure your torrent client accordingly because it may not be going through your VPN and will continue to use your real IP.  

 

If you really want to torrent (not that you do) then I would encourage getting a seedbox.  It is a hosted server that you use to download the torrents with and to and then you just use FTP (SFTP is preferred) to grab the files from your seedbox to put on your local machine.  Or some seedboxes can be used to host Plex servers and you can stream from your seedbox.

Yea, I think it might be what was downloaded  like mentioned above. It's the second time about the same file, but I also think it's the only thing downloaded that way. I actually just torrented 100gb file so we will see :)

NEVER use a free VPN. If you go on r/VPNTorrent there are some good ones. But simply searching online for best torrenting VPN gives some. Stay away from any owned in the US or 14 eyes countries. Usually you get one sign in and you download the client software. You sign in and depending on who your provider is they will allow a select number of concurrent users. Speeds are typically slowed but a nice VPN will usually have within 10-5% of your rated speeds. I get 10Mb/s and download at 2.0Mb/s-1.9Mb/s. Of course they can see everything you do on the internet. Every single thing. Everything. MPAA and DMCA have active teams that track their movies and everyone's IP is shown while downloading so if you don't have a VPN they simply look up your IP go to the ISP tell them what you are doing and you get a letter.

that's true, but to be honest there's things i would never pay for even if i tried it, for example my music production programs would cost me 10,000$+ if i paid for everything, the fuck, i'm not gonna pay for that shit.

 

but as for other "reasonably priced" programs, yeah i agree, especially for games since i wanna try the game first, see if it works well or if i like it, but some games are completely different than what they're advertised and they're not worth my money, back in the day everything had a Demo, that's how they increased sales.

If you really want to torrent (not that you do) then I would encourage getting a seedbox.  It is a hosted server that you use to download the torrents with and to and then you just use FTP (SFTP is preferred) to grab the files from your seedbox to put on your local machine.  Or some seedboxes can be used to host Plex servers and you can stream from your seedbox.

Then seedbox is the way to go.  It can be faster alternative also.

Those notices come from the Copy Right holder, not Charter. Charter just passes it along to you. The fact is, if your using a VPN is doubtful they would be able to track you. Pretty much all the major pirates are going VPN. So I would just ignore the letter. Now if you get a letter from the court or a lawyer then that would be a different matter all together. Most of the time however the copy right holder just warns you. They tend to go after the people actually sharing the material than the ones who download it. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

That's not bad, do you use them? You think that's better than just using a VPN? I don't really want to pay for two different services if it's not needed. Do you use a VPN in combination with that or no?
