Is this old Mac pro worth buying

It's going pretty cheap just wondering how would it still work

That's a 2006 model. The only reason it runs OS X 10.11 is because someone upgraded it and hacked the OS to run. Value is roughly $150.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

Well, I guess is alright for just browsing and some productivity softwares but nothing crazy.
That DDR2 Ram will be a pain in the ass nowadays. The only decent thing is the GTX 650 but still it's old and not competent GPU for current gaming scene.
I guess you're paying 290euros for the Apple logo from 2007, which is ridicilious still I guess it should be no more than 150-200

Edit: Also, dunno what's the PSU in there, wont' be surprised if it blows right in front of you

I've had one of these rigs, although not with OSX on it.

They are......modest...these days for anything more hardcore than browsing the web and non-FPS games. I wouldn't take another for more than ~50$ simply because you'll never get it better than it is now and you'll never get your money back out of it, regardless of what you add to it.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

That's a dual core CPU with DDR2 memory. It is old. Depends on what you would use it for. I'd guess it would be slow AF for any workload you strain it with.

Edit: I wouldn't waste money on this. It isn't worth it.

No. If it's the 2006 Mac Pro with 3.0GHz Xeons then it's 2 quad cores for a total of 8c/8t. The 2.4Ghz ones like I had are two dual cores, for a total of 4c/4t.

As for it not being worth it... if you're a collector and it's in amazing condition then it is. If you aren't then you can get something much better, that Mac Pro can't run newer Mac OS X versions without an EFI hack (which is why it's running El Capitan in the first place) and it definitely can't run the latest versions. They are decently snappy doing normal desktop stuff but I don't think such a big power hungry computer is a good option for a web browsing/multitasking machine.

EDIT: actually weird, those are 2c Xeons after all, but you still have two so it's a total of 4c/4t.

at that price shouldn't be too hard to find a newer one on eBay or your prefered public marketplace site.

I wouldn't pay more than 140 or 150 USD, strip and sell the parts out, keep the case and dualboot system then upgrade to modern hardware. I've always adored these Mac Pro cases.

  • 5 weeks later...

If you can find one of the ones with the dual Quad cores they still work pretty well... I have one with the 2.66ghz quad cores. Its practical speed in rendering etc is about on par with a fx8350...  (cinebenched mine vs my old desktop)

If the price is right and u don't mind being on a dead and mac os it still works great for now. I use mine because I find Final Cut Pro to be the most intuitive editing software and because it  works well as a good NAS for all my media collecting.

(I paid $157 for mine back in 2016 and it came with the 4870 32gb of ram and the OS was on an SSD) So keep the price down :P

Just make sure the price is right and make sure you use the sleep features these things are power hogs while on.
