Ford's New Electric Truck!

According to CNN, Ford is poised to release a hybrid AND all-electric version to their ever-popular F-150 truck lineup. It is unclear what the cost will be, as well as the individual specs. According to CNN, "Ford had previously announced it would make a hybrid version of the F-150. The all-electric truck would be in addition to that." In addition to these new vehicles, Ford also plans to add electric options for their transit vans, according to reports. What do you guys think? I feel like the instant torque of electric could be nice, but in practical use may prove to be more challenging. Also, I feel like Ford's truck demographic may not be as excited about electric vehicles as some other markets.

The hybrid variant sounds a lot more interesting, providing high torque right away then using gas to keep it going long distances, plus being able to charge the electric motor away from a plug. Plus Ford says with its electric power train, you'll be able to plug in power tools to be able to use as well. But I guess we'll have to wait a few years to see what actually becomes reality.

The other benefit would be the ability to use the battery to power tools and equipment through 240v plugs above and beyond what a standard ICE with alternator would be able to.

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

LOL - well by that time I'm hopeful that the new lithium batteries that are supposed to come out will be here, they supposedly aren't susceptible to explode and catch fire like the current tech.

Unlikely. And even if they themselves didn't explode, the high voltage is still a dramatic energy/fire source for other things in the car to explode and/or start on fire.

IIRC, the gel that they were saying would be used in the batteries would be fire retardant... but I could be mis-remembering it I guess?

Yes.  

 

Back when I worked residential construction, there were Fords (F-150, 250s, 350s,etc.) all over the job site and not one of those people would be caught dead with an EV (my employer used Dodge trucks, not that Dodge owners would be much different).  Although it seems like most F-150 owners don't actually use them for work anyway (if what I see during my commute is any indication). 

 

However, if the EV version were branded as the new Lightning and was made relatively fast, it could sell quite well.

Or if they were usable as on-site generators... Having worked construction myself, I think there is a decent sub-portion that would love a hybrid for that purpose.

 

Pure EV though would be a non-starter.

I work in the Titanium industry and Tesla was having issues when getting in accidents with trucks having a rear ball (they rear end a truck) and the ball would puncture the battery box and Kablooey.

Curious. I have an '08 F150 Screw that has almost 60k miles on it and has never been in the shop. I had two Rangers that never needed any repairs. I bought a used '71 LTD wagon that gave me excellent service for the time I had it. My Daddy's '66 F100 went well over 100k miles without any major repairs. His '62 Galaxy went over 120k without any major repairs. I don't recall seeing any F150s on the side of the road (and I have done a lot of traveling).

 

So, what's your issue with F150s?

Considering that the F-150 has been the number one selling vehicle in North America for ages, this is a no-brainer move by Ford.

 

Sure there'll be gear heads that hold out - but most people? Once they try an electric and understand how it can meet their needs? People will be quick enough to adopt, assuming the price isn't a barrier.

 

Ultimately we need an Electric version that costs the exact same as the Gasoline version (with comparable Trim level).

 

So if I'm shopping for a Honda Civic, for example, ideally I could buy an EV version for the same price as the gasoline version.
