$5k budget build

Mr Ozzz

Ok hey guys

so never built a pc but can handle putting this all together hopefully. I’m starting with with just a basic old laptop that is just used for surfing.

want to get into 4K video editing and hi res photos. I’m not really a gamer but if the system is capable then maybe I may indulge but have no idea yet what games I would play

i have a $5k budget which would hopefully include the complete build and 1 or possibly 2 monitors that would be 4K or whatever is needed, keyboard and mouse plus windows install

i have a little give with the budget so if it goes over I can work with it

i appreciate any help that you send my way

thank in advance

1. Budget & Location

$5000 to $6000

California

2. Aim

4K video editing high res photo editing / not a gamer but if the system allows possibly may play but really not sure on games

3. Monitors

4K or lower hopefully can will be able to  fit 2 monitors in the budget

4. Peripherals

Keyboard,mice, and  windows install

5. Why are you upgrading?

I have an old laptop and want a desktop with high end components and be as fast as the budget allows

what programs do you edit in and use?

How much storage do you need? Do you have a nas or external storage already?

Well don’t have any programs yet but it will be Adobe Premiere Pro CC

not really sure on how much storage I’ll need but want it to be as fast as possible. No external storage or nas.

$5k is a heavy budget.

Going heavy on storage with a 1TB NVME M.2 drive, 2TB of SSD storage for fast RAID 0 storage, and 16TB cumulative of extended hard drive storage. If it was me this is what I would build the system as:

Thanks for the build info so don’t think I’ll opt for that much storage 3 tb in ssd would be a good start and maybe later add more.

any reason not to water cool ?

Would it be worth pushing ram to 64GB?

may go a bit saucy with RGB in and out  any options for adding that as a different build

Any need for 10bit color? I doubt you need the premium of the 2080ti, the 2080 will be probably sufficient depending on how much vram your projects need.

Pudget hardware recommendations for Premiere

Depending on the upcoming reviews the Radeon VII with its 16 gb of hbm2 memory might be a great value for 699 $

In that case, just avoid the hard drives for the time being. Water cooling isn't any better than large air coolers, plus they are quieter and you don't run the risk of a pump failure. Overall system temps will be lower with a large air cooler.

I would just get the 2x16GB kit for now, you can get another 32GB of the same kit if you need more RAM.

If you want more RGB I suggest this:

You can swap the fans on the cooler for the RGB ones. Admittedly modeled after my workstation PC but between the Cryorig R1 cooler, Corsair LL fans, and Meshify C case these are great components, some of the best I have ever used over the years of building computers. The 9900k is essentially a Ryzen 7 2700x on steroids so it is a workhorse monster. The alternative is a Threadripper build, however, the cores gained won't make to much of a difference in Adobe, especially since the 9900k can OC to 5.0GHz, also if you intend to game the 9900k is the best CPU on the market to do so. You may want to wait for the new Ryzen 7 3000 series CPU's to launch, but other than giving up upgrade paths you won't lose much by getting the 9900k.

Better off going with a Gigabyte or MSI board etc. Much better VRM's than Asus on Z390.

thanks for the input

lee32uk can you explain in laymans terms not sure what you mean as this is my first build

with the cooler that was recommended will if fit inside with no issues due to height ?

any other options for graphics card was looking at reviews on amazon a lot of issues and for $1300 don't want to risk it ?

and any other options you can recommend for 4k monitors they were 399 but just checked and there 499 now ?

i will probably opt to get 64 gb of ram and put them in from the beginning so i would just duplicate the same ram and there is enough slots ?

again thank for your help

thanks for the input

lee32uk can you explain in laymans terms not sure what you mean as this is my first build

with the cooler that was recommended will if fit inside with no issues due to height ?

any other options for graphics card was looking at reviews on amazon a lot of issues and for $1300 don't want to risk it ?

and any other options you can recommend for 4k monitors they were 399 but just checked and there 499 now ?

i will probably opt to get 64 gb of ram and put them in from the beginning so i would just duplicate the same ram and there is enough slots ?

again thank for your help

A lot of the Asus Z390 boards are lacking in the VRM department. The link below explains the VRM better than I can.

That particular Asus board is fine, but you don't really need to be spending over $400 on one when you can get a solid option for less. The Formula is geared more towards high end users/overclocking etc. If you are building a workstation then you probably won't need most of the features.

Maybe check out a board like the Gigabyte Z390 Designare as it is aimed at content creators.

The cooler size will depend on what case you go with. Assuming you want a quiet pc then maybe check out BeQuiet or Fractal R5/R6 cases etc. The majority of cases will state the maximum cpu cooler height, but pcpartpicker is usually pretty good with compatibility. I would look at the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 or Noctua D15 as they are both high end and will run quiet. Just go with low profile ram such as Corsair LPX to avoid any clearance issues.

Not sure how much gpu power you will need, but that link posted above by Manderis is useful to read. Some of the Gigabyte gpu's have 4 year warranties when you register them. The Gaming OC off the top of my head is one. You also have EVGA who do 3 years and they have good customer service as well.

For the monitors you are best looking at reviews.

You have 4 ram slots on Z390 so for 64GB just get 2x (2 x 16GB). Something like the Corsair LPX below as it will fit under any air cooler.
