Laptop temperatures. What is safe and what isn't?

TheNaitsyrk

Kind of new to the laptop game.

Bought GTX 1070 laptop with 6820HK OC-able chip.

Without OC running at 120Hz ultra, GPU and CPU occasionally both hit 85C. Although it does fluctuate. < Fluctuate between 80-85 usually and CPU about 75-85. Fans at full speed.

When I OC both, GPU gets to like 87C or 90C and CPU gets to over 90C (90-93C I believe).

Is that dangerous in any way shape or form?

The laptop is used, but it is in immaculate condition and I only paid £1050 whereas brand new 8750H + 1060 laptops cost £1350 (my co-worker bought one).

I have some Thermal Grizzly lying around, should I repaste? I don't want to use liquid metal for ... Obvious reasons.

SSD was literally running for 28 days and yeah, that's it and HDD for 157 days and that's it so this laptop seen very little usage. Kind of wanna keep it since it's pretty rad laptop, but temperatures worry me.

IT IS UNDER WARRANTY THOUGH, 2 years. But not sure if overheating is covered.

What do you guys think?

Oh yea, if I lock the screen at 60Hz, GPU doesn't go past 57C. (1080p 120Hz G-Sync 15.6 screen) (Fans spin at 5600 at full speed, so it's pretty much a helicopter but it doesn't bother me that much)

Since it's a laptop, I think those are perfectly fine temps. They are made to run under hot temperatures anyway. My old laptop used to hit 95C and throttle on both CPU and GPU.

Unless you game all day long, those temps are fine. Almost all laptops throttle to some degree (pardon the pun).

Pointless to stress it on a laptop.

I was playing The Division at 1080p ultra with 120Hz enabled for like 30 minutes, with fans cranked to max. Left it at populated area in the main city and temps got there.

However, temps go down drastically when I set it to 60Hz (clocks go down, and temps too) so I might play at 60hz sometimes, depending on the game I guess.

Now while those temps are not dangerous, I consider best practice to try to keep temps under 70C, even if that means cranking the fan as the higher the temps, the more you have to worry about thermal fatigue (AKA parts expanding and contracting at different rates as parts heat up and cool, often leading to solder failure, and is a common cause of death in computers).

I was playing The Division at 1080p ultra with 120Hz enabled for like 30 minutes, with fans cranked to max. Left it at populated area in the main city and temps got there.

Then that CPU temp is pretty high tbh. I recommend you remove the OC from the CPU, and see how much the temps change.

CPU was not OCed, it reached 85C on it's own in a game when left all cranked up (120Hz ultra) so there's no bottleneck due to 60hz. It goes over 90C when OCed to 4.0Ghz. (although that is not necessary yet to be fair). GPU doesn't seem to care when OCed or not.

Laptop is Aorus X5 V6 btw.

Got 2 years warranty and I can still return it within the next two weeks for full refund, but for £1050 that price was great (for the specs), when 1060 laptops go for £1300 and RTX 2060 ones with similar performance will go for £1500.

I could return it for full refund in theory and just get a different one once I get another £500 or something.
