Laptop getting hot

85c is fine for a laptop, they're built with much less airflow and cooling than a desktop.

 

It's a fine temp to game at, when doing specific tasks.  Don't reapply thermal paste to a laptop, unless it's obvious that something is wrong.  Nothing is wrong, your machine is running as it was built to run.  A high performance laptop runs hot, it's how things work.

 

 

 

 

Hi all,

 

My laptop (an Asus ROG GL503VM-GZ260T with a GTX 1060 and I7 7700HQ) reaches quite high temperatures (I think):

42-50 degrees Celsius on CPU and GPU while just browsing Chrome.

47-55 degrees Celsius on CPU and 49-57 degrees Celsius on the GPU while browsing Chrome and using Discord to voice chat.

And while gaming the CPU reaches from 77 (in the first 10 minutes) to 89 degrees Celsius on the CPU (after 45 minutes to an hour the CPU will consistently be above 85 degrees Celsius) and 78-87 degrees Celsius on the GPU (which has the same story as the CPU while gaming). I get these temperatures while playing Assassin's Creed: Odyssey (1080p High), Watch_Dogs 2 (1080p mix of medium, high and ultra(, and Forza Horizon 4  (1080p medium)(I haven't really tested it with other games yet).

Are these temperatures normal for a laptop (bear in mind my laptop is around 1.5 cm thin)? If not, what can I do to reduce the temperatures? (I've already done an undervolt on the CPU of -0.100 V, but haven't done so yet on my GPU as I don't really know how to do that).

This is pretty normal for a laptop.

Probably not unless you run it really hot all the time. I'm not an expert on laptops, I just know that they get hotter and don't perform as well. You should look into it.

But that's the problem; some people say this is bad for a laptop, while others say it isn't.....

A CPU being above 85 is not where I'd want it, you should look into both undervolting and reapplying better thermal paste.

An additional concern to heating is also the changing size of your components due to heat. If things are expanding and contracting on your motherboard due to a wide range of heat changing, it will wear out faster.

Ah thanks for explaining the last part.

But I've watched a few videos about repasting, and it didn't make a lot of difference on this particular model (and I'm not actually confident enough to reapply thermal paste...).

The undervolt didn't make a huge difference, and my GPU is hotter than my CPU most of the time, so I guess I'd need to undervolt the GPU in order to reduce overall temperatures (as the CPU and GPU have a shared heatsink), right? But how exactly do you undervolt a GPU?

You can download MSI afterburner and manually lower the clock speed.

Yes, but how do I know if I do it correctly? Because I have no idea how I should adjust the sliders (like to which point), and the guides I've watched just said to slide the sliders, without really giving any context......

You don't need to do anything.

 

Leave it alone, enjoy the laptop as it is.  It's not going to burst into flames, melt, or die in 4 days.

 

Stop buying into the hype and fear.

Well since you're reducing performance, which is within expected parameters, you can just drop the frequency slider all the way down.

Honestly those temperatures are great especially given the model. If you are not bouncing off the limit at 99 be happy.

The cooling solution is crap. You can try repaste (good thermal pastes)

Most laptops have crappy stock paste, and with 8th gen mobile CPUs (I know it's a different story), repaste is more essential since they run hot

Since Pascal is voltage locked you either have to lower frequency or power target.
