Adobe Premiere Upgrade Help

Ok so bear with me for a minute because I like to type it ALL out so its easier for you all to help me without having to ask the basics.

1. Budget & Location

$1500~ USD but can go up if needed.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

2. Aim

Currently I only do 1080 video, but alot of it. I currently do not do 4k/8k video editing, but will in the future. I cover drag racing and do full feature event features, DVD's and BluRays. The editing isn't extravagant with crazy special effects and color grading/correction etc, BUT there is ALOT of fast paced editing. So I am just trying to speed up the workflow in Adobe Premiere Pro and Encore, which on my end has become alot faster since I started in 2010. So currently my computer is my hold up on waiting for things like renders, file transfer etc. plus alot of dropped frames and just all around lagging when I am trying to rush thru the editing progress. So with recommendations from alot of others with this new build I was wanting to do a 3 SSD setup with 2 of my current drives for local storage. I also have my 48tb QNAP which i move older stuff to and backup to regularly, but wanted to still keep some stuff locally incase its needed from previous events and edits.

I was going to break down the SSD/HDD setup like this -
m.2 1 - OS and Software (970 Pro)
m.2 2 - Project files and source media (970 Evo)
m.2 3 - Media Cache & Scratch files (970 Evo)
HDD 1 + 2 - Storage for everything else

I dont game, or OC at all, but do ALOT of video all day everyday. Im sure at this point anything I put together will be faster than my current setup. I also currently use Adobe Master Collection 5.5 and will be upgrading to Adobe CC with this new build.

3. Monitors

Currently have 1 Samsung and 2 Acer's. Only 1 of the Acers is hooked up.

I have 2 more of the same Samsung's in the box, just haven't hooked them up yet since I am redoing the office desk area along with this build.

4. Peripherals

Reusing my current keyboard, mouse, speakers etc.

5. Why are you upgrading?

Basically the computer I have I built as my first computer when I started really getting into the racing videos. I built it in March of 2010. I think since im coming up on 9 years of duty with this thing its about time. I have gotten faster at what I do, and the computer now slows me down. I have upgraded parts in it over the years, new SSD, newer HDD, newer GPU, more ram . I just feel its time to revamp most of it.

Attached below is the original build from 2010, and the current Speccy list of what I am typing on with some changes.

I plan on reusing the -

HAF 932 case

GTX 1050 Ti

DVD Drive

I purchased the GPU not too long ago so it will do for now. Im not planning on waiting another 9 years for upgrades, so the GPU can be upgraded in the next few months once the initial build is done. My racing season starts shortly and I need to get a jump on the main parts first.

This is the PCPP list I currently have put together. The two WD HDD I added on there to layout the list, but I currently have them already installed in the current system.

Hope this was all enough info to help with my questions.

Question, 4K and 8K RAW? Because if so you are going to need a lot more money.

you're overspending on drives. the hard drives you picked are only 2tb and are over 200$.

think you're mistakenly assuming drive speed will be the be all end all of your final render speed or editing performance

a single ssd and a 10tb hdd could be had for less

and jeez you're overspending on the motherboard too , lotta fixes needed here

May have missed where I said the WDD HDD on the pcpp list were only there because I already have them and they will be in this build. They are currently in my computer I have now. They are being reused. No extra money being spent on those.

I chose that mobo due to having 3 m.2 slots. Didnt find any others that would work? One reason I made this post, incase I overlooked something on that end.

and you're under the impression that 1080 video editing would somehow be faster if you used 3 m2 drives

alrighty then whatever floats your boat

Well if you would like to give some constructive criticism on why it wouldn't be then I'm all ears. If all your going to do is try and belittle my post ASKING FOR HELP without actually giving any input on it, then I guess Thanks?

In that budget I also would suggest not going full out on NVMe ssd storage.

1 NVMe 970 EVO for OS would be enough and if you want different drives for media storage/export sata ssds should be enough. You could choose if you want 500 gb or 1 TB at that point. But if you go large storage on a server anyway maybe save the 100$ and put it in a i9 9900k. As I understand the i9 is currently king in Adobe.

But you would probably need something else as the 212 evo to keep the Temps within reason.

(okay comment is getting long. just wanna check: which in your PCPP list would you be using for installing windows on?)

The Samsung 970 Pro

well you got more options here if you need a few: https://www.anandtech.com/show/13407/intel-z390-motherboard-overview-every-motherboard-analyzed/57

(sanity check on the types of m.2 SSDs the sockets support before committing to any one of them)

  • ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming 9
  • ASRock Z390 Taichi
  • ASRock Z390 Taichi Ultimate
  • ASUS ROG Maximus XI Extreme
  • ASUS ROG Maximus XI Gene
  • ASUS WS Z390 Pro
  • GIGABYTE Z390 Aorus Ultra
  • GIGABYTE Z390 Aorus Master
  • GIGABYTE Z390 Aorus Xtreme
  • MSI MEG Z390 ACE
  • MSI MEG Z390 GODLIKE

That link is where I found the info on the number of m.2 available on the mobo's. I chose the ASRock Z390 Taichi based on that link.

This is what that board supports -

- 6 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s Connectors, support RAID (RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10, Intel® Rapid Storage Technology 16), NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug*
- 2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s Connectors by ASMedia ASM1061, support NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug
- 1 x Ultra M.2 Socket (M2_1), support M Key type 2230/2242/2260/2280 M.2 SATA3 6.0 Gb/s module and M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen3 x4 (32 Gb/s)**
- 2 x Ultra M.2 Sockets (M2_2 and M2_3), support M Key type 2230/2242/2260/2280/22110 M.2 SATA3 6.0 Gb/s module and M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen3 x4 (32 Gb/s)**

*M2_1, SATA3_0 and SATA3_1 share lanes. If either one of them is in use, the others will be disabled.
If M2_2 is occupied by a SATA-type M.2 device, SATA3_3 will be disabled.
M2_3, SATA3_4 and SATA3_5 share lanes. If either one of them is in use, the others will be disabled.

**Supports Intel® Optane™ Technology
Supports NVMe SSD as boot disks
Supports ASRock U.2 Kit

  • renders
    • CPU: Media Encoder responds better to faster clocks first, but more cores/threads would make up for the lack of speed
      • if you're able to choose between the two with similar render times, get the faster CPU because editing on Premiere prefers clocks as well
      • also look into using Quicksync in intel CPUs with iGPUs to export H264/H265 videos (beware of recent intel core-KF CPUs without iGPUs)
  • file transfer
    • SSD. SATA would do fine, so long as the scratch file and export target is not to the same physical disk as the OS drive.
      • once you start going to 4K you might want to look into NVMe/PCIe (which you already are, so you should be fine here)
  • alot of dropped frames
    • CPU and disk access speed. Your build-in-planning already addressed storage; also see CPU notes above
    • depending on your plugins or filters, you might need a better GPU.
the 1050ti you have right now should do fine for most simple projects under 12 minutes (is that right? in your speccy screenshot)
      • 4K footage may benefit from more VRAM (otherwise it'll page video memory to system memory). if there're parts you want to delay acquiring untill you start on 4K, you can do so for the GPU
    • also depending on the system memory footprint of your largest/most complex project you'd need more RAM, although you've already addressed that with the 32GB you're planning
  • all around lagging
    • if your projects have a lot of nested sequences, you'd need to check on your scratch disk performance (see dropped frames (but as mentioned you've already addressed them with those 3 NVMe sticks))
    • otherwise if it's lagging even for simple projects, better CPU first (
    • Also keep notes on the amount of system RAM you're using in any point of time. Premiere do most of its work on RAM and scratch disks, but if there's another program with a large system RAM footprint you'd need to check that as well

sorry that I can't give you direct part recommendations (outside of Amazon or Newegg) because I'm not familiar with the nuances of pricing and shipping in your area, so I can only give you some idea of the hardware stressors in Premiere (for you to be able to decide which part to down/up-tier on your own)

definitely start with one stick of NVMe m.2 SSD though o_o if you're planning to RAID0 three of them, you might not max out on the practical performance because of the implementation on Z390 motherboards (well, most lower-than-HEDT systems in general)(also I don't think some motherboards are able to RAID NVMe SSSs...? check manuals before buying). pick the 970 Pro first.

(speaking of which, DAMMIT amazon emptied out the 970 Pro ,_,)

Thank you for the lengthy response with the breakdown.

Ill look into the Quicksync.

The GPU WILL be upgraded a month or two after this initial build comes together 110%. Just not doing it right this second.

I wasnt planning on doing a RAID setup with the NVMe m.2 SSD's.

Thank you for the info. Gonna do some more research on how exactly I want to tackle this SSD/HDD situation. Ill rebump this thread when I get there.

  • 1 month later...

UPDATE - 2/22/19

Ok so revisiting this thread since my race season has started and im behind on this build. Changed a few things on the parts list based on some input here and on some other forums.

Going with the i9-9900k instead of the i7-8700k.

Still have the CM Hyper 212 cooler on the list but may change to an AIO if needed.

Same MoBo

Changed Ram speed

Drive setup I still want to keep somewhat the same for personal workflow reasons. Just got rid of one of the M.2 drives

970 Evo - OS/Programs

970 Evo - Project FIles and Source Media

860 Evo - Media Cashe & Scratch Files

HDD 1+2 - Storage for everything else (WD Black 2tb each, These are in the current computer now)

Power Supply is the same.

And I was going to wait to upgrade the GPU, but in the last few weeks Ive been having issues with it not booting right, so time has come to upgrade that as well. I chose the one on the list by recommendations, but am not 100% glued to it. Dont want to blow money on a crazy top tier GPU that is overkill, but also dont want a subpar one ill be pissed off at in a months time. Ive edited on this GTX 1050ti for going on 5 years now and its been good.

I value the constructive criticism of the members on this forum so any help is appreciated. Hoping to start ordering some of the parts this coming Monday.

I guess really, after this whole thread, the only thing left is help deciding on a GPU.

Well a 1070ti is a bit overpriced, especially if you don't game. How is your VRAM need?

Yeah I dont game at all what so ever. And to be totally honest, I have no idea on the VRAM need. I will however be using 3 Samsung LU28E590DS/ZA monitors which I have here once I finish the new office desk setup with this build. Not sure if that changes anything on the GPU pickings. I ran 3 smaller monitors off the current GPU with no hiccups for two years also.
