Fans pinned at 100% after cpu upgrade

CreativeUsernam

I recently upgraded a cpu & cooler in an old desktop.

After putting the new cooler on, and the new cpu in, the fans are pegged at 100% all the time, despite reported temps in windows being ~30-40 degrees. Why is this, and how can I fix it?

So far I’ve tried reapplying thermal paste and resetting the bios by pulling the cmos battery. I've also tried lowering the fans manually with SpeedFan, but my fan controller isn't detected, and there are no fan settings in the bios. The new cpu is detected correctly and everything works fine except the fans.

  • Machine: Lenovo A1U-9174
  • Old cpu: intel core 2 duo e6550
  • "New" cpu: intel core 2 quad q6700
  • Cooler: coolermaster hyper T4

Any suggestions?

Make sure you're plugged into the CPU fan header.

Both the case fan and the cpu fan are plugged into the same headers they were before, so it should be right.

Theres only one other fan header on the board and its too far away for anything to reach, probably for a front case fan.

Is the header it's plugged into 3 or 4 pin? If it's 4 pin, then it's going to be stuck at 100%.

They're both 4 pin headers and 4 pin fans

Yeah, I'm stumped. Good luck getting your issue resolved, anyway.

as per another suggestion on reddit, I pulled the power cord and the CMOS battery for ~15 minutes, and the same thing is still happening.

Ok, it might be that rpm of old fan was so much higher that mobo still thinks fan isn't running correctly. Do you have any settings available for temps etc.?

Worst case scenario is that you need to use resistor to make fan quieter. Or knob controller.

I cant seem to control the fans within windows, I'm making a linux usb right now to see if it'll work from there.

I've also looked around in the bios, and a separate intelME extension to see if there's anything there, and I didn't see anything.

Yeah I guess that would work if all else fails

EDIT: in linux, when I run pwmconfig it doesn't detect any sensor modules. When I run sensors-detect, the only thing it finds is coretemp.
