Noctua D15 vs ?

Tristerin

Working on overclocking my FX 8350 and the Corsair H100i GTX 240 mm AIO cannot keep up with my 4.7ghz overclock (so I can then push to 5.0ghz next).  I can game, and do everything but temps are high (70c while busy, normal temps while idle due to downclock allowance - my temps preoverclock are amazingly chilly).  Its when I push it to 100% it begins to overheat and cause shutdown. Clocks seem stable, but I cant tell until I work on dissipating this heat so I can truly stress it.

Firstly, I am going to DIY my case to allow push/pull on my AIO. But I just don't see this cutting the mustard.  So Id like to get some thoughts on the Noctua D15 and its ilk (my case can support).  Id like the MOST quiet cooler, with the MOST efficiency at a decent price.  Ive seen some brands like Thermalright (I think that's correct) and others that I will investigate myself as well but Im not really versed on high end CPU air coolers, sans the Noctua's which everyone talks about lol.

If the DIY succeeds than great, but Im just feeling like my old AIO wont be able to keep up - was kind of surprised to see it struggle so bad over the weekend.  Please advise suggestions on air coolers - silence is a premium for me!!!

No, I have a Ryzen 7 also.  I have an i5 3470 which is better also.

So, no :) Learning to overclock.

Cant having old hardware be acceptable?  I mean I can still play BF5 on that rig no problem.

I mean, the noctua fan combines silence and performance with an emphasis on performance, while the bequiet coolers are the opposite. The Dark Rock series and the noctua d15s are the best coolers around, imo. So, if you want performance, go with noctua (the NH-D15 is their best one), but if you want silence, the Dark Rock Pro 4 is be quiets best cooler.  For me, I would choose the bequiet because cooling performance is nearly equal between the two, but the Dark Rock is all black, so it is aesthetically pleasing.

PC: CPU: i5-9600k - CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 - GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB GDDR6 - Motherboard: ASRock - Z370 Extreme4 - RAM: Team - T-Force Delta RGB 16 GB DDR4-3000 - PSU: Corsair - TXM Gold 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply - Case: Thermaltake - Core G21 TG

I could, or I can learn to Overclock on my FX 8350 that if I fry I don't care?

Did I say my issue was Frames or heat?  Because I can play all competitive FPS games on that Rig and stay at above 60fps adjusting settings...weird.  OH and my team will still beat yours with my shitty rig.

An H100i shouldn't have any issues with an 8350, even at a very high overclock. You're not quite to 9590 territory, and there are 240mm AIOs that can handle an FX 9590 (which is just a massively stock overclocked 8350). Have you checked your pump speeds to make sure it's running ok? Checked your fans to make sure they're not dying? When's the last time you replaced thermal paste and cleaned out the case?

The NH-D15, Cryorig R1 Ultimate and Dark Rock Pro 4 (or 3) are all within spitting distance of each other. The DRP3/4 is the quietest, the D15 the strongest cooler, but you're not looking at a huge difference no matter which one you go with. They're all great. Thermalright's Le Grande Macho is right up there as well.

Deepcool has their Assassin 3 coming out soon, which will run a monstrous $100 but looks like it could single-handedly end global warming, so we'll see how that one pans out.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Kryonaut applied Friday night, my temps at stock for 1 hour of Prime95 and Unigine Heaven running at the same time (have screenies to prove if needed lol) are 56c socket temp at mobo, and 41c CPU temp (I had Unigine in the mix because I want my GPU's pumping heat into the case as well for best stress test).  I literally have an amazing setup for cooling.  That's why I am just flabbergasted that it couldn't keep up.

I spin my AIO fans at 70% - anything higher and its a jet plane (and 1 of my fans gets out of balance) - they do spin at a very good clip as supposed to with zero noticeable drop or increase that isn't allowable

My pump is set to Extreme and running 3000 rpm - I only get two choices, Quiet, and Extreme.  I tried Quiet as well to give the liquid longer time to cool down in the radiator and it seemed worse.

My case is cleaned monthly, did my case cleanup last week.  Use a vacuum reduced down to 3 straws and micromanage that dust out the case and fins lol.

That's why I was VERY surprised it wasn't keeping it in check, like as soon as CPU processes start the temps fire right up to 50c+.  If I game its 70c plus.

My only thought was...this is the first version of the Corsair H100i GTX - Ive had it for quite some time...could I be reaching that point where the liquid has left the AIO enough to cause problems through evaporation?

If the pump isn't too noisy for you, you can just replace the fans on the AIO instead. If cost isn't an issue, NF-A12x25's are probably the best you can get.

The DRP4 is great but a downdraft cooler would be better for cooling the motherboard if you want to stick with the FX 8350 platform. What case, ram, and fans are you using?

Where are you shopping / located?

My normal operation of the AIO is Extreme pump (cant tell a difference from Extreme or Quiet with my ear on the pump itself even lol) with fans at 40% - this is extremely low DBa and very tolerable.  At 70% fans its obviously running, but tolerable.

I should try that (replace them) as I know they are going bad.  At 75+ % they go out of balance.  Im on the fence though if I buy some SP fans and it doesn't cure the situation (but cheaper than a new high end air cooler).  Lots to think about!

Im only planning on sticking with this platform as long as it provides me with what I want...at this point its now just how long can I get this thing to be viable lol.  For complete setup this is the first rig in my Signature.

It's possible. Unfortunately, the only way to really troubleshoot that is to install a new cooler. You could try taking the cooler off and sloshing it around a bit to see how much liquid is left, I guess? lol sorry, my experience with liquid cooling over a long period of time is limited, as I've always tended to prefer air. Have you considered just replacing the fans?

This is a very valid point. I can confirm that in my Meshify C TG, the NH-C14S with push-pull fans cools better than my H5 Ultimate did in an S340 Elite (changed cases before coolers, unfortunately). I hardly ever run it in push-pull, though, because I have to pull my 3466 RAM and replace with it 2400 low-profile sticks to do so.

The H100i GTX with NF-A12x25's should easily outperform any air cooler outside of downdraft monstrosities like the Scythe Susanoo and be very quiet. Alternatively, you can probably contact Corsair for fan replacements if the cooler is under warranty. If they're just noisy, lower the rpm. The stock SP120L's have a pretty high fan speed at 2435rpm and most fans are far from quiet past 1000rpm.

How's your case airflow set up?

Ill have to check those NF fans out.  I am saving up around $250 on the side as I want to change all my fans to Noctua at some point (my PC is not for looks and this case goes with me build to build) - its not just the noisy - at 40% (1200rpm) they are great, handle stock temps no problem.  I run them at 70% when stress testing which is audible, but Id prefer not that audible.  After 70% they develop a nasty click I cant handle lol.

Oh boy, you've got a HAF. Airflow is definitely not an issue. The clicking makes me think your AIO fans are on their way out, and a set of Noctuas would do you well.

Looks great -- was just making sure if motherboard cooling was a potential issue.

Oh boy, you've got a HAF. Airflow is definitely not an issue. The clicking makes me think your AIO fans are on their way out, and a set of Noctuas would do you well.

Appreciate everyones insight!  I think the best way to go would be those Noctuas first.  Ive read a lot and thought my AIO should keep up no problem.

They don't seem to be particularly cheaper anywhere so Newegg or Amazon are good. If it's cheaper or more convenient locally, go for that.

Newegg and Amazon are usually about the same price on these fans. Some days one's a little cheaper, some days the other.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

You can't really go wrong with noctua products outisde the goofy 24 volters, but if price is an issue you might consider the newer maglev fans from corsair  , The basic ones are offered in a 2 pack for 30-40-ish dollars. They're rated pretty high for static pressure.

EVGA CLC 280. It's whisper quiet from my personal experience and I've got it right next to my monitor with a 5.2 Ghz OC on my 9600k, the CPU stays super chilly at around 40 c or so. It's a 280mm rad and had the coolest Temps tied with corsair in tests last year. The pricing is very competitive and it has RGB.
