Cloning Mess - Clonezilla

So I had to clone a 240GB boot SSD Drive to a brand new 240GB SSD, seemed straightforwards enough didn't it? Used Clonezilla all went fine and driver got cloned fine.

 

Now what makes no sense: Original Boot SSD had about 179GB of free space, cloned only had 150GB of free space, no idea what gives, tried to clone again then original SSD boot went to 150gb of free space while cloned fall to 147GB of free space and they seem to be properly cloned as in all is identical in them.

 

What the hell is going on? why am I losing space out of nowhere, never had this behavior cloning with Clonezilla before.

If I select every thing on SSD there is to select it says it uses about 53GB but on the general properties it says it uses 75GB total:

 

Where is this 23ish GB of data at?

Need specs. The SSD may be using some for overprovisioning. It may be FAT32 - NTFS. It may be different sector sizes etc.

OOHHH. I remember. In some of my clone software, it messes up, and the 100mb Windows recovery (boot etc) partition gets sized at like 10gb or 100gb. So check in Computer Management: Storage. To see if the partitions are the correct size.

 

I have not used Clonzilla, I use EaseUS to clone the partitions.

You could try to extend the partition in DiskManagement.

It may be on unpartitioned space. Or, what is possible too, Clonezilla clone too much and you must use gparted to fix empty space amount. I have that once.

Or try to use MiniTool Partition Wizard to check what is going on.

 

Anyway - use proper Windows tools to made clone, like Macrium Reflect, created for cloning Windows, not for mindless cloning "anything". I used Clonezilla years ago and I don't use this tool anymore, since is not so realiable.

Partition is of correct size, it just claims to be using more space than it really is

Yeah, you have to "align" sector sizes correctly, so they match the chip level, as if not it can waste a lot of "free" space.

go into your Folder Options, and then View tab, and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and check "Show hidden files, folders...."

I can't afford licenses, I need free software that can clone entire disks, I think I tried Macrium once but I was cloning a 1TB HDD (only used about 50GB though) to a 240GB SSD too and it wouldn't allow me to regardless what I did.

Already showing hidden folders, to make matters worse if I go to Pagefile settings it shows the correct available size it should be showing:

the 179GB it should originally do not the 147GB

I don't know how you do that, but I'm using free version and it works perfectly.

Create bootalbe USB (Rescue USB) using Macrium Reflect, boot from USB and clone your system. It will work.

I use the free EaseUS, and free Macrium. Both will do the sector size correction IIRC, just I get bugs with EaseUS where it tries to put the recovery partitions to like 100gb, if upsizing the SSD, on a clone it should be fine.

Make sure "optimise for SSD" is selected. There might be resources in a clonezilla forum/help site for how to set sector sizes. Might be you have 512b or 2k sectors instead of 4k, and so things look like they take up twice the space.

there is also the hibernation file, which could take a stupid amount of storage

Method using GParted - shrink your partition a little, then run chkdisk in Windows and you'll see proper size.

Probably using MiniTool Partition Wizard you can do it too.

Then you can extend your partition.

The thing is, the partition is already on the correct size, Windows is just saying it's using 23ish GB more than it really is and I can't find it any where

Do it what I say or not - it's your choice. What do you expect instead of advices?

Do you try to install MiniTool Partition Wizard?

Do you try to use GParted tool?

If not - we may talk very long, but we'll not resolve any problem.

I'm not talking about read what MiniTool shows. I'm talking about trying to resize partition a little (shrink by 2 MB or whatever) then apply, then run chkdsk.

 

Or if you want to read filesizes and directory sizes - use some good filemanager (like Directory Opus) and calculate folder sizes, then check sizes in subfolders etc. That way you can find what eats your free space. If anything.

Perfect, so to clone the HDD to SSD now, what other cloning software you advise? this is the MiniTool free capable of it? I have to clone a boot HDD with just 50gb used to the older SSD now of 240gb but Clonezilla was acting up because of the size difference

As I said - I recommend Macrium Reflect. But after install - prepare Rescue USB (Reflect has that option), then boot from USB. Is always safer to clone system that is not in use.

 

Or use second computer to clone drive using Macrium Reflect.

 

If you have enough space on third HDD, image your old system, then restore on new drive. You'll have a copy. Just in case.
