Why new member allowed to create a thread?

I don't particularly see any problems with new members.

I for one come here expecting to provide a sort of tech support, and not even get thanks 50%+ of the time.

I guess I can have the pride that I probably have helped a few people in the last 3 years or so, and that's enough for me.

The post is clear..i only ask a question why? not telling people to go to reddit or trying to force LTT to implement the same rules..But more like looking for other solution to address the issue..a better solution..together

IMO users should not be able to post until their profile has their specs listed. Not all blanks filled out, but core components like CPU, Mobo, RAM .. Gpu could be left off as myself and a handful of others use APUs and wouldn't be able to post anymore lol. PSU and case could be left off to .. this would help with the "my computer wont work, help?" posts and the literal next replay is "System Specs?"

Not getting my specs man. NEVER!! Besides, I'll never come here for help (I only troll) because I know how to properly search for answers on my own. Now excuse me while I kick some joe-techies off my lawn.

Well then anything outside the hub (tech news, off topic, general, etc) should require spec list. Troubleshooting for consoles, operating systems, CPUs, etc all find their ways to those subforums, so if you're asking for tech support we gotta know the tech.

True, but how many times do people just throw a troubleshooting question into General?

Yeah but that's only so many. And , a pop up for a first time poster could say "by the way, this subforum is not for tech support"

The forum could very well be a tech support forum. I know it is for many people.

With these kinds of attitude no wonder people think PC builders are elitist. Jeez.

That's not up for you to decide. LMG welcomes tech support questions, as does the community. The forum doesn't want to be like reddit.

 

I stopped watching LTT videos awhile ago because of their shift towards manipulation. I stayed in this community because I enjoy helping people.

I'm new here and obviously my opinion only means so much... But I've heard Linus "advertise" this community many times on the Wan show as a place for people to come for advice and support when they have tech related questions.  He obviously created this community to help people whether they lurk, ask one question and leave, come with intentions of asking one question and leaving but end up coming back because it's a great community or if people come with intentions of being a long term member of the community.  I don't see how any of these kinds of people are bad for the community.  Even the people that come and ask 1 question and never come back might tell a friend who then comes to the community and stays as a long term asset.  For LMG, this forum is a great advertising platform for their channels and now also floatplane.  And I can only imagine how many Wan show topics and video ideas they get from posts on this forum... On top of that, there are obviously many great members of this community who consider answering the questions on this forum a hobby and do it just for fun.  The good news is that if you don't like answering questions of new people, you don't have to... Because someone else would love to.

Because that's the purpose of the forum.  People come here to get help.  Sometimes, if they can, and they want, they stick around to give back, but there's no expectation or requirement that they do.

Sure, some people will ask their tech support questions and then disappear never to be seen again, but having them comment on another thread first won't change that, since it's such a small hurdle.

 

Plus this forum is essentially a Tech Support Forum, since that's kinda what most of us are good at and we're happy to help

If I am honest with you, when I ran a IPS Forum I found the "No topics before x posts" never worked. They'd just spam a load of other topics until they'd start posting their own. 

 

It would create more spam than the small issue of topic in wrong section or there's already a topic for that.

 

So yeah, may look like a good idea on paper, just promotes spam in current topics.

At the very least there should be implementation of features that force a user to understand the tools available. It does a disservice to how robust the forum is when they ignore the quote button, don't display their system specs, and in general don't engage with helpers when asking a lazy question.

 

Furthermore, sometimes these questions are spammy in nature, someone joins and doesn't get a satisfying answer or doesn't get answered fast enough they'll just keep creating topics and most of the time it's really simple and something they should have searched online.

 

In the bulk of this topic we shifted from "new users shouldn't post" to "new accounts should be given a tutorial of brief functions to understand the forum". What if you had to understand that there were posting guidelines in every subforum, and had to acknowledge that info while making your account?  It wouldn't remove any functionality and just increase understanding of the forum. It would also probably cut down on spam because the process is more in depth, and spam is harder the more steps you need to complete to make a profile.

I totally disagree. Even though people can come here and get one off answers to questions, the only thing that keeps the forum afloat are the regulars. You don't keep regulars without socialization, that's why the front and center of the forum is the hub, with general discussion, off topic, news, and LTT official. Troubleshooting is way down the front page.

 

If everyone who uses this forum for fun left, nobody who comes and asks support questions would have their questions answered. Linus doesn't advertise the forum in his outros by saying "come ask text support questions on our community forum" he says "come join our community forum." I really feel as though a one and done account is discrediting all the hard work that goes into this platform, and the social aspect of it all.

An account doesn't take much space on a server. I doubt that's an issue compared to the files & images we upload daily.

Is there a problem with people asking for what they need and not coming back ? TBH I think its better than having people come back and either

1. Ask the same thing over and over
2. Spread missinformation (for example : People jabbering about how used parts are the worse thing in the world when THEY ARE MOST DEFINITIVLY NOT)
3. Wasting people's time.

In the end, if anyone had a question they could "Just google it" but you know what ?
Not everything can be found with a quick google search. People want opinions from other users who know their stuff and have experienced it first hand. 

Its easy to be confused in the tech world when you are new about what's realistic, what's advertizing bullshit and what's missinformation spread by someone who doesn't know what they're talking about.



IMO The solution to people not reading guidelines in say Tech News or Classified, is to have them read them and click a checkmark before they are allowed to even start typing. a sort of Alert that would require them to at least, at a glance, tell them what the section really is and perhaps redirect them to the right place. (And I will go and make a suggestion for that, tbh its better than preventing people from posting unless they have say, 20 replies or something because that just causes people to go away, or spam in hopes to gain acess to ask what they're here for.)

Ok, yeah, true. Although, I don't see that it should be less important or refused to a new user to ask tech support questions. There's no reason imo to prevent someone from asking a question by making them post a certain ammount of replies in whatever thread other than [example] Off Topic. that will create spam and or just have people leave because its not what they're here for.

Like I said, a tutorial approach would probably be a lot better. Have a pop up that gives the subforum posting guidelines, and maybe some helpful advice like "please list your PC specs for tech support"

 

Edit: or at the very least something to say "do not name your topic "PLEASE HELP URGENT!!!!!'"

2.People who post a new comment didnt bother to read all or at least read through some of the previous comments and the result is a new comment in which are similar to the previous comment.

 

I have no issues with new member are allowed to POST. I am just asking why and i already got the answer.
