I am trying to DIY a 5TB mobile drive and I have a question.

I have found a mobile hard drive enclosure that supports both USB 3.1 type-c and 15mm hard drive. Seagate Backup Plus Portable has a 5TB model that uses ST5000LM000 drive which is 2.5 inch 15mm thick drive. What I am trying to do is to buy a raw ST5000LM000 hard drive and put it into the hard drive enclosure. I don't want to buy a pre-built Seagate Backup Plus Portable because it does not use USB type-c connector.

 

Here is the question:

Do I need an external power adapter to power the drive?

According to Seagate data sheet, ST5000LM000 has a startup current of 1.2A at 5V which exceeds USB 3.0 power delivery (5V 1A).

However, the pre-built Seagate Backup Plus Portable 5TB model does not need a power adapter so I am confused.

Maybe I can power this drive only with USB cable? Is it possible?

how about just buying a usb 3.0 micro-b to type-c cable?
