Powerhouse for Blender.. Lots of cores

Hey all.

 

I am looking for an inexpensive way at building a system for blender.

 

Currently running

Ryzen 1700 8c with 3x 780ti GPU

 

I am looking at something with at least 2x the core count maybe 4x if possible.

 

I'd still need the 3x PCIe slots.

 

 

Does anyone have any recommendations into what would be a good buy? Like an old server perhaps?

 

Inexpensive as possible as I forsee issues getting it to work properly...

 

Or would a amd threadripper be the best choice.. tho I consider it expensive!

Not sure why you need 3 780tis, Blender itself doesnt use much GPU power.

Blender works magically with GPUs..

 

Especially with new compiler..

It uses all GPUs and all threads.. and set the tiles to 16x16 it frighten nuts..

 

Having a mega core rig would be insane.. as I actually see the CPU cores make a big difference!

Blender works really well with GPU rendering. It can also use multiple cards just fine.

The trick is to set correct size of the rendering tile. For CPU you want one small tile per each thread for GPU you want one large tile per each card. (thats just simplified explanation, there are obviously many other different settings affecting render times but this does apply everytime).

I like the idea of seeing if AMD would do a 16c AM4

Otherwise I might bite the bullet and go a 32c threadripper when 64c come out..

 

Price should drop :)

I mean, the top-of-the-line 32 core Threadripper ain't cheap, but for $1800 $1700 it's a fucking bargain.

BTW headache commend was Linus last word in that video!

 

The system he built he actually tested blender and the 16c threadripper outpaced the 64c by a hearty margin!

I think his comments avx and updated CPU is where it's important!
