HTC Vive or Oculus Rift?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

I can either spend £300 and get an Oculus rift.

Or spend £400 and get a HTC vive.

Which one is better bearing in mind that I would have to wait another month to get the vive.

Oculus Rift:
Better Controllers

Easy to set up

More comfortable (personal opinion)

Powered by USB (USB and HDMI as one cable)

Exclusive games tied to the Oculus Controllers (you can play these games on VIVE as well with ReVive but I dont know how good is the experience)

Not as good sensors as on VIVE

You can use cheap XBOX Kinect ONE for full body tracking (with SteamVR only using Driver4VR which is a paid software).

VIVE:

Better tracking

More difficult to set up

Powered separately by a power cable trough the adapter

USB and HDMI as in Oculus

Many add on HW for extra tracking, etc... (it gets very expensive very fast though)

It is not owned by Facebook

No. The Vive has one camera, the Rift has two.

The UI? The Rift can use basically the same SteamVR UI...

... the Rift works just fine standing up. And walking around. Sounds like the old "Rift can't do roomscale" myth.

The vive has two cameras, I know because I own one.

And sorry I totally wrote that wrong, lol my b. I meant the vive is easier to control the UI.

I'm cracking open a redbull lol

The Vive has a single camera, on the front.

You would need a 3rd sensor though with is like $49

Right. Well, the Vive and Rift both effectively come with two tracking thingies like that. They're just IR cameras with the Rift, and spinning lasers with the Vive.

The tracking with those basic setups can be a little worse on the Rift (depends on your room etc.), but you can bring it up to par with a 3rd tracking camera, and the Rift's still cheaper then.

Well, it's not strictly required, but probably a good idea. It's still cheaper than the Vive with that extra purchase.

By $50. Which the Vive does have pros/cons over the Oculus. I guess I'd rather not give Facebook money and give it to Steam instead

The Rift is $350 now, plus $60 for the 3rd tracking camera. The Vive is $500. So it's a $90 difference.

Another $100 difference if you count the audio headstrap for the Vive to match the Rift.
