I guess to me, I've always seen Vega as an extension of the original Fury cards. Don't get me wrong, I dig the Fury X (I plan on getting one soon, don't ask) but the Fury and Fury X, Vega 56 and 64 and Radeon VII have always felt like they were part of a plan that AMD wants to do but doesn't seem to work all too well in the consumer's eyes.

 

Basically, I should phrase it more like this:

R9 Fury X reached stock clocked 980 Ti performance levels.

Vega 64 reached approximately stock clocked 1080 levels.

Radeon VII is apparently reaching 2080 levels.

It's strange but that's why I see the lineup as an extension of the Fury cards, even if they aren't on a technical level.

Edit: on the other hand, just like so much of what CEO's say, these types of comments are usually more intended towards investors rather than consumers. Just assuring the investors: hey guys, we are still the best, don't worry about this AMD launch.

This is the same for me. I was waiting for the 2080Ti until I saw the price. I don't give care about Ray Tracing (At this current time) because it needs a few years to truly mature into a product I would be willing to pay for. DLSS is fine, but I have seen mixed results when using it. I feel the Radeon VII is the perfect card for me as I do quite a bit of work in Unreal Engine 4 but also do gaming as well. This card is the perfect balance of work/play out of any card on the market for me.

Kinda interesting that Nvidia would say that when Nvidia as a company isn’t in too good of a position these days and is only getting worse. 

 

Their bets in other industries aren’t paying off and their lifeline right now is RTX, which is overpriced, underwhelming, and also essentially non-existent. 

 

 

Nvidia is his baby, but he’s being irrational here.

I liked how Lisa talked about Core i9 9900K showcase they made. They weren't like "Uh, look how our CPU demolishes Intel's". She was like "Here's a competitor's flagship product on the left and our on the right". And she just went on pointing out power consumption and we all know AMD will also be a bit cheaper. She didn't say it, but we know that almost by default.

 

Same was with Radeon 7. She just said, look, here's the card, it performs about as good as RTX 2080. Here are some numbers, here's gameplay in new game at 100+ FPS (that was on 1080p iirc). And that was it. No showing of or being arrogant prick about it. That's how you roll among consumers. Jensen's approach only works among fanboys because he ends up being an arrogant, cocky prick with behavior he just exhibited.

Intel has always kinda had this clinical attitude up until more recently, when they started really delving into the world of gaming.

I mean Nvidia has that marketing strategy like Apple does, it will almost always sell just because of the brand alone. But yeah I agree, I think Jensen could tone it down quite a bit and I think it would help how some see the company. Rather than "here's our stuff its the best lol your stuff sucks btw". Nvidia should at least be like Intel and have a professional to the point of sometimes being boring press event.

AMD's 7nm architecture, not spending transistor count on RTX, and they cannot catch up to a 2080ti... process advantage, memory advantage, not wasting space on special features... still way behind!

 

Imagine a Turing card without RTX, on 7nm, with 16gb of HBM2, it would have like 7000+ cuda cores, it would demolish anything in game performance.

Everyone remember when AMD said their Fury-X would be a titan killer? Preforming similarly (or better). I remember.

 

Wait on benchmarks, but I'd honestly be shocked if the Vega 20 cut down actually matched the 2080. And even if it did. Nvidia could always choose to price them out of the market. 

 

On a base level, yes Jensen's comments reek of schoolboy elitism, but he isn't wrong. Freesync 1 as a standard is ludicrously too lenient for a consistent decent or good experience. (One of the reasons why FreeSync 2 increases requirements outside of just color support...) Likewise this GPU might be even end up being competitive right now, but it's very backwards looking, and as time goes on, it is actually going to be obliterated by much weaker cards using these sort of intelligent rendering modes (let alone RT). We all know this.

The Fury comparison is interesting, like the Fury X was a step ahead with HBM and didn't outperform a 980Ti,the Vega64 is great in compute but only matches the 1080, and now AMD is ahead with node size, but apparently still has a 300w TDP and about on par with a 2080.

I get that AMD doesn't need to have the best, although it could've been a really convenient opportunity while Nvidia is busy selling RTX on cards that don't make a lot of sense if you're not using the raytracing feature the performance isn't much better than a 10 series card unless you buy the 2080Ti.

AMD's Radeon 7 is essentially a repurposed workstation card with a few defective compute units, so if it performs on par with a 2080 that is still pretty decent.

I think Nvidia could have held off on the RTX cores and went with 7nm and HBM2 instead, RTX is impressive but the die is larger due to the RT cores and expensive to make.

It might be just me, but i like amd's way a lot actually.

Instead of talking trash like a gangsta teenager, let the product talk and let the people themselves draw conclusions of it.

 

Jensen kept saying "it just works", well that's fine, but there's a big difference between something working, and something working properly.

With that logic you can game on a GT1030 at 4k because "it just works", but in reality it doesn't.

And something working in 1 game quite badly isn't exactly a good example either...

 

It's interesting to see a big difference between those 2.

It can game though. It's faster than a RTX2080 and I am guessing HBM will work great at 4K+ resolutions. So maybe a 5K iMac with this would be good

PCworld  released an article last night detailing Jensen's response to AMD. Nvidia's CEO seems very dismissive of AMD, stating the following:

When asked about the launch of the AMD card itself, he said the following:

Jensen was also somewhat dismissive of FreeSync:

Even if the case had terrible airflow (it doesn't), still doesn't change the fact that power consumption comes at a cost: Heat.

 

Higher power consumption=more heat output. Even a GTX 970 can become noticeable when running at well over 1400MHz (around 200W power drawn).

Is it that appealing? If it was priced bit lower for a more anticipated price/performance ratio then sure... not that Nvidia pricing is an excuse for it either. And if someone needs a card with 16GB of VRAM there are Vega FE selling on ebay second hand for a quite nice prices, similar to like 1080Ti which will be better for pure gaming (and with FreeSync! :D). It looks like in EU Radeon 7 will be twice the price I payed for used Vega 64 if not more.

 

If Navi will be actual new and better arch and not just 7nm Polaris and AMD won't increase prices then RX 580/590 replacement should have like +40%-50% and start cannibalizing Radeon 7 with that price disparity. But it may turn out Navi is just 7nm usual GPU so +20% over Polaris and without ground breaking prices. Looks like, and some press is already saying that AMD is still behind on Navi and maybe even to early for 16 core Ryzen to show and so on.

The thing is, he isn't necessarily wrong that basically no effort went into the 'Radeon 7', all they did is just take one of their server GPUs, slap on a new cooler and ask Apple for a name.

And lets be real, if you can just take what is essentially a 'defective' card and rebrand it as a pretty good gaming card then you're doing something right.
