It's pretty bad for a CEO to do, although to be fair AMD has some bad marketing of their own which doesn't help them.

Ray tracing isn't anything new but it wasn't available for PC gaming, it isnt ready but Nvidia is actually pushing for better tech in games.

AMD's card is decent but still sort of underwhelming as its a refresh of Vega that is more aimed at content creation professionals than enthusiast gamers, especially with the $699 price tag.

AMD has always been a little too much of an Engineering House, rather than a company that makes Products. Nvidia has gotten that part a good bit better.

Is huang really that old, both look to be about the same age. The only explanation for him to be dr. Su's uncle and, she to be her niece is, on huang's side, he must have a way older bro or sis, who is married, had a child (dr. Lisa su), while he was born late.

Maybe he is actually older, but still looks young, from all that ray tracing he kept for himself for all those years, until he decided to share it.

A frequently recurring but not mandatory reason people go for AMD is perceived value. Intel and nvidia are capable of shifting similar products at higher pricing than AMD. I don't think an AMD undercut would bother either much. Intel's woes are more about halo effect, not a problem nvidia has to deal with.

How does it impact nvidia pricing? For gaming, it seems to be comparable to 2080 in both performance and price. We don't know about power but I wouldn't expect a significant drop from what hints they've given so far.

Chances are slim but if Radeon 7 comes in at MSRP and actually sells for that Nvidia may want to drop the RTX 2080 by a bit, that all depends on sales and availability too of course. Radeon 7 actually being cheaper but being unobtainable won't mean a thing.

 

I think this would have done nothing at all if RTX had a better release and there were more games, not even better performance but just actually more of them sooner. If Radeon 7 really is RTX 2080 performance for $100 USD less some people may actually want to buy it, not just out of brand supporting reasons.

The die size is too big to do that. The cards should perform better once games start to use the fact that it can preform 2x the functions at once per shader vs Pascal. There are certain games that actually use the architecture well already like the new wolfenstien and you can see how much the performance gap between Pascal vs Turing increaces. It's just a matter of time before more games start utilizing it as well and then the value of the new cards will really show.

See if the price was a hundred dollars cheaper if would be competitive.

Right now it has no real user benchmarks (what's not to say a Nvidia running Ryzen 3000 would work better) and is still only as good as a high end card two years ago (which is now even cheaper).

 

Maybe they would have a GDDR6 version and we can talk buying.

In a quick look the announced price of the '7 is about same as what the 2080 is available for right now. What advantage does the #7 have? If ram quantity is your thing that would be an advantage for the '7, but that's going against RTX. I see zero reason for nvidia to consider dropping prices in that context. I'd expect '7 to drop before 2080 does unless it finds a niche outside gaming.

Man do people overlook colleague banter, or in this case it's even family. This is nothing new and nothing more than one CEO giving an elbow nudge to another. This kind of thing happens all the time behind the scenes. This kind of banter can stoke the fire of friendly competition between the two, pushing them to innovate and bring more to the table. 

 

Personally I find it hilarious and it gave me a good laugh. This industry gets all too serious sometimes, and with there being so much tension it's good to have a bit of humor.

 

Anyways this is just my outlook and some food for thought.

Current RTX 2080 pricing is all over $700 for the popular cards or aren't blower coolers. The cheapest not terrible ones I could find are the EVGA Black Edition and Gigabyte Windforce 3. They are a bit lower clocked than the better ones, GPU Boost helps with that but the better coolers fair better. Power limit is a real thing too, kind of sucks.

 

From what I understand the RTX 2000 series is selling pretty much as cheaply as they can, at least for the AIBs.

 

For the better cards at the higher $700 to $800 range and the FE models that more people want, excluding FE, a card from AMD that competes with them and is cheaper that does not have a power limiter strangling the card it could be appealing. Speaking realistically more people are going to want to buy and would buy the Strix, XC Ultra, FTW etc cards than the most basic ones. When you are spending that much it is actually wiser to go a little more to get a better card, even if the usefulness is negated by the power limits.

Yes, I used a "starting from" price for 2080. The AMD cooler shown looks ok but unremarkable, comparable level to an entry Windforce card of which I got 4 in the last 13 months myself. If they allow AIBs to join in, might the price not also go up as we get better coolers and more RGB?

Vega is an afterthought and pretty much a vent hole for dies that didnt make it to becoming server dies. 

 

im expecting 2 lower skews to increase the per die profit.

The card hasn't even been reviewed yet how can you make such claims. It's more powerful in TFlops than an RTX2080 and has better specs in terms of memory and bandwidth.

based on what numbers have been given and what we know when AMD themselves compared them. they are very similar in terms of performance.

That's how I see it as well, but not many sees it this way. Some here is taking this thing way too seriously.

The sad thing is that they market it as a gaming card but it doesnt seem like it is. That memory will benifit workstations more then gaming and there is nothing new to help improve gaming performance or graphics quality other then 7nm which come with 25% improved performance. I cant help but feel like this card was made for Apple's newest version of desktops and thats really the only systems you will find them in. It just kinda sucks we need competition in this market.

Lol the card is literally an MI50 rebranded. The MI50 is for HPC use for deep learning applications

I mean when AMD is making the R9 Fury X v3, you can't really blame Nvidia for that response.
