I was really glad when the world seemed to be able to decide that 16:9 is what screens should be. So you can have a 16:9 TV and watch 16:9 content. It was like when the world decided on standard charging cable for phones. A really good thing. The world was moving forward towards a better tomorrow.

 

Why we are going back, I honestly don't understand and it makes me mad. Why would you want to screw with the standard? Why move backwards to a worse world? I bought my current phone like a month ago and it's 16:9. I won't buy a new one until this one breaks and I'm hoping to get at least 8 years out of it. Not that I would watch video on my phone. I have a TV.  It's 16:9 and the next one will be, too. It's the standard. It should stay that way forever.

Aspect ratio is more than just about filling a screen with pixels. Aspect ratio can also be an artistic choice made by the creator that dramatically affects the framing and feel of the content.

I can understand watching on phone, but IMO when you're on phone you don't care about video quality. Otherwise you'd be on the TV or PC.

 

This further disqualifies the apparent reason for the change.

Going back to mono sound can also be an artistic choice. It's dumb is what I'm saying.

Well, some times you'll hear music tracks with say guitar and mandolin in the left ear and fiddle and another guitar in the right ear, with bass being in both channels. That would be an example of artistic mono channeling. But I see your point in this particular case.

This is just stupid, i rather have black bars top and bottom than see black bars on sides. on the other hand, i really hope TV manufacturers never go to widescreen aspect aswell

That's nonsensical. Black bars are bad regardless of where they are.

How did that video last over 15 minutes without mentioning WHY widescreen looks better? Our eyes see wider than higher. Our eye sight or more of a wide oval rather than a circle or square, so widescreen looks more natural. That said, 16:10 is said to be the perfect ratio.

Mono is certainly better than early stereo recordings.

umm... as i said it was more about the technical side. them saying why it's better is subjective.

I still remember when 16:9 was new and people complained about the black bars on their 4:3 TVs and we somehow survived. History has a way of repeating itself.

what you posted in no way justify black bars makes things better, you're still seeing widescreen content on you the palm of your hand on a device with black bars which might or might not look good as it's subjective. 


it is better to have black boxes horizontally than vertical black bars was my opinion. i really can't imagine people liking vertical bars on a widescreen monitor.

What I don't honestly get is how people can watch on such small damn screens, it strains my eyes too much. None of y'all that do are normal and are gonna kill your eyes. Just watch on a larger monitor or a TV and stop giving me the heebie jeebies.

I use a 16:9 screen but, I honestly couldn't care less about the black bars, they don't bother me.

 

Seems like most of us use 16:9 here but, as far as I know, most people who watch LTT do so on their phones so, that's why they switched to 2:1.

Make sure to quote or tag people, so they get notified.

Your claim is not supported by your reference. In fact, your source explains that a more square aspect ratio makes more sense for phones, rather than a wider aspect ratio. And wide is only for "epic" "cinematic" content, while casual entertainment leans toward taller aspect ratios.

 

LTT videos are not epic or cinematic, they're casual entertainment.

 

Also: The video itself is in 16:9. Even these cinematic folks think 16:9 is the right aspect ratio for youtube.

 

Also also: Another "cinematic" feature is 24FPS video. Is LTT going to adopt that? I think not.

Yes. It's only some recent phones which are 18:9 or in my case 18.5:9.

 

I watch most youtube videos on my desktop or laptop followed by tablet and then smartphone.

 

On a smartphone I'd prefer to watch a video vertically than horizontally.
