you don't know this. According to apple, people are upgrading their phones less often now and as your chart shows, 16:9 phones are still being made. You don't know which phones will sell more, the 18:9 or the 16:9.
As for right now, only a small amount of people view videos on a 18:9 screen. He should focus on now, when is when most people watch his videos.

Cameras have circular lenses, completely uncropped video/pictures would be a circle. 18:9 is literally just 16:9, except more of the bottom is cropped out.
 

Actually no the CMOS is a rectangle so the "cropping" is just what the sensor sees. Cameras are circular because it's easier to make the glass that way and physically use

Even then, most 18+:9 phones have their UI designed explicitly so that navigation and notification bars coexist with 16:9 content, whereas older phones lacking hardware buttons where still 16:9 or close enough to it that gestures summoning the bars was all fucked.

Most camera sensors is 3:2. In phones too. (Some are 5:4), but no one of them is wider. 

 

I guess what he just means is that the wider you crop a video to, the less of the sensor you are using.

Their cameras are 8k, I assure you they aren't cropping anything useful and adding usefulness in width. It is here to stay get over it

My phone has the option to zoom in, my TV does not. 16:9 was better. 

 

Also phone screen ratios are still changing, I think Samsung is going to 19.5:9 or something like that with the next models with the new Infinity O displays. 18:9 is not a standard. 16:9 is.

LMG's excuse to be using 18:9, is that a large proportion of their userbase watch videos on their mobile...
But does Youtube tell them the resolution of mobile devices used to watch their videos? I'm checking my analytics(what there is of it anyway of two videos, I'm no youtuber) and I'm only seeing the OS of the mobible device used.

I'd argue that plenty of us have older/cheaper phones that are still 16:9 after all.
They are essentially catering to what is likely to be the minority of users with flagship phones bought in the last 2 years or so.(Likely because LMG employees all have flagship phones)

They are forgetting that a normal person doesn't need to buy a new phone every 6 to 12 months... Or need the latest and greatest phone, a low-mid range phone(100~300$) these days does the job just fine for most people and those are usually 16:9.

 

That said, I watch video on my 28" 4k monitor, while the black bars are somewhat annoying, my previous monitor used to be 16:10 (1200p), I can live with black bars.

My phone is also 16:9.

The thing i don't get is that most 18:9 phones have a notch so they either see cropped too (like most of us) or they miss a part of the video.

And those phones have rounded corners, so even without a notch it's never a proper 18:9 screen. If you want to watch video content without missing anything, you WILL need to step back from 18:9 to 16:9 or you will miss pieces.

as long as it's not fake 21:9 cropped onto 16:9 on my 16:10 display.

Personally it annoys the shit out of me when watching on my TV, every other YouTuber i'm subscribed to is 16:9 and then when it comes to an LTT video its all weird on the aspect ratio.

I'd actually like slightly bigger than their 16:9 cousins (to keep about the same vertical space, just make em wider) 18:9 monitors. 

Like if 27" is good for 1440p, then we should have an 18:9 "1440p" 29" monitor too

I think it would be a nice middle ground between 21:9 and 16:9.

Personally, I don't mind.

Watching most LTT videos on my PC, I find the bars don't really bother me, as they look more like letter boxes i.m.o., which - although not always "fitting" the video's "style"(I think I remember watching an 18:9 LTT video for the first time, I guess I subconsciously noticed something was different, although it didn't feel wrong, but a bit more dramatic, as, at first, I thought the aspect ratio was only going to be different for the first part of the video, so that one's on me??), so to speak -, kind of add a touch of "cinematicness", if that makes sense... :P

 

(I only own devices with screens that have 16:9 aspect ratios by the way?)

Make sure to tag and/or quote people so they get notified... :P:D

I don't mind the new aspect ratio. I'm watching on a 21:9 so either way it's not gonna be perfect and I don't watch the videos in fullscreen mode anyway.

You could argue that the "core fans" were the ones that were there first, and actually liked the tech content, and are actually pretty tech savvy while the fans LMG are catering to now are the "new" ones who aren't super tech savvy and want different, more exciting, more exaggerated content.
