9700k + 212 Evo

Well, update if anyone ever cares...

I ended up with a 8700k, and I am doing 5 GHz at high 60's to 70's with the 212 evo... Not half bad IMO. Thats aida64 or realbench load, with fan at 100%. In games, I have fan WAY lower, about 1000 RPM vs 2200 which is max, and it sits in the 50's. Can't argue with that!

Title says it all. Is it the best solution, no. But, I have a Hyper 212 in the outgoing PC (3770k @4.6 Ghz) and the mounting is the same. Obviously its hard to say "I don't need to overclock" but heatsinks can always be purchased later.

 

Just wondering if anyone has real world examples of a 212 on a 9700k, what temps it shows, and what OC head room there is, possibly just 4.8 Ghz on all cores would be fine for now. No need to get crazy with it, its a photo editing and light gaming PC (has a 1070 FTW in it on a PRedator 165hz 1440p panel), so the CPU even at stock really shouldn't be much of an issue at all.

Good for Stock, overclocking? not quite... could do something if silicon is good and you don't mind cpu fan locked at 100% but at this point I'd say it's all pointless and yes just go stock because that won't bottleneck a 1070 at all and at photo editing you still have stupidly high single core turbo boost.

I mean, my 8086k takes it in stride, should work for stock.

Lightroom does use all 8 threads (in this case would be cores) no problem, but I agree it’s still a hell of a chip.

Eh that's higher than I'd want on such a chip. I'd have spent money on a better cooler.

I disagree. 60’s to 70’s in unrealistic heavy workloads, on a cooler that I have had for 7 years thus no investment needed, that is a totally viable option.

 

My 6700k under water (rig in my sig) at 4.7 gets to the same temps at 4.7 @ 1.305v. Granted, the fans are spinning at 550 rpm, but point remains for a stress test load, both are well within reason. Why spend 100 bucks on a AIO or Noctuah heatsink if a hyper 212 works. I am actually shocked at how well it does work.... I didn’t expect to be able to get 5ghz with it, if I really wanted, she has more in her, but there is really no point. A 5ghz 8700k is more than enough to feed the gtx 1070 that rig has in it.

In my opinion, if you already have a decent cooler, no reason to upgrade unless you make a substantial difference. Even with a NH-D15 I bet my temps would only drop 10c tops... Just not worth it for a computer I only use three times a week.
