Posted December 31, 2018 · Original PosterOP LG is, of course, set to release new monitors at CES this year. This one was revealed a little early, and it looks like it's going to be the new God of the ultra wide monitor market. Enter the 38GL950G. I really wish LG would come up with some nicer nomenclatures. The monitor boasts some impressive specs: 38" curved display with a 21:9 aspect ratio 3820 x 1600 144hz GSync IPS panel 2ms response time 89% of the DCI-P3 color space 450 nit brightness Price TBD (but really, if you have to ask, you can't afford it) The impressive points here are the brightness, and the pixel response time of 2ms on an IPS panel. I hope they make a FreeSync version too, but I think it's rather unlikely as this is more of an upper market monitor. Personally, this is the perfect monitor IMO. It hits all the right targets for me, and will likely be what I pick up this summer/fall. I also love how it's not overly gamer, with just a red accent. It'd better have VESA mounts though, as that stand is pretty intrusive to desk real estate. I cannot wait for CES this year! What do you think? Would something like this sway you to give up a multi monitor set up? It'll have to be wider for that, which is why I am waiting for that upcoming 5120x1440 120hz ultrawide from samsung. The only issue with that though, is going to be the cost... Having switched from a 16:9 three monitor setup (2x 27" 1920x1080 + 22" 1920x1080) to a three monitor setup with a 21:9 34" (2560x1080p) I have to say that the 21:9 aspect ratio is pretty awful for gaming, streaming, and content consumption. It's great for productivity but 21:9 is so uncommon that even when a game does support it, it's rarely a good experience. I don't regret getting one because I find myself spending more time in spreadsheets and SSH sessions than I do in games like GTA V (which looks awful all stretched out). All aboard the Floatplane! Content consumption? Did you watch any cinema format movies on it? It's glorious and with no black bars anywhere. Gaming agree tentatively - it heavily depends on the level of support for 21:9 the developer bakes into the game. The only thing for productivity better than an Ultrawide is a wider ultrawide. Posted December 31, 2018 I can't seem to be impressed other than the 144 Hz at that resolution. Everything else seems to be ho-hum for higher-end monitors. If it was priced at like $800 then I might give it more credit. I have a blog! And a list of guides I've posted

If it was priced at like $800 then I might give it more credit. It's an extra million pixels over 3440x1440. This is basically the proportionate difference between going from 2560x1440 to 2560x1600 (minus the aspect ratio change). 1 hour ago, FloRolf said: Make it 2160p high next time though. Other than that (and the price...), nice! Bet ya $1799. 5040x2160 (10.8 million pixels) at 144Hz would be too hard to drive. Without compression, DP1.4 can only drive 98Hz at 4K with HDR. To reach an additional 2.6 million pixels at more than 60 FPS, you would need a new display port connector and a new graphics card (and the monitor). Unless you mean just a 16:9 version. The PG277UQ from Asus (or the Acer version I forget the name of) would honestly be cheaper, but only 27 inches. Some expect the 34+ inch version this year, but if you have to ask the price, you're better off buying another monitor.
