What to expect on RTX prices?

jtomasrl

Im thinking on buying an RTX 2070, both of it gaming capabilities at 1440p (thats my aim) and artificial intelligence uses, specially for neural networks training (best performace per dollar). I can wait until march 2019 to buy it so my question is, should I expect a price drop after CES 2019 and AMD GPUs announcement or should the prices mantain at around $500 for a long time?

I wouldn't expect a massive price drop after CES, maybe $40 max? I think for the most part it'll stay around $500.

Without other products on the market, prices should remain the same. If the AMD graphics cards actually become available to buy, that's a different story.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

They're not going anywhere.  From what I have read, the best case scenario for AMD still does not have their cards challenging the top of nVidia's product stack.  Intel is our best hope imho.

There's nowhere you could have read this that's credible enough to rely on. The rumors are all over the place for next gen AMD, even the name scheme.

If AMD was able to compete with nVidia's top cards it would shock the tech world, investment world, and gamer world.  It would be awesome, but it is not going to happen this gen.  Sorry.

This is why the term "future proof" is not legit. AMD had Vega 56 for the 1070 and Vega 64 against the 1080. It is not unrealistic that they can improve their graphics cards with 7nm and get a competor for the 2080 ti.

"Future proof" is a bogust term.  That I agree with.  I disagree that AMD competing with the 2080 ti this gen is realistic.  The only way I think it could happen would be a multi-gpu card...been there, done that, and it sucked every time.

But I still don't see why. Vega refinements could come in the form of less voltage for better temps, smaller process node, and more compute units, all of which would position a new graphics card to be a serious high end competitor.

I am not interested in trying to convince you to agree with me.  I do not think it is going to happen this gen.  That is my opinion.  You are free to have your own, and I actually hope you are right.  I did not enjoy paying $1400 for my 2080 ti.  I like competition in the high end market.

I mean, you could just say what you think it is that is restricting AMD from advancing I totally he high end space and I'll just take it into consideration, you know, like a discussion usually goes. I just don't see why it would be impossible for competition, and why would Intel be able to pull it off? Unless Raja Koduri is magic

I do not think AMD has focused their comparatively limited resources on competing in the high end market this generation.

Intel has literally over 1000% larger market cap and the resources that come with that....and Raja may be magic.  lol.

I've been wondering the same thing, i have around 300 dollars to spend on a graphics card and was thinking of either buying a 1070 or waiting until the rtx 2060 card comes out and the price drops to 300-350 dollars

lets imagine, theoretically, AMD does match 2080 ti for this gen. What has history has to tell us about price changes related to GPUs? does it impacts in the near future? I mean, in every other product it would, immediately

NVidia is controlling the prices of both Pascal and Turing cards. Remember, they (and AMD) kicked production into overdrive during the cryptocurrency craze and basically the bulk of the stock arrived when mining was slowing down. There is a lot of excess inventory for Pascal, so to avoid new RTX cards from competing with them, they have higher prices for Turing. It will probably not drop below $500 anytime soon.
