The iPhone XR sold better than the iPhone X in its first month

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

After countless articles claiming the doom and failure of the iPhone XR, it would appear that, like many predicted, the iPhone XR outsold all other iPhones in 2018 according to data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners

Quote

While there aren’t any raw numbers to tell exactly whether the iPhone X or the iPhone XR outdid the other in first-month sales, new data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners shows that relative to all other available iPhones, the cheaper iPhone of this year was more popular than the expensive one of last year.

cirp-iphone-xr.jpg.5f29090f4f8f0f8734bfbdb7eca854b8.jpg

This chart actually shows interesting relative sales data comparing Apples large range of iPhones over a 3 year period. Now of course people will claim that none of it matters in the end, because iPhone sales are down overall, but ?‍♂️

Quote

A survey of 165 US consumers sampled over the first 30 days of availability  shows that the iPhone XR took 32 percent of total iPhone sales. The iPhone XS Max took about 20 percent while the iPhone XS took 15 percent — the $1,000+ iPhones seem to be trending as previous market analyses have told. Compared to the same period last year, the iPhone X had 30 percent share, the iPhone 8 had 21 percent and the iPhone 8 Plus had 18 percent.

This is great news, the iPhone XR is my favorite iPhone in the 2018 lineup and the more popular the phone, the more likely there are to be repair programs and good product support for it. Apple has expressed interest in making sure iPhone XR gets continued software improvements, specifically to the functionality of Haptic Touch, the substitute for 3D Touch. A strong performance in sales means that Apple is likely to retain that promise and continue to improve the product experience with software updates in the coming months.

The most popular buyers of iPhone are previous iPhone owners, however there has been a substantial amount of people coming over form Android to iPhone

Quote

New iPhone buyers are overwhelmingly upgrading from other iPhones, though more Android users have been switching over: in the same 30-day period, Android switchers made up 16 percent of the population, up 5 points from the year before.

So to all the haters who thought that the XR was going to be the iPhone 5c all over again........

Interesting to see, to be fair, if we're comparing the XR to the 5C, the XR has had much superior marketing than the 5C had. Even though it is a more budget orientated model, the marketing still makes you feel like you're buying a premium device. The iPhone 5C on the other hand...

When the camera comes in (time-stamp added), it says it all. Sure it was a different time but it looks so small and cheap, with the bright blue plastic just screams cheap and budget.

The XR has more or less the same build materials right as the other models? Aluminum is it?

But that's wrong too, because XS is actually the middle model. The XS Max is the most expensive one, it's easy to remember, it's the Maximum price Apple could get away with.

Makes sense. XR is basically a "8S" or "9" which is the logical upgrade path for most users.

The XR was at least actually cheaper. The 5C was a VERY slightly upgraded 5 (Better front facing. More LTE bands.) at the same price the 5 would have dropped to. Painfully stupid decision. I still say that an XS at 100 or 200 cheaper would probably sell better and completely get rid of the need for an XR.

Yeah, personally. I'd strike for a iPhone XR likely. My S8+'s payment agreement ends in August but I may likely end up paying it out early since Verizon is "so kind" to not charge an "early termination fee" by paying out early before the end of the "installment payment plan agreement". Likely, I'd front about $250 of a down payment of a iPhone XR on an installment payment plan.

Yeah good point, the XS/XS Max are properly out of reach for most consumers, it was a substantial increase in price this time around. We'll see if this means Apple will step up their budget products. The iPad has some reasonable budgets models now.

I don't get why Apple would even build "Budget" devices. It goes against their current branding as a fashion/premium device company. Don't even get me started on iPad "Pro".

I think people are starting to become aware of how overpriced these devices are. Not just Apple but you could put Samsung in that same boat.

My plan is to buy an expensive good model and hold on to it as long as possible. I don't like upgrading every 2 years or so simply because they are so expensive and my older iPhone still feels fluid and responsive. So for me, I either upgrade regularly to budget models or buy an expensive model and squeeze as much life as I can out of it. And the reason is use iOS devices is because they last longer of time from my experience.

You're right, the iPad "Pro" is...a tablet. Not a laptop or computer. If it runs Mac OS then I'd be interested, but not with iOS.

I mean, it's the cheapest (a better term would be "least expensive" but I digress) of the 2018 iPhones. ("Cheap" is relative here, mind you. It's still priced in the upper end of the spectrum)

And you don't sacrifice much in comparison to the more expensive XS/Max minus the display resolution and a tad less RAM.

Honestly an easy decision if you don't care for OLED or just want an iPhone with the current form factor but don't need everything the XS has.

Not to mention that the XR is actually pretty compelling, even ignoring it being cheaper than the XS, given the larger screen.
