For something simple like that, just use Windows Movie Maker.

Adobe Premier Pro CC, using it since Premier Pro 1.0 came out in 2003, it's the best you can get for the money.

You could even use something free and simple like Camtasia if you just want to do something that easy.

Premier, there's a reason why most Youtuber use it religiously. It's simple, clean UI, and uses hardware acceleration properly.

Sony vegas or sony movie maker. Both are easy to use. I would do movie maker because it is $50 not $500

Sony movie maker? You mean Sony Vegas Movie Studio, right?

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

Well... Sony Vegas Movie studio isn't well known at all, unlike the professional version of it, Vegas Pro.

Vegas Movie studio really isn't as cut-down version of the Pro version as people think it is with it's 60€ or-so price. Still almost no-one knows that the Movie studio even exists.

True. I do know of it because I have recommended it to people it really is like vegas but missing a few features. For most people the movie studio is more than enough, but for my uses I do need vegas and that is why I bought it.

Adobe premiere is an epic program, however complete overkill for simply cropping a video.  Plus its $900

Um... If you are using a mac, you can use iMovie or Final Cut Pro X. If you are using windows, I usually use Sony Vegas Pro 12. Adobe Premier Pro CC is a good choice too. :D But if you are just gonna cut and crop the videos, the iMovie on mac or Windows Movie Maker on windows will do the job.

DaVinci Resolve free, very likely the best video editing program that's available for free.  The paid studio version is even better but the free version is already more than capable for what you want done.

Using an NLE for that easy job is a waste of resources.

Just use ffmpeg

Try this mp4 avi converter. It's the combination of converter and editor. You can convert most all of the formats and crop videos as you like.

I am not sure what you want OP.

You say you want a video editing program, which usually means a non-linear video editing program like Premier Sony Vega or something along those lines. but then you say you want it for things like cutting out a 5 second clip from a video. You most certainly do not need an entire video editing program for that.

The quickest and most efficient way of cutting out a 5 second clip would be to use ffmpeg.

The commands you want to know is:

-ss this specifies a start time. You can specify it in seconds if I recall correctly.

-t specifies the clip length

-c copy which will tell ffmpeg to not recode anything, which means both the audio and video will look exactly like it did before being cut in terms of quality, and it will be very fast (unlike reencoding which can take a long time).

So the command would be:

ffmpeg -ss 50 -i OriginalVideoFile.mp4  -t 5 -c copy ShortClip.mp4

I recommend you make a backup before you try this, in case something goes wrong.

For converting videos, Handbrake is good. That can trim videos too. It's mostly just a GUI for ffmpeg.
