Acer Predator Triton 700

Hey all,

So I'm in the market for a new laptop and noticed a significant sale going on on Amazon. The Triton 700, rocking a gtx 1080 max q, i7-7700hq, 512GB SSD M.2, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 120hz IPS display, etc, at just under $2,000. CPU is a bit older, and 1080 will be replaced at CES with 2080 for mobile, but at that price, is it worth getting? Can I count on it staying relevant for about another 3 years at least?

I would be using it for gaming, school, coding, and work (stock/real estate).

The 1080 max q thermal throttles heavily, and the i7 7700hq is not incredibly impressive anymore.

Unless they have a magical thermal solution announced with the new 20xx series cards I would not expect any real world performance gain as we are already well past thermal limitations in the current laptop form factors.

So... if you want an ultrabook that is incredibly powerful on paper and will last 2-3 years then yes it is a good buy. If you want something that is not going to overheat and last, then look at something more substantial.

DON'T get it. 7700HQ is a gen older and 1080MQ inside will only have 1070 like performance

Location? Budget? Usage? Preferred max weight in kg/lbs and min battery life in hours?

Desktop specs:

Not particularly interested in picking up a gaming laptop just yet, was only considering it cause of the low price for specs which typically would exceed 3k on a mobile platform. I am actually thinking I will return my current laptop (Asus Zephyrus) and get the Huawaei Matebook D and build a micro-atx desktop, or possibly an RTX laptop after CES. Looking to game at 120-144 FPS, minimum of 80-100, on ultra settings. 1440p preferred, but willing to do 1080p if the price difference is truly significantly. Sadly there are not many laptops on the market just now that will meet those specs in an actually portable form. Hoping a RTX 2080TI/2080 might be able to hit around there for under $2500.

There never will be either. We are at the limits of the thermal solutions being used today. "Portable" high spec laptops just throttle. They could be easily outperformed by a lower spec laptop with a proper cooling solution.

For example the Triton 700 you listed. It has a 1080 max q. If this was a perfect world and the laptop was able to keep the card cool it would perform on par with a full 1070. Unfortunately the laptop is not able to do this, so you will see 1070 performance for a moment or two, then you will throttle down to 1050ti-1060 equivalent performance.
