Go with a 1080 Ti.  The 2080 is only if you game at 4k resolution.  1440p the 1080 Ti will do fine and 1080p it will be blazing fast.  thx

WTF are you talking about? 1080 Ti is a quite capable 4k gaming GPU.

Ya, but the RTX 2080 will rekt GTX 1080TI when RTX technology got optimized very well.

Yes your right but there are dips from constant 60fps , with 2080 you wont get those dips to 40's and 50's fps,, for example......   :)

What programs do you use? Would you know if VRAM is beneficial? (in that case the 1080ti has 11GB)

I think for what hes trying to do, or the things hes trying to do, the more VRAM the better.  So ya 11GB with 1080 Ti and 14GB with 2080 RTX.  Want to be future proof or code ray tracing then 2080 is your choice here.

so the RTX 2080 has nothing to contribute to 3D Design and Game Dev?

Puget Systems did some tests of the new videocards in a video editing application. (Adobe Premiere Pro)

https://www.pugetsystems.com/recommended/Recommended-Systems-for-Adobe-Premiere-Pro-CC-143/Hardware-Recommendations

VRAM will directly affect the type of footage you can deal with in editing.

Footage Resolution 1080p 4K 6K 8K+
Minimum VRAM capacity 4GB 6GB 8GB 10GB+

Hi

For game development keep your old machines. The biggest mistake I have made in game development is not shooting code or 3D to a minimum spec machine early on.

For 3D in games, rendering in 3D programs does not matter. If I did it at all I used CPU rendering.

Previews matter most. A Quadro card is best for that.

The only reason to get a RTX card for game development is for inside engine testing, since any previews in a 3D program won't behave the same.

I would say build a video production rig. Any decent setup for video would be fine for 3D for game development because the hole point is to keep it light.

Being an indie dev means you are your own quality control so also having a minimum spec machine for testing beside your production rig is a must as far as I am concerned.
