Removing and replacing cpu cooler

Hi all,

I was building my pc for the first time and, at a certain point, i had to remove the cpu cooler while i had already applied thermal paste. I put it right back up afterwards.

 

Will this change the temp performance of the cpu? If yes by how much?

should i reapply thermal paste?

You re-utilized the old thermal paste it had on? or it was like you installed the cooler but then you removed it and later installed again?

 

Ideally you should re-apply but if it is the latter you can check out CPU temps through MSi Afterburner or any other reliable software under load to see if they are still okay.

you should have used new thermal paste, it makes a seal, once you break it the next time you reseated the cooler most probably got air bubbles on it. Still you wont kill anything but it isn't ideal.

I'd recommend using AIDA 64 extreme trial edition since it is free. The one problem i see here is that there might be air trapped in between the thermal paste, which might result in problems on stress. Since AIDA 64 Can check each core's temp you should really look out for maybe 1 or 2 cores that have a certain temp difference to the other ones. Imo i'd always re-apply thermal paste after removing an old cooler.

Its still the same cooler, i just had to removed it cos i misplaced it in the wrong direction haha

Yeah so i installed the cooler, removed it and then reinstalled again, the thermal paste should still have been very fresh

It's fine. The difference is generally very small and often within margin of error.
