  • 1 year later...

i have about 300 cds for music, another 100 for audiobooks, about 500 movies on dvd, and like 100 game between cds and dvds. Ive gotten like 30gb off of all of my games, and am working on turning a spare 500gb hdd into a media storage drive to share across my chromebooks, tv, and laptops. I dont use it much, but I have 2dvd/cd drives.

I can do about 20 discs/hour with one when backing up games. i've never tested, but i'd bet 50 a hour with one disc drive on music cds. dvds are slow. like 5 a hour with one drive, using handbrake to save to a mp4.

I guess my dvd/cd drive is important to me.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

I really want an ITX case with decent space for components and a 5" drive bay for a Blu ray drive. Would save me a monitor input.

I have a USB one if I ever need it, not had a drive internally for a decade.

External USB drive from LG. I'd have an internal one, but no case has optical drive bays anymore. I use an optical drive because I still regularly buy CDs for the lossless music. I wish more cases included it as an option. It bugs me that some cases are as big as a tank but there's still optical drive bay, not even a removable one.

When building a system for my folks, I noticed that the optical drive we had was IDE instead of SATA (oops). So instead of going out and buying a SATA one, I just grabbed one of those IDE to USB adapters from Vantec, ran the cable through to the back of the case and called it a day. I did find one of those rear USB hubs than runs off of the internal USB headers. So I might use that instead to clean things up.

I just used mine tonight to burn a BIOS update CD for an old PC I'm working on. And no, I couldn't do it via USB flash stick, that old PC don't do that

I don't have one, and I suppose I haven't really missed it, or had a situation where I needed one and didn't have one.

I have an old copy of Flight Simulator 2004 that I wanted to load up for nostalgia sake, which I obviously can't do.

Otherwise, can't say it bothers me.

If I want to watch films or listen to music I'll use something built specifically for that purpose.

The only time I ever use mine are when installing Windows 10 and to watch DVDs whenever I have free time such as James Bond, or sometimes read the X-ray CDs cause my parents want to see their bones....😳😳.

I have this drive as a spare, apparently somewhat rare these days. Pretty much does everything even HD-DVD and light scribe. Also have an external Lenovo I use once a year if that.

I have a CD/DVD writer inside my desktop.

I still like to have the option of having one on any pc mainly for backing up all my data once or twice a year.

I've bought external hard drives before only to have them fail so quickly (1 year) that I refused to buy them anymore.

Plus you have to pay to get cloud storage and I really hate the idea of having so many subscriptions to pay for everything.

It just seems like you get limited storage space in windows too unless you pay or buy office and I've notice the price for it went up again.

I also use usb thumb type drives for important backups but I'm always worried one with stuff that is important to me will fail.

Even though I've never actually seen that yet.

So the DVD writer option is nice for not putting all your eggs in one basket and not having another subscription to pay.

Plus honestly I love any hardware and love installing it and playing with it.

I feel if I'm willing to buy the hardware then why shouldn't they sell something of the sort.

I still have a regular CD/DVD burner that I painted white for an old build, but I haven't used it or used any cases with drive bays for many, many years. For the purposes of the survey, I have an external CD/DVD burner that I use in the rare instances I come across an old disc or what have you.

I want a drive like that. One drive that could do it all would be sweet

I've done the watching Blu-rays on my PC thing, and have given up and bought a separate Blu-ray player, the software was expensive and shit.

I still have a Blu-ray drive in my PC, but it's long overdue replacement (the PC not the drive). I haven't used it for probably a couple of years, though I will probably still keep a USB one in my desk draw when I replace my PC just in case.

VLC didn't play them when I tried, though that was a good few years ago. I believe it's a licencing thing, but they may have found away around it by now?

Maybe I haven’t tried a blu ray drive with my case not having one only a USB DVD drive.
