Sound only works when balanced left or right

Zephos

Hey guys,

Recently got an old amp and speakers from my father-in-law. Plugged my speakers in, ran a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable from the front speaker port on my mobo to the portable in on the amp, and tested the sound. I was hugely disappointed to find it sounded like I was underwater. After some fiddling, i found that if i pull the slider in my realtek software all the way to left or right, everything sounds correct, but i'm obviously missing the opposite channel.

Anyone have ideas on how to fix this? I really like the speakers and my Sennheiser's benefit greatly from the amplification. Thanks

Have you tried using a different device or the back audio port instead of the front?

It sounds like you're sending a stereo signal into a mono input, could be the cable too.

Could you upload a few pictures of everything?

Sounds like one of the channels is connected where ground should be, making the output the difference between the two channels. If you play mono content, do you get no sound at all?

Hi guys, sorry i'm so late in responding (a week :/ )

It seems it's an issue with the receiver. I get a couple tiny little clicks of kick drum when listening to a mono track, and underwater noises with a stereo track. I have the same problem when using headphones through the receiver. It sure seems like I've wired the speakers up correctly, although I'm no A/V expert. The 3.5mm cable coming from my pc is brand new, works in my car, and when I plug in some cheap computer speakers it works just fine.

I'll add some pictures later if they're needed, I'm bumping a week old post, but it seems like I'm just SOL

Do you have the model of said receiver?

Which port are you using?

Been working doubles lately so I haven't had much time on my hands. Will post pictures and model of the receiver tomorrow. I know it's Sony, it might be quite old. You should see the beige speaker wire...

I have four speakers plugged into this, but the problem exists with one pair, the other, or both. On the far left of the back picture you can see the cord coming from my PC.

There probably is something wrong with that port, but I highly doubt that every input is broken.

Try the other inputs, 3.5mm to dual RCA should do the trick:
