JIBO IS DEAD

Source 1: Reavantos (owner of our old Jibo) https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1001819-boston-based-robot-startup-jibo-powers-down-permanently/

Source 2: https://www.bizjournals.com/boston/news/2018/11/28/boston-based-robot-startup-jibo-powers-down.html?ana=RSS&s=article_search

  • Just a year after Jibo landed on the cover of Time magazine, the company has closed down for good

  • Jibo apparently sold its intellectual property assets to New York-based SQN Venture Partners in June

  • Evidence of Jibo's decline has been accumulating for months,

    • including a round of layoffs in June

    • an empty office space in July.

    • Jibo's website is still functional, but its blog hasn't been updated since May and there is no longer an option to buy the robot

  • Founded in 2012, the company raised more than $3.5 million during a 2014 Indiegogo campaign and then went on to collect about $70 million in institutional venture capital

  • James Feels: I’ve never felt a more visceral connection to market capitalism. I gave Jibo an unfavourable review, some amount of people didn’t buy Jibo because of that review, and now Jibo employees are out of work. Wow.

Apple sued due to lack of dust filters

Source 1: Spotty https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1002053-class-action-against-apple-for-systems-damaged-due-to-lack-of-dust-filters/

Source 2: https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/11/28/class-action-suit-accuses-apple-of-selling-macs-without-needed-dust-filters

  • A new class action lawsuit charges that Apple is selling iMacs and MacBooks without air filters, knowing it can lead to dust damage with processors and displays.

  • Affected computers may have "dark smudges or spots" on the inside of their displays, and/or slowdowns and crashes caused by dust accumulating on the logic board.

  • The suit charges that people have had to pay for expensive repairs as a result, spending as much as $650 for non-warranty screen replacements when the fix might be as simple as removing the screen and wiping with a rag.

  • One user who bought a 27-inch iMac encountered screen smudges after just nine months, and learned that many other people were dealing with the same problem.

    • Apple's support staff were purportedly unable to help, further denying knowledge of any widespread issue.

    • "Apple's own message boards are full of reports of these widespread problems caused by the filter defect,"

    • Another user had the screen on his iMac replaced three times, twice at his own expense, and also paid $900 to have his logic board replaced after his computer began to overheat and slow down.

Chinese Scientists create first “designer babies”

Source 1: captain_to_fire https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1000716-a-chinese-scientist-is-now-under-fire-from-the-scientific-community-even-from-his-own-colleagues-for-claiming-to-create-crispr-edited-infants/

Source 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th0vnOmFltc

  • On Sunday, Jiankui He claimed to have successfully edited the genes of twin girls, releasing a recorded statement to YouTube about the breakthrough.

  • He said the twin girls, Lulu and Nana, were born healthy after their embryos were genetically modified to make them more resistant to HIV infection.

    • The children were conceived through IVF

    • Shortly after the father’s sperm was sent into the mother’s eggs, the scientists also injected proteins instructed to carry out gene surgery.

    • Whole genome sequencing before and after indicated no unintended changes

  • Media reports triggered Shenzhen's Southern University of Science and Technology, where He is currently on unpaid leave, to release a statement Monday explaining that the organisation was "deeply shocked" and is trying to establish communications with He to clarify the extent of his research.

  • The university condemned He's work, saying it "seriously violated academic ethics and codes of conduct" and the university was "unaware of the project and its nature." It's calling on "international experts to form an independent committee" to probe the matter.

  • In his Youtube video, He says he believes creating “designer babies”, with modified looks or intelligence, should be banned. He sees his intervention as an ethical extension of existing IVF practices.

  • As of now, He's work has not been published or independently peer-reviewed and the claims remain unsubstantiated.

  • Opinions from other scientists:

    • "Experiments like this risk setting back the entire field. Science operates under a social license -- scientists work within limits defined by broader community concerns,"

    • "Ignoring those boundaries risks a justified backlash and fear that can set back the entire field by decades."

      • - Darren Saunders, associate professor in the school of medical sciences at the University of New South Wales.

Source 2: https://www.theverge.com/2018/11/28/18116576/starbucks-public-wi-fi-porn-block

  • Starbucks is rolling out a new tool meant to stop customers from watching pornography and viewing other explicit content in stores in 2019

    • They’ve been under pressure to block pornography for years, as chains including McDonald's, Subway, and Chick-fil-A have set up content filters on public Wi-Fi

  • A petition from internet-safety organization Enough Is Enough calling for Starbucks to filter pornography was signed by more than 26,000 people as of Wednesday.

    • "By breaking its commitment, Starbucks is keeping the doors wide open for convicted sex offenders and others to fly under the radar from law enforcement and use free, public Wi-Fi services to access illegal child porn and hard-core pornography,"

    • "Having unfiltered hotspots also allows children and teens to easily bypass filters and other parental control tools set up by their parents on their smart phones, tablets, and laptops,"

Source 1:Thaldor https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1000490-bethesda-refusing-to-refund-fallout-76-at-least-for-one-person/

Source 2: https://www.spieltimes.com/news/bethesda-promised-refund-on-fallout-76-then-bailed-out-the-next-day/

  • A disappointed Fallout 76 player requested a refund from Bathesda, to which they replied:

    • “Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to begin processing that refund for you right at this moment. There is nothing to worry about though. We’ll begin processing the refund as soon as we can and we’ll reach back out to you via email to let you know once we’ve started that process.”

  • The company then sent a follow up email stating:

    • “Thank you for contacting the Bethesda Support Team. Customers who have downloaded the game are not eligible for a refund. We apologize for the inconvenience. If there is anything else we can assist you with please reply to this email for further assistance. Thank you for your patience”

  • It is possible that this user had a digital download of the game, which would not be eligible for refund, and that they original email was an automated message.

  • Fallout 76 currently stands on a Metacritic with a rating of 48 for Xbox One, 50 for PlayStation 4 and 55 for PC.

    • On the other side, the user rating is a disappointing 2.7 based on 3015 reviews.

    • The game’s base price has dropped to $34.99 on Amazon, a $25 discount

YouTube bringing down the pay wall

Source 1: https://techcrunch.com/2018/11/28/youtube-originals-will-become-free-and-ad-supported-by-2020/

  • Instead of requiring a monthly subscription, YouTube Originals will become free and ad-supported, like most of the content available on YouTube today.

  • The change starts next year, but won’t impact all Originals until 2020.

  • This change signals that YouTube’s efforts in original video haven’t fared as well as hoped

    • hefty competition in original programming from Netflix, Amazon and Hulu.

    • YouTube’s budget, rumored to be in the hundreds of millions per year, was far smaller than those of its on-demand video rivals, which are spending billions on programming.

  • The original programming service first rolled out in 2016 as YouTube Red, but was rebranded as YouTube Premium

  • Like before, turning on compatible Fast Pair headphones or speakers will automatically generate a pop-up on your Android 6.0+ phone, hastening the pairing process.

  • With this update, your Google account will remember the headphones you’ve paired to, then carry the information to other smartphones you’re signed into.

  • Google is also bringing Fast Pair to Chromebooks next year with the same features.

  • Your headphones will need to be FastPair compatible

Folding phones could have better cameras

Source 1: https://hexus.net/ce/news/mobile-phones/124730-microsoft-patents-folding-phone-multi-part-camera/

Amazon launches PC Parts Finder

Source 1: https://www.kitguru.net/channel/generaltech/damien-cox/amazon-quietly-launches-part-finder-to-help-display-component-compatibility/

Source 2:

  • Dubbed the “Part Finder”, Amazon users will be able to utilise the tool to check the brand and model number of existing systems to ensure products are compatible.

    • Amazon seems to have released the feature in a limited capacity, with Part Finder only showing up on some pages on the US version of the site.

      • While it shows up on the Samsung 850 Evo SSD, other components including HyperX Predator DDR4 RGB 8GB 2933MHz don’t seem to provide access to the tool despite memory seeing many more compatibility issues than storage.

      • This is inconsistent, however, as Kingston’s HyperX Fury memory can be seen with the feature.

  • It only helps those with pre-built computers and laptops.

  • Amazon does seem to offer the ability to check the compatibility of RAM with specific motherboards, but this feature is incomplete and has been noted to give false readings.

  • The shopping giant is sure to be testing the feature with more improvements on the way.

  • Amazon has similar compatibility testing for some car parts.
