I got the wrong motherboard.. Should I return it?

Hi everyone, first time poster here so sorry if the formatting is sub-par. 

 

I accidentally purchased a MSI B350m Mortar off of Newegg instead of the B450m I wanted. Rookie mistake I know lol.

 

I bought the B350m for $83.98 ($73.98 after the MIR), and it costs about $23 to me after the shipping and restocking fee back. So my main question is if it's even worth returning the B350m at this point to get the B450m if I'm paying $23 to return it, and then another $40 to get the one I actually wanted. The build I'm making is my first personal PC build, and I'd like to experiment with overclocking, as well as have this PC for a decent amount of time and upgrade as I go. Yes it's worth returning, because MSI B350 and X370 boards suck

83.98 - 23 = 60.98 that you get back for the return. Then you buy your new motherboard for ~40 dollars. 60.98 - ~40 ~= 20.98. It's ~20.98 less expensive to return your motherboard and buy the one you meant to buy.

Also that b350 might not post/boot without a BIOS update first either. Plus as above said, the 350/370 boards from MSI have been known to have multiple problems. So I'd get the 450 for sure.

I opened the Newegg package and the box says "AMD RYZEN™ DESKTOP 2000 READY" nice marketing, MSI....

If it says it's ready for the 2000 series then I guess they must have updated the BIOS on those boards then, and it should be fine.

I would still send it back personally and take the $20 hit for restocking fee, to get the board you actually want and doesn't suck for VRMs and other issues.

when I referred to OP's board, it shipped to my house and I think the "ryzen ready" shit literally means it fits i the am4 socket. I'm not gonna try making it POST or anything though since I need to send the board back to newegg.

No, it definitely means it's ready for the 2000 series CPUs. But yeah send it back.... and IIRC you shouldn't need to pay a restocking fee as long as you haven't opened it... unless you don't have distance selling regs in your country, which is basically the right to change your mind about a purchase as long as you haven't used it/broken seals etc.

OP will probably figure out a way to get some or all of the money back. I'll make sure he sees your post^. After all, its his board, I'm just holding it until we build his pc

I'd return it. Buildzoid from AHOC did a very comprehensive overview about B350 mainboards and he didn't have to say a lot of positive things about the ones by MSI. I don't know if their B450 boards are any better though.

Alright. Like I said, I didn't know. Never properly looked into B450 after deciding that upgrading to a Ryzen wasn't worth it.

So since the motherboard is still in its conductive wrap, sealed the OP should be able to change his mind?

Guys - OP cant send it back imho - he used the rebate.  He has cut off the UPC.  Im not sure he CAN return it now.

Hm???? I don't think he used it. Unless he printed out the rebate, he has no way of using it since his board was shipped to me

Ahhh I read quickly through and didn't correlate you had it.  If that is the case and the UPC is still on the motherboard box it shipped in then nevermind.  His original post however is indicative of that rebate being through already

Yup, you are right about the rebate thing. I would have thought the same thing. I'll be shipping it back and everything.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Even though the extra $40 won't be too nice to my wallet right now, it sounds like I'll get a lot of value in the long run.
