ReactOS is a free reverse engineered windows clone, PC-BSD is very stable & so are most in the Wikipedia link

What did you use?

I usually use Fedora's media writer tool. Used Rufus before but I had too many bad Image writes with it.

Tried RUFUS in Windows & the Ubuntu build in disc writer.

From my limited understanding, OpenBSD, FreeBSD etc. are mainly for running server equipment, very secure but not great for most users. They don't technically have a GUI from my understanding so they probably won't suit your needs.

 

Sounds like you're in a real quandary there... Surely there is some Linux/Unix distro that your mobo doesn't hate? Oh wait, never mind you mentioned it was an issue with the Linux Kernel...

Taking 14.04 and upgrade to 16.04 works but then there is the driver issues... :c

What exactly is the problem with the drivers? Are you using Nvidia's drivers or, the "Free" Nvidia driver? (Free as in Open Source)

Yeah ok, I'm having display driver issues at the moment with an Ubuntu install but I'm just new to Linux so it's probably just something I'll have to learn. So I guess it's motherboard driver issues? That's rough.

Yeah I cannot find a working AMD driver for my Vega 56 on 14.04 and 16.04 just refuses I tried every tutorial ever made... V3V

AMD ones, it register as wrong GPU and will not let me install any pro drivers... ((funny enough a APU driver kinda worked but crashed randomly under load))

Well, AMD is pretty good with their Linux drivers but, I think they might have a different version as well.

Maybe just try uninstalling the Display driver and see if it works with the basic one?

From what I understand, AMD drivers on Linux are a pain... I'm running an R9 280, having drivers issues as well... Still persisting though, Linux is popular for a reason, it's just not the drivers I guess.

Well damn, I don't know anyone who is a Linux savvy so, maybe ask around on Level1Tech forum.

 

They are kind of Linux focused.

To be honest, I don't know either. I just figured out my display driver issue, I restarted and rolled back from xxxx.39 to xxxx.20. Zero issues right off the bat, so there's some issues with AMD drivers on the latest version of Ubuntu or of the kernel or something.

I've only posted two times on Level1Tech and people were nice but, Linux isn't all that newbie friendly.

Most people miss to tell you the basics because they assume its common knowledge.

 

I used UHU-Linux when I was a little kid (6) because our first PC came with that installed. But, all I remember is that it had an owl as a logo. lol

If you think moving to a more obscure OS will fix your driver problems, you are sorely mistaken. Let alone the fact that some of the stuff on your list simply won't work on anything that isn't windows, macos or linux - specifically steam and discord.

That's the wrong forum, the popularity and (relative) ease of use of Ubuntu mean that a lot of people on the Ubuntu forums don't really know what they're talking about. r/linuxquestions and level1techs.com are better resources IMO.

Yeah, I've found this community to be excellent, a lot of friendly and helpful users on here, not just regarding Linux but other topics too.

You could try an Android distro like PhoenixOS, it could have an old linux kernel version you don't have any issues with. Requires an intel GPU to perform the best.
Can't think anything else than TrueOS (FreeBSD based with desktop)
