Fortnite wasting RAM and Lagging really badly

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

I played Fortnite with my friends last night, and I had realized that I had an FPS drop. I was on 30 fps and it went down to 1 fps. I checked my task manager and saw that Fortnite was taking up 2gb of my RAM, 100 Percent of my CPU, and 98% of my Graphics Card. I closed some tabs on Task Manager and it still lagged really badly. I have one 8 GB of ddr4 Crucial Ballistix Sport LT and it has been working fine, until now. Also, my chrome started to Lag when Fortnite was open.  Is there a solution to stop Fortnite from lagging and taking up a lot of RAM?

Some more specifics on your CPU and GPU would help, but it sounds like your CPU and GPU are being used to the max. The only way for you to get a better experience is to upgrade those componets. As for the RAM, Fortnite is not wasting the RAM, it needs all that RAM to keep your game loaded. HDD and SSDs are much slower than RAM and then RAM is lower than your CPU cache. When you open a program it gets loaded from your slow HDD/SSD to your faster RAM where its then transfered to the CPU as the CPU processes tasks. For example when you shoot in fornite the sound is already loaded onto the RAM, so the RAM just needs to send it to the CPU to process which happens a lot quicker than it would if it loaded straight from the HDD to the CPU.

I have 8GB of RAM and Fortnite was running well, until it started lagging and taking up Heaps of RAM.

Windows 10 can take 2-4GB of RAM, Fornite is going to need at least 2GB and other tasks and programs like google chrome can eat up everything else avaliable to you. If you max out your RAM, your computer will start to page file which means your HDD or SSD starts to act like RAM slowing things down.

This is the third post I've seen today about fortnite taking up unexpected amounts of ram. Was there an update?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

With those computer specs, theres gotta be something else going on with your CPU and GPU. I would try downloading a program like HWMonitor to see if your thermals are good or not as you play. I could understand you running out of RAM, but the 100% usage on the CPU and GPU is not making much sense for something like fortnite.

I felt my GPU and it is really hot, also my stock cooler is overheating.

What are your temps?
