Is the plastic yellowed or is that the original color?  If it is yellowed The 8 Bit Guy has some goo tutorials on de-yellowing

That's more the original color than not, though I do have a 1977 (or there abouts) Falcon, and it definitely shows its age a bit. The color could also be from the yellow light bulb in my office/ workshop. All my pics are taken at night.

I vote for the 1070.  It's the fastest hunk of "junk" in the galaxy, after all.

That is hilarious advice, and very on point. I don't need the best ship ever, just the best junker, ha ha!

I've got a head cold and work is being awful so only a quick update today:

I went for the 1070. I got it at B&H for like $314. That's including a $20 rebate that I have to send in, but I also got a couple game codes... which maybe I'll use? I dunno, it wasn't part of my decision process.

The good/weird news part of the story is that I had ordered a placeholder GPU (a GT 710 or something) from them on Black Friday in the hopes that I could test my system with it and it would be "fine" until I decided to get a 2070 or not. The thing has yet to arrive. So, I called them and they added its price to my order as a credit, meaning that overall I kinda got the 1070 for $270 or something (if you take into account that I was going to just eat the 37 bucks it cost me for the 710). The craziest part is that the 1070 is now expected to arrive before the delayed 710 was.

Anyway, if the GPU delivery saga continues, I'll let you all know. Otherwise we're back on target, boys!

Sooo, the 1070 arrived before 10AM today. HOW was it SO many days faster than the 710?! Do GPUs have some sort of Toy Story-esque secret society that involves a caste system?

So, no pictures tonight BUT: I just finished my test bench. This was my first attempt at even partially building a PC and OH MAN that is a tense hour or so! Long story short, I got my single beep from the BIOS. That was exhilarating. The evening's highlights:

1) I dropped the m.2 drive's mounting screw on the carpet and it took 20 minutes to find the damn thing.

2) I don't know how to short the power button connectors to boot the PC so I installed the power and reset buttons, but got them mixed up, so there was a tense minute of me resetting a PC that was off and wondering why nothing was happening. Checked all my power cables, powered down the power strip, etc. THEN realized I'd installed them in opposite positions.

3) EVERYTHING felt like I was gonna break it by the time I had enough pressure to connect 2 things (I'm fairly careful, so adding pressure when I know things are "delicate electronics" is counter-intuitive)

4) I forgot that I needed to plug a keyboard into the PC to boot to the BIOS, so the first boot was kinda anticlimactic.

Anyway, that's my story. As for other details, feel free to ask me... and yes I did wear an anti-static wristband AND still touch grounded metal things like it was a compulsion. Sensitive electronics are nothing compared to the overwhelming sense of dread that you're gonna break something just by existing near it.

I'm sure many would go bananas if that was for real. :D

Anyways it a great build man. Hats off to you sir for doing something this difficult as your first build. :)

Hey all! So... Christmas was a thing that happened. LOT of family over here for my kid's second Xmas ever, and first in our own place (we were with family last year). Anyway, the holidays were a wrecking ball that slammed right into my productivity on this and any other "free time" tasks. But I finally got a couple of hours to work on the Falcon again this weekend! Today and yesterday, I focused on the endoskeleton that will eventually support the internal parts. The one bummer in that process so far has been that, even though my 3D rendering program showed that the holes in my beams and brackets lined up, they didn't. So the drill came out of hiding and I went about modifying the beams a bit:

20190105_143607.thumb.jpg.20a9d1d44be3159f962129535193fd6e.jpg

Here's what I ended up with ( be warned, it could have gone better):

20190105_143622.thumb.jpg.28ac9be6d8cf32765a357b8a6fd99b43.jpg

A little bit of filing and sanding, and cutting a couple of the longer screws I ordered (which actually WAS part of the plan), and I got this guy assembled:

20190105_154022.thumb.jpg.7299659ef1dbe52e9acc7ae535d957b8.jpg

So far, this is the back two landing gear, which will act as supports for the GPU, and then a T junction to the support beam for the acrylic MOBO tray that will live atop that flat plate you can see on the right of the pic above. Here's a pic or two for visual context of where it goes:

20190105_154059.thumb.jpg.95a19f68314c99017e89e6b537c8b4ae.jpg

20190105_154121.thumb.jpg.459de1cf78a0f3ae8c9e5be494567c8a.jpg

In part, this is still a mock-up of the final skeleton. I have a few screws to cut to length still and I'll be swapping a few of the regular nuts for locking ones in the final version. That said, this is the actual build concept for these parts and it's all in the right dimensions and angles. Now that I've got this stuff together I can better tell where I need to cut in order to fit these legs where the original plastic landing gear were. Once that stuff is cut, I'll move on to crafting my "rear" I/O panel and some of the grates for the fans. There's a long way to go on this thing, but starting up again in the new year feels good!

PS: If any of you are worried about structural choices I'm making (especially since I'm planning on wall-mounting this puppy), please share them with me. I'm no structural engineer or anything, so as long as the criticism is constructive I promise not to get uppity with you!

Ha, I see what you mean. If the supports were rotated 90 degrees, it'd be even more so. As it stands, I'm happy to claim the creation of a Star Wars nesting ship design! Sadly, the frame is gonna look less like an x-wing again when I add to it.

Hey again all! I got some more time to work on the Falcon today, so I thought I'd share my progress. With the help of a new coping saw, my keyhole saw, and my dremel, I removed the old landing gear struts and replaced them with the aluminum frame. It's not all perfect, but I do like the result.

Ok guys, it's update time again BUT THIS TIME THERE'S A TWIST! This time I need some help and advice. I need to know what you'd suggest I use to bond or affix metal mesh to the plastic of the toy. Actually, let me back up a sec and tell you what's going on.

I made a new vent. It's in what might be a controversial place for fans of the Millennium Falcon. So before you scroll down and berate me, be forewarned: I needed to do this. My GPU is going to be mounted with its fan facing down toward the landing gear of the ship. Where the fan is going to have to go, there is no vent, just a pocket of plastic where the ship's smuggling compartment would be. So uh... I added a vent.

20190117_222715.thumb.jpg.6eef99f4cccd6224ac6a98eef5f82b18.jpg

20190117_222726.thumb.jpg.b87dad19dd8a644cf660cae1188622fc.jpg

20190117_222749.thumb.jpg.0019c09202903823146db286880102af.jpg

So, back to the question at hand: how would you suggest I permanently affix that mesh? My thought was that caulking fluid would do the trick, but maybe I should use super glue? There's also the prospect of lots of tiny screws, nuts, and washers. I just think that if I can avoid that, the outside of the ship will look a bit better.

Ok, let me have it. How awful does that cutout look? I did my best, but the fan in me is still a bit taken aback at the tinkerer in me.

A good epoxy glue should bond well with the plastic essentially making the mesh part of the structure.

even hot glue should hold it in place, a few dots around the bezel should suffice. Otherwise some two component glue might be another option

Some kind of two part epoxy would be ideal I think, although total weight hanging off it would be interesting to know, it all adds up.

As for the vent, it's on the underside of the Falcon right? So it'll be against the wall? I don't see an issue, it's like my Dreamcast build; I've been trying hard to keep all the venting to the rear, and underside of the console, to maintain the illusion. To be honest, I'd probably cut ventilation holes in other places that wouldn't be obvious. You even more so than me, will suffer from hot air 'pockets' inside that case...

I guess it makes sense to... smuggle the air through there :P

But yeah, any epoxy or hot glue would do fine.

I love it. Kinda makes me feel better about desecrating the ship the way I did. At least it'll be kinda hidden as that side of the ship won't be in view very often.

And thanks for confirming about the epoxy. I was worried about heart tolerances, but since it'll be an intake, I guess that's silly of me.

Just make sure it's a thermo-setting epoxy. Hot glue has a tendency to get a bit tacky when it heats up even after it's applied and "set"
