The Kessel Run - a Star Wars near-scratch build

Hi all. I'm committing to an idea that I've had for a long long time: building a gaming PC inside a vintage Millennium Falcon toy. I'm calling the project "The Kessel Run" for very nerdy reasons:

Spoiler

The Kessel Run in Star Wars refers to a smuggling route Han Solo, and others, used to avoid the Empire. To complete the run quickly, you had to get as close to the gravity well of a black hole as possible. I'm using that as a metaphor for this build because this is not the first time a person has built a PC in a Millennium Falcon toy. This is just my "run" at it. As with those other builds that came before, I will try and push this build as far as I can. Will it be the best run at this project ever? I dunno, maybe not. The point is to push my own skill set and that of the small internal space in the toy as far as I can. With that in mind, here's the build!

Kessel Run Beginning

Here's the toy as it arrived at my place (note: that's the guy who I got it from, not me if you were interested). It's not mint and it's not the original 1977 model... all good things considering what I'm gonna do to this sucker's vintage toy status. The plan is to not only fit a computer in it, but to wall mount it on a flying mount like those used for TVs. For that reason, I'm going to be building a metal skeleton into the toy first, then using that skeleton to mount the PC to. That way, 30ish year old plastic isn't responsible for the safety of hundreds of dollars of tech.

Of course, before I can even start adding a skeleton to the interior of this thing, I have to make as much room inside it as possible. Let's open her up:Opened UpOpened Up Side View

The interior space is pretty ok, but considering that I'm fitting square pegs in a round hole here, mini ITX is gonna have to be the way to go. Height is about 4.25" (108mm) at the center, and about half that at the edges of the disc area. Time to do some preliminary Dremel work!

First Round of Dremeling - Bottom

First Round of Dremeling - Top

Oh yeah. Now it's practically roomy in there. Room for like, all the computers. I know this is a pretty cursory beginning to the build log, but I wanted to show off the concept. Let me know what aspect of the build you'd like to hear about next and I'll oblige. I'm pretty stoked about my concept for the metal skeleton though. I might cover that soonish.

Yes I purposefully chose a star trek related gif over a star wars one *mwaha*

Looks like a super interesting build!! Definitely following, layout will be even more important than in mine I suspect... At least you have enough space to put all the parts flat in theory. I'm having to stack. And it looks like you have good enough vertical space for them to breathe too

Nice. I'm an equal opportunity nerd, so I love me some Mr. Takei no matter what the context.

Yeah, it's looking that way. I'm working with cardboard mock-ups right now, which I think will be my next update here. So far so good on space, though (you know... ish). I'll be interested as to how you end up stacking stuff, too. Are you planning on fabricating or "bodging" up and of your own framework in that case of yours?

Ok all, today I'm gonna share the main parts list that I've worked out for the build, along with some pictures of where I think everything can fit. Here's the breakdown of components:

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600

Motherboard: ASRock B450 GAMING Mini ITX - AM4

RAM: Team Vulcan 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 3000

Storage: Western Digital Blue 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9a (AM4 variant - I'll also be swapping the thin fan on this out for a 25mm one, since I think that's just about the "beefiest" cooling I can fit into the case)

Power Supply: FSP Group 500 W 80+ Gold Certified Flex ATX Power Supply

GPU: TBD. I am fine with opting for the MSI GTX 1070 mini ITX, but with the same company (and Gigabyte) rumored to be coming out with mini ITX 2070s soon, I think I'll wait for a good price/benchmarks to come out.

Anyway, here are the pics of how I see things being arranged!

20180910_140954.thumb.jpg.5e2b0ff6335ed9b1f324815a85bc9af7.jpg

Here's what's what: The Motherboard and cooler are (more obviously than anything else) the top middle box and plate underneath. To the right of that, right by the cockpit, is the Flex ATX PSU, and at the bottom of the image is the GPU, with its fan facing down. I'm gonna have to add a vent for that to pull air through the bottom of the case, but it'll be facing the wall, so it should be fine aesthetically. here's another angle:

20180910_141026.thumb.jpg.b075c59bc6dbffe6da0afe3302e10232.jpg

And here's a view with the top of the case on. I removed the PSU from this pic because i still need to go back in with the Dremel and unceremoniously escort that support pillar out of the ship. It's tight, but I think we'll manage!

20180910_140915.thumb.jpg.73880b6889cc85db7655f86ffcdbec3c.jpg

Anyway, that's the update for today all. Have a good one!

I mean, I've got no choice but to stack in my space...

But because the motherboard is face down, and the graphics is face up, I'm probably going to make some extra long stand-offs for the motherboard, and just rest the graphics on top of it. It'll be attached at the rear io, so not floating around. But I'm like maybe, sheet of plastic or card to stop them shorting and...that may be it xD

Yeah, I'd think maybe acrylic or something would be a good bet. That said, be sure to use something that has the right thermal properties. I know some acylics tend to start weakening at 85 or 90C. I don't think they'd melt, but just make sure you do your homework :D

Yeah, that's a good shout  xD I'll have to see how pressed I am for space.

The idea is to have an acrylic piece that not only stops them touching, but also as a floor/ceiling to seperate the case into two cooling zones.

Just a quick update to show off the parts that have been delivered! Look at that teeny little (extremely heavy) PSU! It's so adorable! Also, to answer one of the questions that may arise from this picture: yes, yes I am hiding the ketchup and mustard PSU cables. My googling skills, and some very helpful confirmation on these forums, told me that I had exactly this option for the form factor and power requirements. So, yeah. It's teeny, but not the pertiest heifer in the barn.

So darn true. I have a plan for the skeleton, but I'm still waiting on the parts to arrive before cut the ship much more. Not a lot of room to mess up in that regard!

Ok, so today I have what i think is my favorite update to this build log. Today I got a package that allows me to show you guys how I'm building the framework of this computer! So here goes:

What I need to do, since I want to wall mount the Millennium Falcon is to create an internal skeleton for the ship. The skeleton needs to be lightweight and strong, and since my tools are all of the drill/saw/Dremel sort, I can't really go full bore on fabricating something. For a long time I scoured places like Ebay trying to find some sort of "adult erector set." What I ultimately ended up finding was that the best erector set kits are built for robotics contests these days. Structural robotics parts are often solid aluminum, and you can order exactly what you need, rather than a kit. Sooo helpful!

I'm of the opinion that these things are so dang good for PC builders that you can pretty much make anything you want into a PC case, for basically the same money any decent case will run you (depending on the cost of the object you want to convert, that is). Anyway, I checked through a lot of the major robotics competition players, and the most affordable one was Servocity. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Here's my plan for what the internals of the Falcon will look like:

1450546315_AngleView.jpg.dfb98434a0de07de8c374ce434d2a11f.jpg

Everything in purple is aluminum framing. The white is fixtures, and lime green is either acrylic for the motherboard tray or a piece I need to fabricate. The yellow is my RAM. The blue is a Cryorig c7, which by now I've swapped out for the Noctua L9-a. I didn't find a 3D image file for that one though, so I left the Cryorig as a placeholder. Grey is obviously the motherboard, and the red is a downward-facing ITX GPU. The specific one I've used is the Gigabyte GTX 1080 ITX, which I was planning on using before it became unavailable/ridiculously expensive. I'm currently either gonna use a 1070 or one of the MSI/Gigabyte ITX 2070s that are supposed to come out within a month. Here are some other angles:

2084089124_TopView.jpg.aa9ca26340a6cd1e3fba800f247d5392.jpg1035599262_SideView.jpg.928c539b11c6fd3138602cb4e6df06bf.jpg

So in the side view, you can see orange. That's a 90 degree 16x PCIE riser card that allows the GPU to exist in this configuration, with its fan facing down. The turquoise you see is the heat sink of the GPU. I highlighted it because I needed to remember that that sucker is supposed to heat up to 90C, which is above the temperature Acrylic begins to weaken at, making an acrylic backplate (for structural purposes) a bad call.

135884892_BackView.jpg.eeab24cb4b66ce594c5448a705d7ad7f.jpg

Here's the rear view. The three legs will be the same height and should be attached to a single support that reinforces their "feet" at the bottom. That support will then be affixed to an articulating arm, of the kind that you use to wall mount a TV.

Now that you see the structure, here's the package that showed up today, complete with all the parts I ordered from Servocity. PS - I never name drop like that, but I'm pretty stoked about the possibility of using robotics parts for lightweight, customized PC cases.

20181201_144011.thumb.jpg.c7badf933338957998f59ce33662f320.jpg

Stoked.

20181201_144332.thumb.jpg.021ef92ebcbd1757c0a2a20211b5edaa.jpg

Parts! Also: they gave me candy for ordering on Cyber Monday. I mean, I bought on Cyber Monday because it saved me like 20% on these, but uh, I'm not against candy. AT ALL. Here's a closeup on the parts:

20181201_144802.thumb.jpg.187c445f657e5e3c9043a59100008929.jpg

I'm hoping to build a prototype of the frame, without any of the cutting I know I'll need to do, in order to get the shape right and then mark up the falcon itself so that I can fashion its new landing gear/skeleton/cable routing solution. As I said above, I'm excited. The Dremel gets to come out and play again!

I've got another update! Today's topic: Fans!

I'm gonna be very up front and say that I kinda splurged here. I went full Noctua. The haul:

1x NH-L9a-AM4

1x 92mm NF-A9 PWM (this will be taking the place of the thin fan that comes with the CPU cooler)

2x NF-A6x25 60x25mm PWM fans (one intake, one exhaust)

Fans1.thumb.jpg.0ed63340d0523fd9dbc9672df9ba44b7.jpg

Oh God. The brown. It's everywhere!

Actually I think these might look really nice with the Falcon when all is said and done. Better than black IMO at least. They have that "vintage toy" feel.

202112866_60mmfan.thumb.jpg.ad537cdd0b3aa1c91f36d160049342ec.jpg

I figured not everyone gets to see these 60mm guys in their packaging, so here you go!

Now let's look at where these are going!

20181205_200520.thumb.jpg.b8f702502793049e577a8ad1c64317bf.jpg

Here's the intake. As you can see, I've dremeled out a hole for it in one of the... I was gonna say docking ports, but the ramp extends down from the one of these on the other side. It's still a docking port right? Dammit, I'm the John Snow of Millennium Falcon nuance! I know nothing!

20181205_200418.thumb.jpg.0d65e90f46dc035f31476d888a242557.jpg

Here's the exhaust. I'm gonna remove a lot of the cockpit stuff and replace the plastic window with a metal mesh screen. We might end up with a bit of a Steampunk/Greasepunk Falcon... but I'm ok with that. Oh, and yeah I'm gonna take the Dremel to those corners in order to make the fan fit in there correctly. Kiiinda nervy about cutting into a brand new Noctua, but if the surgery works then theoretically I won't have to replace this guy for a good while.

20181205_200528.thumb.jpg.cd0584f9a81030e1c62aa7cd1fbeeb56.jpg

Here are the holes for the bigger fans. The gun turret has been removed for the CPU cooler and the fake vent stickers are gonna be real vents now. All will be covered in metal mesh, and the little vents, at least 4 of them, will be positioned in front of the 15mm fan that came with the CPU cooler.

Also, I might just expand the hole that the gun turret used to occupy. It would give me better airflow, but i don't know if it messes with the aesthetic of the Falcon too much. What do you guys think? I could also look into fabricating a new mount for the gun turret and put it back on, but that might restrict airflow further. I'm open to ideas on that too.

The fan placement in the pods on both sides is a great idea! and if it'll be on a wall, you won't see them and they're perfectly oriented for intake at the bottom, exhaust at the top. Brilliant! With regard to the top fan, what I would do is actually cut to the edge of the larger circle, mesh that whole area... Then spray the mesh to match the rest of the body, and simply stick the turret back on xD

Is the engine area at the rear going to be cut out and used as an actual exhaust? Such a large area would be great, and a blue led strip inside would be pretty badass. In fact, even if you don't put fans there, you better make it light up ;)

It looks like you'll have plenty of fans to move air, my concern would be that in such a strangely shaped case, trying to get a good flow through it would be tricky. A downward blowing CPU cooler is essential due to space otherwise I'd suggest a sideways oriented one, and have a bottom to top airflow. As it is, it may be slightly turbulent. Still, it'll probably be cooler than my Dreamcast, you have more fans, and far more internal space too.

I have that same instinct. I want to see how central i can get the fan under that while squeezing the PSU into the case, but if it's close to good looking then I think that's a great idea. Also what kind of mesh do you think would allow for airflow but not let big particulates (at least) into the case? I have a couple types here but they all have sizable holes.. great for air AND dust to get into the case!

Ok, all. I need help with a decision:

The GTX 1070 ITX GPU from MSI is on sale right now for $314. The GPU is the only part I've been holding off on for this rig. I was going to hold out for the new 2070 minis coming out from MSI and Gigabyte, but they're gonna run me likely $550 or so. Should I just snap up a 1070? The power consumption of a 2070 mini is gonna be 175w as opposed to the 150 of the 1070s, and I'm unsure about either Ray Tracing or the heat the new cards are gonna give off, especially given my plastic case.

Thoughts? I'm seriously unsure what to do.

What are your thoughts on a 1070 running Cyberpunk 2077? I think that's the only upcoming title I'm excited for in a real way. But i also have yet to play Witcher 3 and a few other good titles that came out "recently". Still... I want to play that game.

My monitor is a 75Hz 1080 panel though, so I'm not too mad about fps, just textures looking cool.

Mesh wise, I think it might be better to go with something that'd allow good airflow, and maybe put a filter behind it? Potentially make the turret/mesh be detachable from the outside for ease. MAGNETS! xD

Recommended is a 1070

Witcher specs are low so don't worry about that

Mesh wise, I think it might be better to go with something that'd allow good airflow, and maybe put a filter behind it? Potentially make the turret/mesh be detachable from the outside for ease. MAGNETS! xD

That might be ambitious for me. Without the magnets part it might be good though. Having the magnetic lift-off-able (that's absolutely a word) part would worry me in a couple ways. 1) can I make that look good enough? and 2) would the magnets mess with the RAM, being that at least one fairly strong magnet would have to be right up against their heat spreaders.

I've no idea about either outcome, so maybe implementing 80 percent of the plan is the best call for my skill set/knowledge level.

Great information. Is it still the Falon if it's not the fastest ship in the galaxy? Do I care, being that I'd save like 200 bucks and definitely adhere to my 500w PSU's capabilities, rather than trying to see if a GPU that asks for a 550w would be ok? I don't even know if the PSU can supply the right voltage along the 12v rail to handle a 2070 that draws 175 watts.

Is this sort of indecision normal or am I having a case of the first-timer wishy-washies (also a decidedly a word)?

Its normal, I still think you should stick to 1070 and maybe in a year see about upgrading to a 2070
