Can you touch type?

I read across the comments and I still don't know what "touch type" is supposed to mean, don't you have to touch the keys in order to type? what am I missing here?

Be able to type without having to look at the keyboard while maintaining retaining reasonable accuracy

100% I touchtype but with games like world of warcraft or any mmo's with tons of binds I think it draws me back because I'm used to have my hand on the lower zone to use my pinky on control shit and capslock ,(sometimes I hit control with the bone that is in the palm but belongs to pinky)  so its like if you wanna do fast control shift binds , how to use F1,F2.... like another key? , I have big hands but so many years gaming and never use function keys properly, (and now with my k95 they seem far away).

I can, but only on my laptop. I just bought a couple new keyboards on Amazon to try out, but I just really don't like the feel of mechanical keyboards. I have a Microsoft wireless keyboard from about 10 years ago, and I can sort of touch type on, but I keep having to look down to make sure I haven't drifted. But with the laptop, I can close my eyes and write for ages.

I type with all the fingers on my left hand, but only my index finger on my right hand (Except for backspace, that's the middle finger's job)'

I feel like if I spent a couple hours training myself to actually use all my fingers, I'd type faster, but I already type faster than I can think (which isn't too fast tbh) so I'm not really too fussed.

anyway im a wow player too, i dont use ctrl as mod key, i prefer alt.

I mean, it's a pretty important skill, especially in this day and age. I can touch type on my own keyboard between 95 and 105 WPM, which is faster than...well, quite a bit of people my age.

 

But seriously, I'd say it's one of the most important things you should learn in your free time if you don't already know how.

Lol, I'm in grade 10 and there are lots of people in my class that can type 75+ WPM. I'm the fastest, afaik, at around 95 WPM.

Wow. 30WPM is average in my class. At 80 ish I'm far and away the fastest

Touch typing is when you primarily rest the four fingers on your left hand on the ASDF keys (and your index finger is on the F key with the little bump) and the four fingers on your right hand on the JKL; keys (and your index finger is on the J key with the little bump). Certain fingers should be used to hit certain keys. 

 

Here's a picture that shows what keys you should hit with each finger to be considered a "touch typist" (but keep in mind that you can't look at the keyboard when typing):

my old folks wanted to send me on one of those "sheet of paper over the keyboard" typing classes...

 

never did.. type faster than all family members who have done so..

why? well.. because i type in the way that comes most natural to me, not the way that some academic typewriter decided was best in 1846.

I learned how to touch type from those type racer sites, also from my business report tasks long time ago.

It depends on the keyboard though.... I can type up to 110wpm on my keyboard (my fastest, but not average) but 50wpm on my mate's keyboard.

NOPE.

I can't touch type for shit. (Which is typing with all your fingers, some people seems to be not know that here, looking at the comments.)

I can type without looking at the keyboard perfectly fine.

But don't ask me to use more than two or three fingers (indexes+thumb), I lack the motor skills to move all my fingers for typing.
Even so, I type at like 70 words per minute, which isn't that terrible.
