I have an i5-6600K and an Asus Z170-A Motherboard. I have a GTX 970 and a M.2 SSD (configured as eSATA). Can I add another GTX 970? According to this image below I should be able to add a second GTX 970 since the M.2 SSD is using PCIe lanes from the motherboard while the 2 GFX cards will be handled by the CPU. Am I right?

When I set mobo defaults, my mobo (ASUS Z170-A) auto overclocks my Skylake Intel i5 6600k to 4.4 ghz, and the voltage to something automatic. Why is this happening? Why doesnt it run at stock 3.5 ghz? And stock voltage? Why?

Hello everyone, I'm having an issue with my MOBO after BIOS update and I really hope you can help me. I have Asus Z170-A board and today I updated BIOS on the board to the latest from the Asus site, ver. 3401. Before that I had a version from January of last year (don't know actual version). Update went through the EZ update in AI utility from the desktop and the process went as expected. The process went to BIOS as always, progress bar filled up and the message said it's done and the system will restart. The system rebooted but there was no signal on the screen. Pump was working, vents, lights also but that's it, no signal. After manual restart, MemOK light was on and I had to go through that sequence to get to BIOS, where version 3401 was installed nice and proper. Long story long, with or without OC, no matter the RAM frequency or default settings I figured out that the system will boot "normally" only with one RAM stick (the system has 2x8) without regard of the slot or the stick itself. When I say "normally" i mean in relative terms because there is a short "shut down like moment" when I start the computer (after which PC just starts like i pressed the button again) and also, the little line that blips in the top left corner of the screen just before Win 10 logo appears during start is moving around to several positions instead the usual one in the top left corner. I cleared the CMOS, loaded default values in BIOS and still had to go through MemOK sequence during start (both RAM sticks in). The "blip line" is still there.... I'm really pissed off, because I didn't need a BIOS update, and I did it anyway, for being up to date and other stupid things, again . If I forgot anything, ask away. Sorry for the length of the post, BR. Edit: After a shut down and a start just a minute ago, the system went straight to BIOS for no obvious reason. The blip was still there...

Hello! I've recently tried to overclock my processor (again!), an Intel Core I7-6700k. Managed to pull a stable performance at 1.300v @ 4,5Ghz. Although this performance suits my needs, the CPU tends to spike temps sometimes. For example, upon opening My Computer, it will jump at around 52-53 degrees Celsius for 2 seconds, then drop at around 28-29 degrees, then after 10 seconds, coming back to 24-25 degrees, it's normal idle temp. Also, under heavy load, the voltage tends to go higher than specified in the motherboard OC page (instead of maximum 1,300v sometimes jumps to 1,342v!). There are 2 more options for the voltage other than manual, which are Offset Mode and Adaptive Mode. I don't fully understand those options, and also i cannot seem to find the LLC option in my motherboard settings, so i can tinker with it. Any help will be much appreciated! Have a nice day!

Can I install a bios for the asus z170-a board onto a asus z170-ar
Guest posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
So I was watching a few youtube videos on how I could overclock a locked intel cpu by changing its bios. The website that I had found that contains this type of bios does not offer a bios for the asus z170-ar motherboard, which is what I have, but offers it for the asus z170-a motherboard. After doing some research, I had found out that the main between the two boards is that the z170-a board offers an additional vga and dvi-d port. If anyone had ever tried using a z170-a bios on a z170-ar board, has this type of bios for the z170-ar, or has any knowledge about this situation of mine, any help would appreciated.-

Hello everyone, So recently I've been noticing that my cpu red light has been turning on quite frequently, usually while I am in a demanding game such as gta V I checked temps and sometimes they were on the 88ºC +, runned AIDA64 and was getting 16% thermal throttle and so on. I was worrying about it so I did some tests, reduced overclock, changed voltages, etc. Was still getting the red light So I decided to bring back stock settings, add in overclock to 4.1Ghz (previously on 4.3Ghz), and so far the red light hasn't shown but I am not liking the temps Runned AIDA64 for 5 minutes and temps were close to 90ºC (keep in mind that I say this because before I had it on 4.3 and temps were good under load (70-80 under load)) Any idea if there might be a issue that I can fix? Or is there something wrong with the chip \ motherboard? (I have more screenshots of almost everything of 3 or so minutes in the rar file) The last temps are idle info [1280x960].rar

is it ok to pair 2x16gb 3000mhz cl15 with a z170-a from Asus? The CPU supports up to 64gb but the Mb manual says 4x8gb only (compatibility list) and corsair website says that only x99 chipset is supported. oh, and the mb manual also has 8x8gb as an option with only 4 slots on the motherboard so...

Hello everyone, i just got a brand new build - i7 6700k (not overclocked) - Asus Z170-A Motherboard - CoolerMaster Hyper212 Evo - Kingston Hyper Fury 2666 Mhz - EVGA Geforce 970 SSC the First thing i did was a Small FFTs stresstest using Prime95 version 28.5 at idle my Cpu Temp was about 31/33 C but the temps started to spike from 69 to over 84 Celcius while stresstesting after doing some research i found out my CPU VCORE was at 1.300V (default bios settings) so i changed it too 1.200V and noticed my temps went 10C to 20C lower (around 60C to 74C) using Prime95 and at idle my CPU Temp is around 25C to 33C now but i still wasnt satisfied with the Temps on FULL LOAD! i came across a troubleshoot article where someone said i should be using Prime95 version 26 So i tried that, and noticed the CPU Temps decreased to max 62C at Full Load using P95 v.26 - Small FFTs test So now my Questions are.... 1. which of the Prime95 versions are Correct or Better? (why does it have a 10C to 20C difference using the same SMALL FFTs TEST) 2. as soon as i start the Test the cpu temps spike up from 30C -idle- to 55C/59C instead of slowly moving up too 40/50/60C etc using both Versions is this normal with an i7 6700k and if not, how can i fix this? 3. should i lower my CPU VCORE even more to have lower temps ? (im a noob so forgive if i ask Dumb questions) im running at 4.00 Ghz stock (not overclocked) 4. and last, is there anyone who has the same motherboard and cpu who can recommend better Bios settings or Tips on howto set the right settings? cause im totally new with mid/ to highend hardware components and the -over a 100 New- bios options? do i need to adjust some bios settings by default when purchasing an i7 6700k? I really want my Build to be perfectly stable, specially when its not overclocked i hope someone can help me with this.. i thank you all in advance

So, I was changing the NIC and I swapped the GPU down too the PCIEX_16 2nd slot and the network card into the PCI lane above. I did this with the system off, but the power supply still plugged in - I realise this is quite a stupid idea but it was 6am and I wasn't thinking straight. when I wen't to turn the system back on the system wouldn't start the boot or fan cycles etc when pressing the power button on the front io headers. I tried pressing the power button directly from the motherboard but still no sign of life. Of course the only lights working is the standard motherboard lights for standby power. I removed the GPU, hard drives, ssd everything, except the cpu and the motherboard of course. I unplugged the ATX connector and plugged it back in, the systems powers on for about 5-6 seconds then turns back off onto the same standby state. Hardware: CPU: i5-6600K Motherboard: z170-A I should also mention I've tried 3 PSU's that I had laying around. I've also checked the front io pins.

So I havn't build up a new PC since AMD 1090t was released so i'm a bit rusty. Motherboard - Asus Z170-A CUP Cooler - Corsair H100i V2 I've reached the CUP cooler installation ok and i noticed my MB has the normal CUP Fan header & a W_Pump (water pump) header. Which one would be best to use ? Note: the H100i v2 has a 3 pin connector the pump connects to not a 4 pin one, if you need images.....there's google but i'll post if you really want me to THANKS

Hi all, hoping someone here may have an idea about this. I have an ASUS Z170-A with a 6600K and 32 gigs of ram. My SSD is a Samsung 850 Evo 250g. I noticed that sometimes things loaded slow so I ran Magician and my speed at purchase was 540 read, 528 write and now I am lucky to hit 90 read and 50 write. I tried Crystal Mark and it too gave me really bad speeds, I could get better from my 1TB WD Black. I have my older OCX Vertex 3 in my system and it too is running about the same numbers. I have even done a clean install of Windows 10 thinking maybe something glitched in the reg but still getting the same numbers. The only issue I have had was about a month or so ago I came home to find my Corsair H110i V2 pump had died and my system was at the boot screen blinking CPU over heat. The heat coming from the cpu was high, I could feel it coming from my case as I got close. I had it OC'd to 4.4 when this all happened and it would have been no more than 8 hrs like that since it was fine when I left for work. I did see the temp was pegged at 100C but then shut everything down. Could that heat have fried something? I have checked and I am in ACHI mode, both BIOS and Windows confirm that much. I am at a loss as to what the issue is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've just built my first computer last night. Everything was fine until this morning when the cooling fans for the H115i seemed to go into hyper drive out of nowhere and won't slow down. I installed the Corsair Link 4 software but it's fairly useless, I can't change any of the fan speeds in there. I can change profile names and save them but can't change the speeds. I went into the BIOS setup and can see the fan speeds in there as well but the only profiles I see have the fan running at 60% minimum and I can't change that either. I am new to this so maybe I missed something. I haven't done anything with the PC except update drivers so far. The CPU has stayed below 30c the entire time (27c now) and the MB is around the same. A couple of the HDD's are in the mid to high 30's but that's it. The H115i fan speed is wizzing along at 2200rpm and the pump is up there too 1920rpm. The 3 case fans are anywhere from 840rpm to 950rpm. I have the one fan wire from the H115i plugged into the CPU Fan power pin, which is what I believe its's supposed to. Here are my build specs: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM 2x 8GB Case- Corsair 750D Samsung 960 Evo M.2 boot drive 2x Samsung 1TB 950 Evo SSD WD Red 6TB HDD 2x WD Green 2TB HDD i7-6700k Asus Z170-A Corsair H115i Liquid Cooler EVGA 750 G2 Power Supply Other things I've done to try an fix this: Update the BIOS for the MB, install all the suggested drivers from the Intel tool. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks,

I want to build a new gaming and main computer for myself and school just because mine is getting old (about 7-8 years) and figured maybe ill try the forums out to see if the hardware I have lined up will work well together. For Christmas, I got an Intel Core i7 6700K 4.00 GHz and a Z170-A. Now I for sure want to keep the 6700k but did I goof and maybe get a bad board? I have a 1060, H100i, HX800watt corsair power supply, and all the peripherals that I will transfer to the new build. Originally in my build, I was thinking about doing the 6700k, asus z170-a, gtx 1060, h100i, HX800w, CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 32GB, and shoving all of that into a Phanteks ENTHOO EVOLV Tempered Glass case. As for the motherboard I wanted something that has the option for m.2 as well as a good amount of ram and that it can fit the 1151 processor. Any thoughts or issues with this build? Budget for new parts is about $350USD. Thanks

Hi! So, I have a 6700k running on a z170-A with 2x8GB 2400mhz RAM and I really need more RAM (well, and CPU but can't do that atm). I mainly o 3D modeling and Rendering. Here's the thing, my MB only supports up to 3466mhz memory and since I want to upgrade to ryzen 3900x, 3950x or something like that in 1 year or so, I thought I could go for 3600mhz CL16 sticks right now, enable XMP and bring them down to 3200, 3400 or 3466 in the BIOS for my current setup. That way, when I upgrade de CPU I could use the same memory sticks. My question is, would that work or would the system not boot up or something like that because the MB wouldn't recognize the higher frequency RAM? And, do you think that it would make a huge difference in speed going from 2x8GB 2400mhz to 2x16GB 3600mhz? I also heard that if I OC my CPU (it is not OCed atm) I wouldn't benefit from such high RAM speed and capacity with this 6700k. Thank you in advance

Hello. So this morning i woke up and booted my PC all right. Then i switched it off for ~3 hours and when i tried to switch it back on i had no video input. I don't have a dedicated GPU, i run the on board graphics from an Intel Core I7-6700K. It happened to me once already so i thought powering off the PSU would do the trick. I did that but this time, it didn't even boot. The red LED light from the CPU is lighting up for a second then it goes off and the RAM LED is staying on for 5 seconds, then it goes off. I tried removing all the RAM sticks and booting up and the LED stays red to indicate a problem, so i figured it's not the RAM that's the issue. I removed the BIOS battery, tried to clear the CMOS but it still won't boot. I have noticed that one keyboard LED is always on, no matter if the PC is on or off. Is this an issue with my motherboard or am i doing something wrong?

Hey guys, total noob here asking how i can deal with this problem. ive been trying to adjust my computers fan speeds but somehow i cant get the ai suite software to open at all to do it and whats worse is that the newest version i cant install because i get a prompt to restart my computer first but nothing happens. and even when i keep trying to install it won't do anything but prompt me. what gives?

I bought practically a new computer so this may be particularly dificult to solve. I recently acquired a new cpu, gpu, ram and mobo. Intel 6600k, Gtx 1060, corsair vengance lpx ddr4 2400mhz 1x8gb and last but not least a Asus z170-a. The main problem is that when i finished plugging all the cords and components together, the mobo just wouldnt react either to the case´s power button or the mobo power button for it to turn on. All the changes i can see upon pluggin uin the psu to the power outlet, is that a little light on the mobo called PWR_LED turns green, thats it. The psu works fine in the computer im writing this post with so i can fairly discart the psu as the problem. I have already tried "breadboarding" it with only the cpu, cooler, 1 stick of ram (in all the posible slots), and a HDD in the "OS Drive" SATA port. One thing i noticed is that the 6600k supports DDR4-1866/2133, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V and the memory i have is 2400mhz. The motherboard should support it by downclocking the memory, right? When i say that the pc does not boot nor post, i actually mean that after all the right components are plugged in, when i press the power button in either the case or the mobo, absolutely nothing happens. No fans, no beeps from the mobo speaker. Nothing. The difficult part of diagnosing this myself is that all the components are new and most not compatible with my old mobo so i cant test any of them individually. I REALLY hope the mobo is not busted... THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE! *UPDATE* I sent the build to a technician and the first thing he did was check with another psu to see if that was the peoblem. It wasnt, with neither psu did the pc boor neither post. He will diagnose further and get the results on friday (he currently has no ddr4 rams nor ddr4 mobo's but hes getting them on wednesday, so thats the delay)

Hi There, Just looking for some troubleshooting help with my RAM. I just finished swapping out a crappy dead PSU and upgrading my fans and now the red RAM light is on and my pc won't post. I haven't been able to use my computer the last week because last Tuesday I was gaming when my computer suddenly crashed. At the time before it crashed nothing was wrong with the RAM. Anyways so now I've just spent the last 4 hours taking out all my old fans, installing new ones, re-did my cable management entirely (the guy who built my computer made an absolute mess of things), and installed the new PSU. After fiddling for 45mins trying to get the case closed I finally felt like I was done and was super excited to get back on my computer after so long.. but nope! RAM light is on and it won't post. It definitely has power, all the lights, fans and everything turn on and I can see it try to boot.. but as it turns on it checks the CPU, RAM, GPU, etc.. and has little lights on the mobo that go green when everything is okay.. The RAM light is solid red though.. I've tried taking them out and reinstalling them but no luck. pressed the MemOK! button after but still no post and the light goes back to red! This was my first time ever working on my own computer and everything went pretty good except this last hiccup.. Could it be possible that when my PSU died it fried the RAM or something? I have a window on my case and when the PSU died there was a flash or something that I only saw out of the corner of my eye. Something was bright for a second but when I turned it was already dark.. Not sure if the PSU even has anything to do with it but I figured I'd let you know since it was working before I did these recent repairs/upgrades. Also thanks in advance for any help! Even if its just any thoughts/ideas that come to mind, doesn't have to just be a solution! Any feedback you can give me is appreciated!

Hello. I want to buy Noctua NH-D15 to cool my brand new i7 6700K. My motherboard is Asus Z170-A, and I have a Fractal R5 case. My main concern is the weight of the cooler (1.32 kg), which seems very heavy. I've read a lot of reviews on the Z170-A board, and one of the main flaws this board has is a weak backplate. My concern increases because I'm planning to move my computer as well (a 9-hour drive on pretty bad roads across Norway), and I'm very worried that I'll find my computer in pieces when I arrive. Any tips on what to do? Is the mobo strong enough for this cooler? And how should I move my rig without breaking anything? Dissasembling is not optional, I'm not tech savvy enough to reassemble it.
