Hello dear community, My name is Dino, and I am a CCNA network engineer and a computer geek who also likes making music. This is my first post so I'll try to be as detailed as possible in a easy-to-understand matter. I have a major issue with the XPS 9500, a laptop I have saved up for after years of watching incredible reviews on it, including Linus', I have spent months looking for a fix but I found none so here I am on THE forum to go! I do music production and I enjoy gaming in my free time, but I have noticed that the fans ramp up a lot, yet the laptop thermal throttles like CRAZY. I am aware this is not a gaming laptop but with specs like these... it should be defending it's price tag. I even went ahead and played with the BIOS settings, stuff like Intel Speed Shift, Speed Step and C-State, but none of them helped (disabling Speed Shift actually locked my CPU clock to 2.6GHz which was a no go). Some have advised downgrading BIOS v1.6.1 to an earlier one, but it seems Dell doesn't let you revert after the 1.6.1 upgrade... Below is a screenshot from Ghost Recon: Wildlands as an example (a game that can be run by these specs on High - Ultra easily) - It drops from 4.6GHz to a mere 1.6-2.2GHz and I barely get 60FPS out of it. Any help is appreciated https://imgur.com/rZ1NvKR Specs: i7-10750H - 2.6 up to 5GHz, 6 cores 12 threads GTX 1650Ti - 4GB VRAM 32GB RAM - 2933MHz - dual channel 1TB NVMe SSD

hello everyone, i was browsing dell's website cuz i was bored, when i realised, that they've actually got some pretty good black friday deals going on, for as much as a 20% discount on an xps 15 the only problem is, i was browsing the german site, meaning that units bought from there will come equipped with a quertz keyboard layout instead of a querty (i know i can shop in other european countries like the Netherlands and stuff, but i haven't found a similarly great deal YET) so my question is pretty simple, would a keyboard layout change be anything more than a setting in windows 11? and if so, how difficult(and expensive) would it be for me to source an xps 15 9510 querty keyboard??

I need a laptop for a portable video (up to 4K60) editing machine and have narrowed it down to either an M1 MacBook or the Dell XPS 15. The main thing I'm looking for in this case is a computer that'll provide the best possible experience in Premiere Pro for ~$1300 or less. I've scoured many articles but I'm simply not sure which one is better suited. I mainly want the fastest possible render time and overall very smooth performance. I don't need anything insane since this won't be my main editing rig. I haven't really worked with laptops for a long time (the last time I edited on a laptop was 10 years ago) so I have no real reference to rely on anymore. Thus, I'm reaching out. For my type of editing, I mostly take high res video of weather events, vehicles, and aviation and make it suitable for clients or YT. I don't do anything really crazy with it, I just do color correction, trim the video and make it look pro.

Hello, I've owned the XPS 15 9500 for about a year and a half at this point. Mine is equipped with the i7-10750h, dedicated 1650Ti and the 4k screen. This laptop is amazing, the battery life isn't bad, the keyboard and the trackpad are amazing, the speakers are very good, and the 4k screen is the best screen I have ever looked at. I decided to update to Windows 11 once I got the notification the update was available, and I have not seen many issues, apart from one that keeps bugging me: The 4k UI performance is absolutely horrible. I saw a similar thing with Windows 10 and HDR enabled: the Windows UI would seem sluggish, running at what I'm guessing is 30-45 FPS. Video playback wasn't better either, 1080p video would sustain 60 FPS, but with evident drops from time to time. 4k video, while seemingly supporting 60FPS, would not run at 60FPS (more like 40). I assumed this was an issue caused by Windows' handling HDR, so I just kept HDR off (it kills the battery anyway). Updating to Windows 11, the UI seems as if I had HDR enabled on Windows 10, except I don't even have HDR enabled. The "beautiful" new animations seem sluggish and delayed. Video playback is fine but watching Netflix with Dolby Vision clearly shows FPS drops during certain moments. Enabling HDR in Windows settings makes the problem worse. Disabling the transparency effects definitely helps, but even this feels slow compared to Windows 10 and my brother's Asus Zenbook 13 (2019). This issue has bugged me since the day I bought the laptop. I have tried everything that came to my mind: Windows settings, graphics driver settings, DFU reinstallation of graphics drivers, general driver updates (my system is up to date). I went as far as to undervolt the laptop to see if that would help. It did not (but it definitely helped the overall performance and battery life). I have posted this question on reddit and other forums (this is where I got the recommendation of DFU). Now I come here for advice. Is this how the laptop is supposed to perform? That is, is my integrated GPU not powerful enough to drive Windows UI elements at 3840x2400? I am a computer engineering student living in a dorm. This laptop is my main (and only) computer, and I have spent hours over the course of a year and a half trying to fix the outlined issue. Here is what I have discovered: (Most of these were stated above, but I'll repeat for clarity) 1. DFU helped, a lot. Then I got a Windows update notification for Intel - Display, and it made it worse again, so I DFUd again. This time, the windows update did not make it worse, but something keeps telling me that the first time I did it was better than what I have now (mind you, I did not spend a lot of time before doing the windows update). 2. Undervolting might have done *something*, but it might just be the system being snappier overall that makes me say that. 3. The Intel graphics command center (the new control panel they have) is the smoothest experience I have had on this device. Scrolling this forum does not feel as responsive as that application. The fact that driver updates make the issue better or worse makes me think that this is a driver issue. Has anyone else with the same laptop either experienced the same issue, or is aware of a fix? Thank you - an aspiring computer engineer

Hey everyone! I've been using my XPS for about 6 months now and for about a week nowy i've been getting abysmal battery performance. Attached you can see that, at idle, i'm discharging at 40 watts! I've seen it never below 20 watts and as high as 60 watts. At. Idle. I've tried both the windows power plan and dell's power plan. Also, the discharge rate does not change when I switch from "better battery" to "power saving" in the power mode. How tf is that possible. I'm quite disturbed, seeing that other people get about 2 - 4 watts at idle. I've already done a golden image driver install of all drivers, i've updated windows to the newest I can, I deactivated my dGPU and I uninstalled my secondary ssd that I upgraded the laptop with, to no avail. I wanted to check in with all of you to see if someone has anything I could do. Last thing i can think of is a golden image OS install, else I will let hell loose with dell support. Cause an 86 wHr battery lasting for literally 30 mins is... Unnacceptable. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey, new here and I am planning to get a new laptop (mostly for content creation and general use using multiple monitors) Im currently leaning towards either the Dell XPS or the Asus ZenBook Q538EI but have hit a quandary. It seems like the Asus is a better Laptop in almost every way and its significantly cheaper too. Am I missing something??? (like it has 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports and even a Number pad lol!!!)

Hey, I'm looking to get a new laptop for when college starts back up in September. I also do a lot of content creation so I need a laptop that's powerful enough for creative cloud. The two laptops that I'm stuck between are: Dell XPS 15 Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Obviously the XPS is built a lot better, but I'm just wondering whether there's any major issue with the Inspiron that holds it back. Like the specs are the same but maybe cooling is different idk. There's also a choice of 10% student discount on both laptops so they aren't too far in price. And I'll buying the laptop in a few months so maybe prices will go lower with an XPS 15 2020 release! So to clarify, is there anything blatantly wrong with the Inspiron 15? What are your thoughts? Budget 1000-1600, give or take! (Edit: I'm not into laptops with the 'gamer' look, although a lot of them are great! And once I can edit photos and do small 4k edits, like changes to an existing timeline, I have a decent PC at home)

Hey so i recently downloaded dell updates on my dell xps 15 (9550) but for whatever reason since then a few seconds after startup the task bar becomes un-clickable then the computer becomes unresponsive and eventually windows crashes...anyone encountered this or have a fix? thanks

So I need a new laptop and I settled on the Dell XPS 15. The only problem is that I live in the Czech Republic but I use an American layout keyboard (I don't write anything in Czech) and I'm already used to it. Is there an option to get an American layout keyboard on a laptop without buying and importing it from the US?

Hi! I need to buy a new laptop and have been looking at the FHD model of the new Dell XPS 15 and the Razer blade because they meet my requirements of being portable, good battery, enough performance and professional looking (for business meetings). I will mostly use the laptop for regular use (browsing, watching movies, etc.) and sometime game for 2-3h (Cs go, Dota 2, H1Z1) both on the move and at home. I will also use the laptop for work with clients so it needs to look professional. I will not do any coding, music or video production. I won't have a desktop computer (need to sell it because I have no space for it, blame my girlfriend.. ) Between these 2 I know that they both have thermal problems and that there are better options if you consider performance or bang for buck. It's a trade of for being very portable which for me is worth it. I think I might go for the Dell XPS 15. Here is my reasoning. + Dell has a bigger screen with the same form factor as the razer blade (almost) + Dell has better battery + Dell has better support and the availability of the xps 15 in europe is much better. + Dell has upgradable ram, Razer don't. However it doesn't really matter because 16 GB is more than enough for me. - The Blade will be more powerfull with the 1060 instead of Dells 1050. I think the 1050 will be powerfull enough for the games I play (CS GO, Dota 2, H1Z1) ? - The Blade have thunderbolt with PCIe x4 instead of the x2 in the Dell. It will only matter if I use a eGPU and the internal display? If I use a eGPU in the future it will be with a external monitor anyways. - Slow responstime (ghosting) on the Dell. Hope that is better than the old model. Am I wrong? Should I pick the razer blade instead? Are there any upcoming laptop that I should look at instead? Any blade owners who want to change my mind?

Hi All, Does anyone here have any real-world experience with the new Dell TB16 Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Specifically the 240W version and how reliable it is at powering a Dell XPS 15 9550 as the prospect of powering my laptop whilst connecting to all my peripherals simultaneously via a single cable is extremely enticing, particularly as my laptop is my daily driver that I take with me everywhere. I read some horrifying reviews about the TB15 some months back and decided to hold off until Dell got their act together, however I'm finding it quite difficult to find any reliable reviews of this function on the web. If anyone with actual experience in using the TB16 could provide some insights I'd very much appreciate it! Thanks in advance! Lloyd

I just got an XPS 15 for college, and it performs decently however when I tried to play rather basic games (Slime rancher, Half life, and geometry dash) However games are performing terribly for some reason. Slime rancher surprising acts fine for a bit before it over heats, however for Half life and Geometry dash, they are basically unplayable. For half life, for example, I fiddled with every setting and it performs pretty much the same from 4k HD graphics to like 800x600 sd. Eventually, I tried playing it out of full screen, and somehow it performed 4k HD perfectly in windowed, and while that is... some kind of solution, it's certainly not preferred. Also, with geometry dash, I tried playing 800x600, the smallest definition I could and it was literally too jittery to play however taking it into windowed mode made it play 4k high easily, anybody knows what to do? I made sure all drivers were up to date (BTW it's a GTX 1050). I installed MSI afterburner and it shows that both integrated GPU and discrete GPU are being used a decent bit which I feel may have to do with it.

Hi, I bought a used XPS 15 laptop about 4 months ago. It worked as I wanted it to and I've had no problems with it up until now. I use it play CS: GO quite a bit and last night I started to have terrible fps. Before that, I had about 100fps average on the game and know I have barely 15. First I thought that I had some heat problems because my fans were not spining when I was gaming and so I downloaded Open Hardware Monitor. It turned out that my components where running at a decent 65 celcius when gaming but my GPU was barely doing work. The usage was at 12% on the GPU core, 6% on the memory controller, 0% on the video engine and 23% on the GPU memory when gaming. When I open up a game, it peaks at 100% because of my NVIDIA control panel settings but it goes to this usage in about 5 seconds. My CPU usage is normal too, it reaches 40 to 50% usage when gaming. I downloaded the most recent drivers on GeForce experience and I don't know what to do anymore. Thank you very and have a great day

I'm looking to get a laptop and haven't found too many options besides the XPS 15. I'm probably being very picky for a laptop that will be a secondary pc since I have a desktop, but I've used too many cheap laptops that get sluggish real fast. This will mostly be for casual web browsing, watching videos, and some 3D CAD modeling if I take it to work. I'd like a 15" display, 8+ gb ram, 128+ gb ssd, i7 cpu, and thunderbolt. The XPS 15 9560 with 7700HQ has all of this and with the current 10% off deal it's $1,400. Thunderbolt is the feature that many laptops don't seem to have yet. XPS 15 9560 Is there anything closer to $1,000 with similiar specs? Thanks

After reading this: I feel that this could be the beginning of laptops having batteries larger than 99 Watt hours. Although the 99Whr limit that is placed on Li-ion batteries that doesn't allow you to bring batteries larger than that onto airplanes is still in effect, if there is no reason for companies to not use larger batteries in their laptops (with a sacrifice in weight and size obviously). Why was this even proposed if the 99Whr limit is still in place? Are devices with batteries larger than a "cell phone" still able to be brought on a plane, just not onto the passenger area of the plane? To be clear, I get that 99Whr battery laptops aren't common, but I don't see a good reason to not have more of them around, especially if there are a lot of consumers who would rather have a larger battery than a slightly lighter laptop. What do you guys think? Dell's XPS 15 is an example of a popular device with a 99Whr battery. Imagine if you had something with the efficiency of the XPS 13 with an Intel "U" processor, and a 99Whr+ battery. Two days of battery. Easy. I know that a laptop like that is certainly something I would buy.

Hi! DELL put the 1050 in their new XPS 15 instead of the 1050 TI. Benchmark at notebookcheck is already out showing that the notebook 1050 is slower than a 965m and only 20% better than the 960m. The 1050 ti is 50-60% faster than the 960m as early leaks have showed. If these benchmarks are correct then why the hell did they choose the non TI variant when they share the same TDP. I´ve been waiting on a slim businesses looking laptop with good battery life and graphical power to play most games at 1080p 60fps+ and thought the DELL XPS 15 9560 would be the one.... http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mainstream-Pascal-GeForce-GTX-1050-Ti-and-GTX-1050-in-Review.189822.0.html

Hi! It´s been confirmed by dell that the Thunderbolt 3 port is the same as in the old model and won´t support speeds up to 40gbps because they still only use 2 PCIe lanes instead of 4. The XPS 13 2-1 will however have full thunderbolt speed. I´ve been waiting a long time for the new dell XPS 15. I thought that I finally would get a portable professional laptop with good battery life and the power to play games without looking like a toy, and the option to use a eGPU later on when the 1050 wouldn´t be enough. Do anyone recommend any other laptop that is similar but with full Thunderbolt 3 speeds?

I am planning on buying the high end version of the Dell XPS 15 with Kaby Lake core i7, GTX 1050, and 16 GB of RAM. I am wondering if that'll be good enough to last me about 6-8 years. I understand that if I want high performance throughout the years I would need to upgrade. However, if I just want to do daily work would it be enough while not being slow? Or do you guys have some other advice for me?

Hi! I have a PC with a 24" monitor, but for collage I have to buy a laptop. I would like to get a xps 15, but the xps 13 is cheaper, and I would like to know, is if 13" is doable (after 25"), or I will have struggles with it. Thank you for your help!

Hey guys, I'm trying to decide buying a used laptop. My budget is about $1500. I'm a high school student in an engineering class. I do some light CAD and I game sometimes on the weekends. I often play games like rocket league (however I'm so busy that I probably play like twice a month) but it would be nice to have the ability to play more intense games like The Division 2 (however, not required). I'm probably gonna go for an engineering degree when I go into college and would like be able to use programs like Solidworks then. I usually play on the weekends, so I don't play too much. However, I'm a bit split on my decision. I can probably afford a local used Razer Blade 15 with a 1070, but I'm unsure of reliability issues (Should I go for the 1060 or the 1070). I've heard that they have problems, but what's your people's input? Would the power of the XPS 15 with a 1050ti suffice? Would it be worth getting the XPS 15 because of the reliability over the Razer Blade? I don't have to worry about battery life too much between the two though because I'll always have a charger and a plug. However, which would fit my need more?

Hi, Yesterday, my XPS 15 9560 suddenly stopped working. I'm running Windows 10 pro, didn't install any new software myself, and now it doesn't boot into anything other than safe mode. Sometimes it doesn't even boot to safe mode with network drivers enabled. I have no clue as to what caused this, I tried disabling the devices with the newest drivers, the ones that have no driver assigned to them, and even tried resetting Windows with a Media creation tool stick. I don't have any backups that I put on a stick previously unfortunately, but none of those options above work either. Nothing but booting to safe mode works. If anyone here has encountered this problem before, or knows how to help in any way, without me losing all my data, I'd appreciate it a ton. Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone! I will do my best with english since it's not my first language and will be thankful for your time and any replies I will be getting. So I have been using MSI Afterburner and rivatuner statistics server (RTSS) for a while on my desktop computer with no issues at all. I recently tried to use these programs on my Dell XPS 15 and the RTSS just won't show up. Laptop details: Laptop - Dell XPS 15 Model 9550 Windows 10 home - Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.316) Processor: intel i5-6300HQ 2.3GHz Display adapters: Intel HD graphics 530 & NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M MSI Afterburner works fine and I can see the graphs for the specs I'm interested in (GPU and CPU load and temperature) and the graphs are working without issues. It's also worth mentioning that I did select the option to show OSD for each spec I want to appear in the OSD and the I did map a hotkey to toggle the OSD. Basically these settings work great for me on my desktop but when I tried on the laptop... in a game the OSD just never shows up even with the toggle hotkey. i gave it a try in multiple Steam games and in Overwatch and the OSD never works. I also took the time to change some settings in RTSS following old threads suggestions and it did not work either. (all these suggested changes were not needed for the same games on my desktop. on the desktop it all worked without any issues off the bat. I have taken the time to lookup this problems and I have not found any answers that worked for me. Anyone has had this problem before? Any suggestions? Thanks you for your time

Hello, My dell XPS 15 9570 (i7-8750h + GX 1050 ti) idle temp seems to sit around 50C. I have undervolt my laptop to -0.125 mV using throttleStop but I see no improvement in my temp. Is it normal for the laptop to be around 50C - 55C during idle and low work task (ie web serving, typing document)? My dell laptop is refurbished from dell website and I am owning it for about a week now. Also my fan can fluctuate between 35DB to 40DB during idle and low work task. My room temp is around 70F to 75F.
