  1. I'll be entering college next fall as a computer engineering major and I'm currently looking at laptop options. I'm currently leaning towards the new XPS 13 Plus specked as follows: Dell XPS 13 Plus i7-1280P 32 GB RAM Iris Xe Graphics 2 TB SSD UHD+ 3840 x 2400 touch display I am concerned about a few things, mainly the lack of ports, and the ability of the integrated graphics to handle software like MatLab and Solidworks. I also haven't heard great things about the battery life, especially if I use a UHD+ display. Because of the lack of a dedicated graphics card in the XPS 13, I've been looking at the new XPS 15 but it seems like this comes with extreme battery sacrifices and will require an even larger hit to my wallet. I'm looking for a laptop that will be able to comfortably handle my workload for the next 4-5 years with a decent battery life that won't require me to be tethered to a charger and be reasonably portable. The Mac ecosystem seems too insulated and expensive for what I want, and a lot of the other high-end laptops in this price range seem like huge gaming laptops with terrible battery performance. I'm looking for something in the 2,000-2,5000 range including peripherals like USB hubs. Answers to these questions would be helpful in my decision-making process: Do I need a discrete graphics card to run engineering software or will integrated graphics serve me fine? Are there problems with the UHD+ display and battery life? Would opting for the FHD display be worth the sacrifice for battery life? How big of a sacrifice is only having 2 USB C ports? I've never had a personal laptop so I don't really know what my usage is. Should I be looking at larger laptops that offer more performance but have significant sacrifices with battery life and portability?
  2. Hey peeps i have been thinkig of getting a new laptop and i was woundering if you peeps could help me decide ? which should go for: HP Spectre x360, Dell XPS 13(2in1 or standard) or Surface pro 4 ? (wait for the surface pro 5 ? ) was also thinking about the Razor Blade stealth but unfortunatly it is unavailable in Norway Please leave comments on your experiences with the differnt devices
  3. I have a formatted drive on my laptop, Dell XPS 13 9333, and I want to install windows. However I have tried multiple times and I always get stuck, either on on "Getting devices ready" or just a blank screen. Help is much appreciated as I need this laptop for school.
  4. I recently purchased an xps 13 9350 and was wondering if there are touchpad setting people like to use with the laptop?
  5. Intel said the new Kaby Lake generation is a beast for video encoding and decoding! Is it true? When going to a computer store and you ask them if you could render and edit 4k videos on an Ultrabook. All of them would probably tell you to get a real laptop with dedicated graphics. Since Kaby Lake however, this changed and I didn’t believe it myself before trying it. One big secret for onboard video rendering is probably the newest Iris P640 generation. So you need at least an i7-7560U or i7-7660U, I believe most of that render speed comes from the Iris Pro CPUs. In this following video I show you my results on my DELL XPS 13 with an i7-7560U. I edited and rendered a 4 minutes and 41 seconds long 5K video for my school. Surprisingly the rendering process goes much faster or almost the same compared to my 6700K Skylake processor and NVIDIA GTX970 in my desktop machine. The CPU usage was at a constant 100% and kept its speed at 2.8GHz. I was rendering in low power mode with no power cable connected. This doesn’t mean the i7-7560U is a power horse for gaming! Hell its a 15watts low power CPU! Most new AAA titles are barely playable at lowest settings. However, for my workload and video editing needs this Ultrabook proofed to be worth it. I choose the XPS 13 because of better thermal temperatures compared to the HP x360. (Please consider my native language is not English! Thank You!)
  6. I need wifi/bluetooth adapter (m.2) that supports osx sierra. Here's the catch, I need it to arrive in Vancouver within a week or so or I'm kinda screwed. The wifi adapter everyone seems to use, the dw1560, only ships on ebay from China and would take forever to get here. What are my best options?
  7. Hi there, I have a Dell XPS 13 laptop that I purchased about 6 months ago. About every three weeks the laptop will decide it doesn't want to stay off for a day or two. If you put it to sleep or shut it down it just immediately turns back on again. This will persist for a day or two then it will go back to normal. Nothing noticeable seems to be triggering this problem or causing it to stop. This happens both when plugged and unplugged, and I already checked to make sure "wake while plugged in" was turned off in bios. No other bios settings seem out of order. There have been plenty of Dell updates recently so everything should be up to date. I'm hesitant to contact Dell support because I don't want to go through the usual "have you tried restarting your computer? *2 hours later* Oh, everything seems fine we'll have to send you a new laptop. Any help is greatly appreciated!
  8. I've been waiting on the new MacBook Pro release for a while but after the not-so-great release and the price tag of $1400 for the base model, I'm looking into alternatives. I'll be using the laptop for college so needs to be portable with a good battery life. I've looked into a few and came to the 3 different choices. Razor blade stealth, xps 13, or just going with the MacBook Pro. Any suggestions to which I should get? I like the xps 13 but I love the build and design of the blade stealth and the MacBook.
  9. Hello! I wanted to ask you guys what you would go with if you had to decide between an XPS 13 and a Macbook Pro 13. I would buy the XPS that has 8gb RAM, 250gb SSD and an i5-7200u with the Full HD display. This would cost me 1530€. For the Macbook I would go with an i5, 8gb of ram and a 128gb storage, non touchbar verison. The laptop itself would be 1440€ but I would also buy an additional 500gb external ssd. I really cant decide between the two, size and weight is practically the same, performance is the same, I don't care about the OS. The big benefit of the mac is the brilliant screen with great scaling, but the xps has more battery life and way more IO (altho it is still poor). What would you guys go with? Any alternatives at the same price? Keep in mind I cant get the LG Gram or the Razer stealth in europe unless I want to pay an absolutely crazy premium. Thanks.
  10. Source: https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/8/28/16202002/dell-8th-generation-kaby-lake-updates-xps-13-inspiron Today Dell is updating its popular XPS 13 lineup with new 8th generation Intel processors. These are the new 8th generation CPUs recently announced by Intel that feature 4 cores rather than the traditional 2 for u series CPUs. Traditionally u series CPUs were 15 watt dual core hyperthreaded parts aimed squarely at thin and light ultrabooks. They slotted in between Intel's ultra lower power y series (formerly known as core m) fanless cpus and the more powerful 28 watt dual core hyperthreaded CPUs that featured higher clock speeds and (usually) more powerful graphics. However with cannonlake (and thus an ipc increase) delayed, and Intel having just pulled a clock speed trick with Kaby Lake, Intel really only had one direction to improve performance with 8th generation CPUs: more cores. And so now we have 15 watt u series CPUs that feature 4 cores and 8 threads; double that of the past few generations. Clock speeds have taken a bit of a hit due to more cores obviously needing more power, with all the new u series CPUs having a base clock speed under 2 ghz, but I wouldn't be surprised if, with decent cooling, we could see a lot of laptops using these CPUs boosting higher into the 2 ghz range. The only change to the new XPS 13 laptops are the CPUs. Everything else is still the same as before.
  11. After reading this: I feel that this could be the beginning of laptops having batteries larger than 99 Watt hours. Although the 99Whr limit that is placed on Li-ion batteries that doesn't allow you to bring batteries larger than that onto airplanes is still in effect, if there is no reason for companies to not use larger batteries in their laptops (with a sacrifice in weight and size obviously). Why was this even proposed if the 99Whr limit is still in place? Are devices with batteries larger than a "cell phone" still able to be brought on a plane, just not onto the passenger area of the plane? To be clear, I get that 99Whr battery laptops aren't common, but I don't see a good reason to not have more of them around, especially if there are a lot of consumers who would rather have a larger battery than a slightly lighter laptop. What do you guys think? Dell's XPS 15 is an example of a popular device with a 99Whr battery. Imagine if you had something with the efficiency of the XPS 13 with an Intel "U" processor, and a 99Whr+ battery. Two days of battery. Easy. I know that a laptop like that is certainly something I would buy.
  12. Back in Oct 2016, Dell confirmed that they were working on a convertible 2 in 1 version of the XPS 13, and would be announced in CES 2017. It seems Dell could reach its original target. Windows Central discovered an image and blank product page on Dell's website about a new notebook called "XPS 13 2 in 1", not much was known about the new machine as it is a blank product page. But from the image, it seems the new laptop would still feature the Infinity Edge display, and the laptop will turn to tablet mode by folding the screen backward via a 360° hinge, not via flipping the screen like the old XPS 12 which Linus owned. Windows Central suggested that we could expect a similar config with the Kaby Lake version of the XPS 13. We could know more about this new laptop if Dell included this in its CES 2017 line up. http://www.theverge.com/2017/1/1/14139216/dell-xps-13-2-in-1 http://m.windowscentral.com/dell-reveals-xps-13-9365-convertible-laptop XPS 13 2-in-1's product page http://www.dell.com/ca/p/xps-13-9365-2-in-1-laptop/pd?dgc=BA&cid=306033&lid=5794655&acd=123092276202786724c101156640&ven3=101303210613466223 Dell Launching 2-in-1 Version of XPS 13 at CES 2017 (10/10/2016) http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/xps-13-2-in-1 *update: Dell revealed this laptop, but it is a bit disappointing.... -Core i5-7Y54 or Core i7-7Y75 processor -up to 16GB of ram -FHD/QHD display - 802.11ac wireless -one Thunderbolt 3 port, one micro-SD card slot, and one USB Type-C 3.1 ports - including a USB-C to USB-A adapter -1.24 kilograms/2.7 pounds, 0.32 to 0.54 inches thick -currently only available in silver color LaptopMag.com has an exclusive review of this machine, which you can read it via this link: http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/dell-xps-13-2-in-1
  13. Hi guys I'm gonna get a laptop quite soon, and I got down to 2 options which are: the dell xps 13 developer edition (cause linux goodness) and the asus rog gl752vw-something I really don't know which one to choose between these two, one is an ultrabook that I will probably need for school and the other one is more of a desktop replacement. I'm going to program a bit, game a bit (more if I get the asus), do schoolwork on both The keyboard is very important to me, and battery life is important only if I have to go to school with it. That's all, let me know what you think.
  14. Hi! I have a PC with a 24" monitor, but for collage I have to buy a laptop. I would like to get a xps 15, but the xps 13 is cheaper, and I would like to know, is if 13" is doable (after 25"), or I will have struggles with it. Thank you for your help!
  15. Hi All, I'm looking for an ultrabook for school and some personal programming work. I've narrowed my search down to 2 devices; the Dell XPS 13 9380 and MacBook Pro 13". The XPS is the model with 16gb of RAM, a 512gb SSD, the i7 8765u and the 1080p non-touch display, costing me about $1500. The MacBook Pro is the 4 thunderbolt port 2019 model, with the i5 8257u, 16gb of RAM, and 256gb SSD, which will cost me about $2000. I understand that the MacBook is the better device in regards to build quality, trackpad, keyboard, screen, and speakers, but is it $500-600 better? What do you guys think, and any other suggestions are also appreciated. Thanks, Lukas
  16. Dumb question, but if I wanted to plug a monitor into my XPS 13, would I get a type C to Male or Female DP? I'm not bothered about it being active either as its going to be getting plugged and unplugged a lot.
  17. I've done a lot of work researching for a college laptop and I've narrowed my list down to three, all being xps models. Below is a link for my compare thing on dell's website. (There are a lot of different configs and I want to clearly show which three I decided could possibly be for me ram, storage, resolution). If I buy this month (July 2018) I can save 200 dollars on the 13 or the 2in1 which will make the prices more even. https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/compare?ocs=cax15w10p1c403,smx15w10p1c1608,cax13w10p1c609 I know that the 8550u is a solid performer for productivity in the 13, but I don't know as much about the 8705g in the 2in1 or the 8750h in the 15. I read a little about each of them in intel's website, but I cant tell if the integrated Vega graphics in the 2in1 are better than the 1050ti in the 15. I know that the 8750h is superior performance wise to the 8705g in CPU tasks, but again, I don't know which combo is better. It was hard for me to tell how the battery life is affected on each laptop saying that the 15 has the CPU and GPU, but has a larger battery than the 2in1 with the bundled graphics which I assume will consume less battery. I know that the 13 is very portable, but I was unsure about the 15 inch models. I read online that they were heavier and less portable, but they didn't say if it was atrocious or still good but not at the 13 level. How portable are the 15 inch units? When it comes to the 2in1, I'm unsure of the stability. I currently have an old hp envy 2in1 that wobbles horribly whenever it is bumped or the table its on moves at all. I know its not the best laptop ever, but I would like to know if the xps 15 2in1 is stable. The 2in1 feature is really cool and useful, but if it's annoying all of the time, then it might not be for me. Most of my questions require testing, actually having all three laptops, or overall good knowledge of laptops/Ultrabook. None of which I can do/have. I would appreciate any help as I know I can't go wrong with any of the choices, but I obviously want to make the best choice. Thank You! I added a poll because polls are fun.
  18. My dell XPS 13 9360 touchscreen won’t turn on the fans start up and the backlighting works but nothing comes on the screen
  19. I tried using the SD card reader in my XPS 13 9360 (Win10 64-bit) for the first time and it said the card was write protected. I tried some other cards and got the same result, but they all work fine on other computers. I cannot manually change the attributes of the files and I tried the registry and diskpart methods to change write protection with no luck. After an hour, Dell tech support told me the problem was not hardware related and thus not covered by the basic warranty. They want $200 to upgrade the warranty so the software department can look at it. Any Ideas? Am I right in assuming the issue is not Windows or the cards?
  20. Hello everybody, recently I've been starting to have this issue when web browsing. See the picture I've attached. It only appears in Firefox, not in any other program or window. It only stays for a few seconds then flickers a few times and disappears again. Sometimes it only affects a button or field or even a single row of text on whatever page I'm on. As soon as i hover over it with my mouse it disappears again. It happens when I'm connected via USB-C to Ethernet and when I'm using WiFi. Restarting my laptop helps but only for a couple of hours. I've reinstalled Firefox but to no avail. Switching to chrome is something I'd rather not do. Is this some bug in firefox or is it hardware related? It kinda seems like some GPU issue or artifacts to me. My Specs are as follows: XPS 13 9350 i5 6200U @ 2,3 GHz iGPU Intel HD Graphics 520 8 GB Ram 1920x1080 Screen (non-Touch)
  21. Which laptop would be more comfortable for a college setting. Might be using cad software on it even though I have a desktop I am commuting so I might need to use it on the laptop. People tell me a 15 in laptop is too big. Opinions on this?
  22. https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/dell-xps-13 This is something I've been greatly anticipating, but I'm left sorely disappointed. Aside from the webcam still being in the wrong place, one of my reservations on the last model was no HDMI port. It's doubled down on the seemingly ever shrinking port selection. My take away is: Less ports Less weight Less crappy webcam (though still not in the right place) Also they're using 4 PCIe lanes on their Thunderbolt 3 now, which is also used to charge the device, so yay? From LaptopMag's conclusion: So I guess that's me then, but I wasn't really sold on that one either. Here's hoping Razer announce a revamped Blade Stealth at CES with some kind of bio-metric authentication and a better battery life.
  23. Hello guys! I ordered an xps 13 from dell a few days and it arrived today. The machine itself gave me a very strong first impression until I found out the core i7-8550u cannot reach its full performance. Even when I am running heavy load tasks, the cpu only utilizes 65% of its full performance. The only reason I waited for the 8th gen ultrabook i7s is the extra performance on the go. Now I am kinda disappointed. I heard the HP spectre x360 is another solid ultrabook, and the 2 in 1 feature allows me to take notes during meetings and classes more conveniently. Does anyone have experience with the new HP spectre x360 with 8th gen i7? I would love to use some advice. Cheers!
  24. Dell Japan today officially revealed the new XPS 13 featuring Kaby Lake CPU, which the spec fit the info leaked from Dell.com a few days ago (u can read here: http://www.windowscentral.com/dell-xps-13-getting-intel-7th-gen-kaby-lake). The new XPS 13 is a minimum upgrade from the old one. It still feature the same chassis, display, ram,and etc. Dell upgraded the CPU/GPU, NIC and battery of the new XPS 13. The new XPS 13 in Japan will feature either a i5 7200U, or i7 7500U, which both featured Intel HD Graphics 620 (no Iris Pro option was announced). Interestingly, Dell upgraded the Wifi module with a Killer 1535 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi & Bluetooth 4.1, thus the new XPS 13 supports MU-MIMO (Multiuser multiple input, multiple output). Pls noted that you need a MU-MIMO supported router for this feature to work. Different from the leak, the ram speed on all models was kept at 1866MHz. Lastly, the new one has a larger battery, upgraded from 56Whr to a 60Whr one. Spec list of the new XPS 13 in Japan Only FHD ver of the new XPS 13 is now on pre-order in Japan, and will be shipped in late Oct. The availability of QHD+ ver is still TBA. Priced ranged from 124980 yen (~$1227) to 194980 yen (~$1914). http://www.gdm.or.jp/pressrelease/2016/0913/177883( in Japanese) http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/1019728.html(in Japanese)
  25. So like everyone else on the internet that has an XPS 13 9350 I was experiencing the fan being on all the time and getting high temps. I opened up the laptop and put some artic silver 5 on and put some thermal pads on the heat pipes. That put my temps down to about 65C under full load. My issue is now the fans aren't kicking in at all. I don't mind the no fan noise but now the coil whine is more noticeable and the bottom of the device gets hot due to no cooling fan. I already re-flashed the bios and for the heck of it reinstalled windows + drivers. Pretty sure this is a software problem so are there any programs that I can use to change the fan speeds?
