I’ve been using TrueNAS Core with 4 different Windows 11 VMs (I know not the most recommended) accessible via 6 Zero Clients and 4 Laptops (VMs have multi-users and running RDP Wrapper to achieve this) It was running all good for past 5-6 months but recently it’s been that TrueNAS shutdown the VM on it’s own whenever there is High usage in network shares. So, I’m thinking of shifting to a new platform for the Host OS. I’ve shortlisted three out of many which have support plans and I’ll be okay to take one for a support but not costing 25% of Server Cost per Year Proxmox (have used it multiple times but everytime some error or mis-configuration led me to shift from here, also it’s on a cheaper side for support plans) XCP-NG (have heard alot of good things but never tried it, plans are a bit expensive but I’m okay with it) VMware ESXi (have used it previously liked the way it handled VMs but have 2 problems, one, hardware raid for achieving redundant storage and second, expensive support plans and even the community isn’t that friendly) Now for the Hardware, AMD EPYC 7542 Supermicro H12SSL-I MBD Micron 128GB 3200MT/s ECC Memory (4x 32GB) Samsung 860 Evo 250GB x2 (for Host OS) Gigabyte Aorus 500GB x4 (in Mirror with Stripe) (for VM disks) Intel X710-DA2 10G SFP+ NIC Seagate Exos 10TB x2 (for network shares and local backup) With this kind of Hardware in a single node, what Host OS will be the best option for Virtualisation? (PS - for the single Node there are 2 backups available, one server at my home in different location from the above which will be installed at my office. And second in the cloud with Backblaze B2, obviously encrypted)

Image two: As stated: You know what, unlike pretty much every game studio ever, I believe these guys, mostly because I know how Source can look, and how earlier posted images of the game (long before they got onto Steam Greenlight) showed the exact same thing as in the game when you run it yourself. It's totally awesome, though I'd like to see some more green included in the ground and props. Xen will be huge. HUGE. They then talk about some technical stuff. One thing's worth mentioning: Source will also get a lighting overhaul adding deferred rendering bringing real-time lighting, shadows and god rays. Super sexy. Especially considering this is Source we're talking about. A 2004 engine (heavily modified though but still) with code going back to the Quake days. And it's pushing out this. Amazeballs. And it still looks realistic. Not overblown like current engines like to do. Subtle yet effective. They then talk about some color correction stuff and refined animations, but these are the main highlights I wanted to point out. So yeah. Good stuff's coming to our favourite remake.

Hi. For a while, I've been using Linux virtual machines for the majority of my browsing and other online activities but I've recently heard about the Xen hypervisor, which VirtualBox apparently, doesn't include so I am eager to find a way to use Xen-based virtual machines on both Windows and Linux. So far, I came across XCP-ng but it requires you to install it as an OS in a server machine before accessing it online on your main computer. Is there a more straightforward way to make and use Xen-based VM's, particularly on Windows like how you do it on VirtualBox with a more regular hypervisor? Thanks.

Hey folks, I'm having a bit of an issue with my server and where could be a better place to ask for help than here? :D So after having seen all of the X-Gamers 1-CPU videos I thought I might try aswell... A bit of backstory: I happen to have an HP-DL580 gen 7 idling around with an installation of xcp-ng (a free version of XEN) I hosted multiple VMs at Haxogreen (local hacker event) and it did it's job pretty well. So I wanted to use this as base for my test to play with two people on one machine. I used XCPs GPU-Passthrough to hand two cards to two VMs (Gtx 550 Ti and Quadro K420) I know these aren't baller GPUs but I wanted to see if it works first. Well: It doesn't Windows recognizes the cards, driver installs but on restart "Error 43" Google tells me this is because NVIDIA drivers refuse to load if they detect they are running in a virtualized environment. I found some solutions for unRaid like disabling Hyper-V or even patching the driver. Other solutions include spoofing the hv_vendor_id for kvm. Does anybody knnow how to do something like this in XCP/XEN? Ideally without installing another host system? Thanks in advance, Mathew_96

I've setup a Xen Server...... with networking issues The mobo is a Tyan S7012, which has 4 onboard Intel Gigabit NICs. I previously had Windows Server 2008r2 and then Server 2012r2 installed, and both detected all 4 NICs and saw that they were all full gigabit. Well recently, I wanted to more heavily experiment with virtualization, so I loaded Xen on the old beauty and when consoled into the hypervisor, it shows all 4 Intel Gigabit NICs. I set up a Windows Server 2008r2 VM and attached 2 physical ports to the VM, but it detects them as 100MB Realtek NICs. I thought that was strange, so I loaded Windows 10 Pro ver.1809, because I thought that it may be some OS issue, since 08r2 is so old, and Win 10 Pro detected the NICs as 100mb Realtek as well. Obviously this isn't ideal, but I'm not familiar enough with virtualization to know how to really dive into the guts and troubleshoot. Any suggestion, my nerds???

Budget and location £700. The build below is much cheaper because I tried to be reasonable about the performance I actually needed, but I'm happy to be convinced that I need to spend more on certain things. For example, I can afford an i7 or a Xeon CPU, but I thought it'd be an overkill for my needs. I'm based in the UK. Aim I'm a software developer, and this will be my new personal computer, which I'll use in the evenings and on weekends. All the software I use is web-based, except for my software development environment, my photo management app, my personal finance app and my video editing app (which I occasionally use). The web-based apps I use can often be demanding on the client (e.g., expensive JavaScript computation, HD videos). I only use Ubuntu Linux, but I won't be running it on bare metal. Instead, I'll be installing a hardware-level virtualization system (Qubes OS, based on Xen), which will manage multiple Ubuntu virtual machines. For this reason, I need a CPU and a mobo with good support for virtualization (i.e., Intel VT-x and Intel VT-d support, which is seems to be all recent Intel CPUs) and enough RAM (8GB is a bit tight). I'm not a gamer and the build is not meant for gaming. However, I'd like to have the option to add a dedicated GPU should I wish to play games in the future. Monitors and Peripherals I'll be reusing my existing kit: One full HD monitor (over HMDI), plus a keyboard/mouse kit. Why I'm upgrading I'm replacing my solid 8yo laptop as it's finally given up on the load I'm putting on it these days. Web pages with a lot of complex JavaScript are continuously getting slower, for example. So I'd like to get something that's fast enough for the software stack I use and will be using in the foreseeable future. The Candidate Build http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/TPTR23 I'm looking for the smallest case that a total noob like me can comfortably work with, and I also want it to be elegant or cool-looking -- I'm probably thinking of a unicorn! mATX is the largest form factor that I'd consider and the cases I really like are for mATX mobos, but they're huge and an absolute waste of space for the components above. That's why the build above is a mini ITX, and that case is the one I disliked the least (having spent many hours looking at every single case model from every major manufacturer and every single case with 4-5 stars from online retailers). The other mITX options were the EVGA Hadron Air (expensive because of the included PSU, which many actually complained about) and the InWin 901 (seems way too complicated for a first-timer, from the reviews I've read). The case I like the most is the BitFenix Phenom, but its mITX version is as big as its mATX counterpart (I created an equivalent mATX build for this reason). I think I'm less likely to regret going for a mITX case/mobo, but can be convinced otherwise. I'm looking for USB 3.1 or Thunderbolt 3 ports, as well as WiFi AC; I have the right equipment to get the most out of both. I discarded the H170 chipset because I couldn't find a mobo that supported USB 3.1 as well as my other requirements. I'm not getting an aftermarket cooling system because I think the stock one should be fine since I won't be playing games, but I'm happy to get one. Any thoughts on this? One important requirement is that the PC be quiet under load (< 30dB would be great). I'm also not interested in overclocking. Any criticism is most welcome! Thanks in advance.

This summer I intend to start a cluster with a combination of desktops I find on Craigslist and a some I build myself for a rendering rig as I do a lot of premiere, photoshop, and a BUNCH of 3D modeling/animation. I have been looking through videos and forums for a few weeks now with SO MANY QUESTIONS about cluster computing and had almost none of them adequately answered. Here are a few. 1.) Can multiple gpu's be passed through from separate systems? not for SLI, but for separate use, like CUDA. 2.) Can different nodes have different CPU vendors? (Ex: 3 with Intel, 2 with AMD) 3.) Cores or clocks? Should i rather get fx-6300's for more cores or pentium g3258's for overclocking/price (for multiple nodes) 4.) Proxmox or Xenserver? Xenserver DEFINITELY wins when it comes to simplicity and user friendliness, Proxmox seems like it has more room for advanced functionality and that sexy ability to access from the internet if forwarded correctly. 5.) With multiple cpus from diff vendors, in the VM, what would the cpu come up as (GenericXenCPU1?) and what drivers would I need? one last question that doesn't really have to do with me, but more with everyone else. 7.) Why doesn't everyone use cluster computing? I see all these people who get a new rig and throw the old one in an old room to rot. Why not make them nodes and use them both? Hope the forums can help, as this is my first non-giveaway-related post here even though ive been watching LMG since its creation.

I am very open on critics, suggestions and questions too. I know that colors will not pair good. Okay, what would I play? For now SimCity(don't laugh), probably BF4 and good games on the future.
