Just finished an X79 Motherboard build, and the system refuses to keep the same boot settings after shutting down. There is an m.2 slot with Windows installed (set to the first boot priority) - But when the system shuts down, the first boot priority changes to: “ [ PATA SM: ] “ It is possible to go into the American Megatrends BIOS and manually change the boot priority back to the m.2 drive - but this process repeats itself every time the system shuts down. There is no way to keep the m.2 drive as the first boot priority. I have tried removing the CMOS battery for 30 minutes, and I also tried following the steps in this video (warning: the video quality is really terrible): https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=SwojbDSCkWQ But this did not work because Fast Boot is already disabled (my settings already look similar). Maybe this video is still helpful because this is basically what the BIOS looks like. -------- Why is this happening? How can this be fixed so that the boot priority can be the same (m.2 drive) every time?

I tried doing an AliExpress build using this X79 Motherboard: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803420946453.html?spm=a2g0s.imconversation.0.0.59113e5fIaet4j&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa “ JGINYUE X79 ATX LGA 2011 GAMING6 MOTHERBOARD “ CPU: INTEL XEON E5-2695 V2 RAM: 256GB DDR3 PC3L-10600L LRDIMM Server Memory Samsung M386B8G70DE0-YH9 (4 x 64GB) GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 (12GB) PSU: Apevia Spirit 700 watts BIOS: American MegaTrends: 2.17.1246 The system takes about a full-minute to POST - so I asked the JGINYUE store for an updated BIOS file. They sent me a ZIP file that has a ROM file ( “ X7GING6.ROM “ ), a Windows Batch File ( “ x “ ), and an Application file ( “ AFUDOS “ ). How do I use this to update the BIOS? I have looked for YouTube videos and I have looked on the American MegaTrends website, but I do not see any way to use these files to update the BIOS? If I CAN get this updated, can I actually expect this to speed-up the startup time to the POST screen? I don’t even know where to start with these BIOS files…

The motherboard is a bit faulty as there was pin damage on the CPU socket (which I have repaired, but still stability is dicey) The graphics card works but both the Fans are dead and replacement is unavailable in the market here at the moment. I could not find a X79 replacement motherboard in the current market. I am trying to look for ways to get this thing working and upgrade saving the memory, processor and PSU. Any advise on the upgrade path will be helpful. Target usage will be Gaming and a bit of development work (Unity / Vstudio)

My Asus Sabertooth X79 shipped with an older .rom BIOS that doesn't support the Xeon E5-2650 I'm trying to install. The support page says that BIOS number 4502 is necessary for my CPU to be supported, but I can only get to BIOS number 1203 because it is the last .rom revision. BIOS number 4502 is a .cap BIOS file. The support page mentions .rom to .cap converter software in the driver section in BIOS-UTILITIES, but no such software is to be found. Needless to say, the system hasn't posted yet. Is this software archived anywhere else, or was there any reason why it was removed from the Asus website? Please help! There isn't too much info out there about x79 motherboards, since most of them are just a low-cost alternative on Aliexpress for those who might not be able to afford higher end hardware. That said, I know Linus did a couple videos in the past regarding these motherboards, so I thought this would be the place to find other people who know their way around it. Is the motherboard compatible with a dual graphics card set up? If you're not sure, do you know of a way that I might be able to check this? I tried reaching out to the vendor, but in Aliexpress tradition they haven't been very helpful. Here's a link to the motherboard: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001296108397.html?spm=a2g0o.cart.0.0.ee283c00WUT7Dm&mp=1

OK - I dont know if this is the correct forum, if not, please redirect me... I have an older system (april '14) based on the "Ultimate Video Editing Rig"-video from around that same period. It is used mainly for development work, content creation (UE, Blender, 3DS Max, Adobe PP and AE) and a bit of gaming (WoW, Crysis, SWToR, Star Citizen and the likes...) Config: ASUS P9X79-E WS Intel Core i7 4930K@3.40Hz 32 GB RAM DDR3-1066 EVGA GTX 780 TI 2 x 250GB Samsung SSD 840 EVO 2 x 1TB Western Digital WDC 1 x 2TB Western Digital WDC Corsair i680 PSU Fractal Design Define R5 Case HP LP3065 Monitor (2560*1600 @ 60Hz) CPU and GPU is not OC'ed and the system is cooled by a custom Water loop. This system was about 4000€ incl. the water loop and it still perfoms, but it is starting to show signs of fatigue, i.e. Unreal Editor or Premiere PRO and the BSoD's seems to be creeping up on me. I also sometimes envy some of the new games, that I am not able to play (Doom Eternal, Shadow of the Toomb Raider etc.) My dilemma is - should I upgrade: GTX 780 TI -> RTX 2080/3080 (<-- those seems to be unavailable atm...) HDD -> NVME M.2 (with a modded UEFI being able to move OS to NVME's) 32GB -> 64GB HP LP3065 -> new 32" 144HZ monitor (i.e. Samsung Odyssey G5/G7) or should I start from fresh building a brand new RIG? I know this is highly subjective, but I am asking for your opinion - what would you do if you were in my shoes? Please help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I am in dire straits.... Regards from DK Martin Moesby

I have an Envinda X79-6M Motherboard (LGA 2011 - 0 ) and an Intel XEON E5-2690 CPU. It looks like this: https://imgur.com/a/2tYkWXX For the CPU Cooler, it comes with a plastic ring (looks a lot like AMD style) and four plastic screws. They look like this: https://imgur.com/a/upF7tXK -- I have a SYY 120MM CPU Cooling fan - ( S5-120-B ) - I bought it here: https://www.amazon.com/SYY-Heatpipes-Premium-Hydraulic-Bearing/dp/B098JHS395 The CPU cooler says it works with the LGA 2011 socket, but I see absolutely no way that this CPU Cooler will connect to the motherboard. I have no idea what is going on here. What am I missing? Do I need an AMD style CPU Cooler for this motherboard? If yes, what CPU Cooler will work with this motherboard? I am really coming up empty in my searches. Is there any way to use the SYY 120MM CPU Cooling fan - ( S5-120-B ) ?

What has your experience been? Past or present, I figure we could use a thread here to discuss these salvage boards. I have built 3 systems using x99 boards with Xeon CPUs. Two for myself, and one for a friend. They have all been "Machinist" brand boards. The first one I built was in 2020 and suffered from several known issues at the time, mainly: (1) Temp readouts were pure fiction (2) and often locked the system up attempting to read anything other than CPU/GPU (3) USB 3.0 ports were highly temperamental and would more often than not, lock the system up when used for anything more than brief data transfers. (4) Suspect VRMs (4) was easily fixed with a horizontal cooler on the CPU blowing downward and an exhaust fan out the back. (1-3) were never resolved. The board was Linux friendly and I never suffered BSoDs under Windows or issues under Linux. The one I built for a friend suffered a power surge that wiped out the PSU, but left everything else untouched (which surprised me, I hadn't expected the board to be that robust) so it was an easy fix. A testimony to the PSU more than anything I suppose. The latest Machinist board I am using, x99-k9 v2, solves all of the issues that plagued the first version. VRMs now have beefy heatsinks (and some of the x99 boards for sale even have active VRM cooling) accurate temps all around with no lockups, and USB 3.0 no longer causes hardlocks. I'm using a Xeon e5-2690 v4 CPU (14c/28t) and under benchmarks it's equal or better than my Ryzen 5 5600g system, for a fraction of the cost. As a matter of fact, the board/cpu/RAM combo set me back under 70$ during an xmas sale which was really massive bang for the buck. It comes with a m.2 nVME and m.2 NGFF SATA connector and neither (at least according to CPU-Z) interfere with the PCIe lanes of the GPU, which is nice. I understand buying these boards is still a hit n miss affair (several of them come with consumer chipsets rather than server ones, but the sellers on AliExpress have been more forthcoming about this sort of thing) and of course support is still reliant on unofficial websites, but there is a fair amount of knowledge out there. The Eastern Europeans seem to be big fans of these boards because of the bang for the buck. So, what has your experience been like?

Over the course of the past few years, my old rig from 2013 has been becoming less and less stable. For a while it wouldn't post unless I reseated every DIMM and cleared the CMOS. That evolved to only accepting two sticks, to only one, at which point my friend just needed *something* to get him through, so it lived its past two years with him working fine on just one 8gb HyperX Blu. He's now informed me it won't post at all. Until now I did no research and assumed the issue lied in a failing motherboard, as it's randomly gone corrupt a few times after normal shutdowns, but always succeeded to restore from the gigabyte dualbios backup. Recently I've come across a number of old treads discussing 3930k RAM issues, specifically some of them having very weak memory controllers and the fact that they don't seem to like ram that's over 1600mhz. I'm heading over to pick the machine up later today; it's been a while since I've seen it, so this is all from memory. The X79-UD3 only has four DIMM slots, and specified one and three for use with two sticks, so I think I figured it had some kind of dual channel compatibility... I don't know, it worked for about three years like that, reporting all 32gb before getting weird. I don't have spare desktop parts anymore, so anything I try swapping I'll have to be buying first. What are the chances the IMC finally just gave up and I have an essentially dead 3930k? Maybe I could order some old 1066 DIMMs and see what that does.. I'm going to check for cracked VRMs, bulging caps etc but otherwise I don't really know a good route for troubleshooting here. Any thoughts on this old battleaxe are much appreciated, thanks for reading -Jesse Oh wow, just realized I've never updated my Sig, and now I can't find the page to do so... those specs are accurate besides the 4.5GHz OC and 8gb kit which I swapped for a matching 16gb kit almost immediately after building.

Greetings!!! i am looking forward to build a budget 3d modelling Pc using softwares such as 3ds max, Blender, Vray and bit of animation as well.... My options available in area are hp z600 with Dual xeon x5675 (12 core 24 threads) and possibly a Rx570 4gb. Else i have an option for hp z440 with xeon e5 1650 or a similar 6 core cpu and rx 570 as these are costing me about the same in my budget.. I have been told that x58 platform lacks Avx support hence its limitations but still confused as i need my render times to be reasonable... Looking forward for you opinions thanks

I just built a pc with used parts. I have a GTX 970 EVGA, i7 3930k, gigabyte ga-x79-ud5 board. I keep getting stuck in the splash screen. I cannot enter bios. I can't boot from my USB to install windows. After leaving it, I end up stuck with a blinking white cursor in the top left of the screen. I have tried resetting CMOS, removing mobo battery, the dual bios button, every PCI-E slot for the GPU, nothing is fixing the issue. I even tried booting with an RX 580, but I could not even get video, and my keyboard lights wouldn't even turn on. The only thing I could do with the keyboard is ctrl+alt+del, which just resets the computer and nothing changes. Any advice is appreciated!

Hello. I'm going to build a new PC. I really liked the lga 2011 platform, because of the low cost of xeon. To various models of Motherboard, some dubious models. The brand that most caught my attention was Huananzhi, but there are many models of that brand (the models are listed below). I want to know the difference between these models. Benefits / harms, supports overclocking, among others. Thankful. Hey peeps, I am currently running a secondary rig with the old x79 platform. I have had the CPU at 1.35 V for 4.5 Ghz all it's life so far but I wanted some extra juice from it. When I bump the voltage up to 4.8Ghz@1.4V, the temperatures shoot up to 90C which is weird as the 1.35 V never went above 70C, and the system thermal throttles. I have the current system: i7 3930k cooled with a Noctua NHD-15 Rampage 4 extreme 32 GB dominator GT Radeon HD 7950 (trusty old card ) HX 850i I have great case airflow as well. I saw Linus' overclocking guide for x79 and he ramped the voltage all the way up to 1.55 V and was fine. Why am I overheating at 1.4V??? Funny as he used an H100i which is outperformed by my NHD-15 ~GabeN

hey peeps, i was browsing ebay recently and saw 3970x and 4960x CPUs around the same price. I currently have a 3930k and was wondering if I shoud bother upgrading at all. I kindda wanted the PCI-E 3.0 support. Don't want a 4930k as it is almost the same price as the 4960x without the X rating Please provide your 2 cents 3930k vs 3960x vs 3970x vs 4960x

CPU not running at specified voltage
LordGabeNisBae posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Hey peeps, Recently installed a predator 360 on my x79 rig and was pushing for the highest OC i could manage. 5.0Ghz flat out blue screened and froze. I have 4.9 stable but there is a bit of an issue. I have set the vCore to 1.4V but on my voltage monitoring software, I can only see the CPU running at 1.341V. Chaging the multiplier just changes the vcore even if I leave the vcore at 1.4 in the bios. 4.0Ghz -> 1.251V, 4.3Ghz-> 1.301V, 4.5Ghz-> 1.311 and 4.9Ghz-> 1.341V. It is kindda doing whatever it wants and taking my input as an overhead ceiling which is good for power consumption and heat but it is not letting me have a stable 5Ghz oc. dont know what is going on. I am pretty sure if i force the CPU to run at 1.4V I will be able to manage 5.0+ but for some reason it is doing what it pleases. I need help forcing the cpu to run at specified vCore under load.- 12 replies

Hey guys my i5 2500k is causing some problems with my video editing workflow, not enough cores and it's taking to long to render videos. I'm debating between the i7 3930K or the R5 1600. The Ryzen system will be about 110 usd more than the intel system, because I have to buy RAM for the AMD system. I do not care about power consumption. I hardly game but do do a lot of intensive work with the CPU like video editing and I also run VMs. Thanks for the help in advance.

I just got this gigabyte x79-ud3 rev 1.0 used untested (probably shouldn't have gone for it) for $50 on an auction site. I have been looking for an x79 motherboard for cheap to run some xeons that i have (e5 2695v2 and e5 2620) the 2620 v1 is supported by f16 bios and i cant find anywhere what the bios is on the board if an earlier version supports it. the socket is in good condition with no bent or missing pins and i have reflowed the board and gotten the same results before and after. what i get when i turn it on is absolutely nothing, no fans, lights or beeps. there is always a flashing light on the nic but otherwise nothing else. the xeon is known good, as well as the memory. if i plug it into a psu that has the green wire shorted to ground to keep it on it turns on and i get continuous short beeps from the mobo buzzer. i dont see any blown caps or other components or any damage to the power connectors. i have also cleared cmos as well as changed the cmos battery. anything else i can do to fix it? any suggestions are appreciated.

Hello community, I wanted to overclock my Xeon E5 1620, but as I tried changing the multiplier, it displayed everything correctly until I booted into Windows. It worked sometimes, but only in rare cases. All the other times it showed up with it's normal 3,6 - 3,8 GHZ. I know it worked sometimes, because it got better Cinebench scores and showed the correct frequency (~4GHZ). I can't seem to find why this happens.
