Budget (including currency): 600 USD Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: light gaming, video streaming and random day to day things Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc.): I have an Alienware x51, not sure if its the r1 or r2, but I am wanting to do a case swap to something that I can upgrade the graphics card to play some newer games. currently have a gtx 1050 and it plays most games reasonably well for an older system. It has 8 gigs of ram on 2 sticks. An i5-3330 @ 3.00 ghz. No idea what the motherboard is capable of hosting or if it is at its limits. I'm looking to order parts 1 or 2 at a time depending on price and availability. Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated as this is my first, moderately high end pc.

Ive been looking into buying a gtx 950 for my alien ware x51 r2 that i bought back in December of 2014. I know ew alien ware ew pre built but around black Friday I will be looking into building a new pc with a 1070. So as for my question, is my PSU powerful enough for a gtx 950? I think I have the 240W external psu for my pc but am not sure as some have 180w. As the pc will only be used for a few more months as my main computer and after for LAN parties, I dont want to have to spend more money on upgrading to the psu to the 330w unless necessary. If anyone is able to give me answers id appreciate it or any other gpu recommendations (the 950s ive been seeing are around 75-85 USD i dont want to go higher than that unless the other recommendation is more expensive but will not require a psu upgrade). Thank you and here is my current specs. gtx 745 4GB 6gb ram 1330MHz i3 4150 3.5GHz 1TB HDD 240w external psu (or 180w not sure)

Hey guys. Need urgent help here as i'm about to have a meltdown over this issue. My CPU pump for some reason is not kicking in at all on my PC. It started as an intermediate issue whereby it didn't kick in on boot and i simply removed the CPU pump fan connection and put it back on, it worked straight away, however, the problem has persisted and gotten worse and i am now at the point where I've striped the PC to the CPU, replaced the thermal paste, cleaned the fan, radiator , and removed and inspected multiple connections surrounding/ concerning the pump. When on my PC, it thinks my pump is running, but it isn't. May i also add the PC has been in transport recently to my college and back however the issue did start before that. I really don't know what to do as Dell are well.... dell, and there support isn't great at all, i cant even retrieve the most recent BIOS update for my PC cause you have to be on a Dell PC to do so. Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks! Specs if Required: GTX 960 2GB 16GB DDR4 RAM 2133Mhz Intel I7 6700K Liquid Cooled 330w power Supply 2TB Toshiba HDD 256GB Samsung SSD

Hey guys, I was looking for this info everywhere, so now I know, I want to share. All dell forums say that X51 R1 motherboard supports only few cpus from 1155 range. I wanted to fit something absolutely not intended for that mobo, that should work woth 1155 socket and h61 chipset, Xeon e3 - 1220. To my surprise, it worked! No problems at all

I recently refurbished an old Alienware X51 R2. I threw in a new 1 TB HDD with Windows 10 installed. Everything worked just fine. Brand new hard drive and OS. Today I tried to boot up the PC and the computer gets stuck at the boot screen. It shows the Alienware logo and the F2 and F12 options for Boot Setup/BIOS etc. and the loading bar but it never proceeds past this point. I cannot press F2 or F12. It will not proceed past this point no matter resets, power cycles, removing all devices from the PC... but last night it restarted multiple times with zero issues. I have had issues with this computer for years and years and years, but I was hoping this reset would fix that. Seems like it just brought about new issues. NOTE: I need to update the BIOS. Could that be the cause? If so, how can I update it while it is stuck at this screen? PLEASE HELP!

I recently upgraded my Alienware x51 R1’s Graphics card to a PNY GTX 1050ti. After installing the hardware and plugging my monitor into the drive it boots to this screen (see attached image) and then stays frozen on it, any keyboard inputs are met with clicks from the computer. The computer also makes a single periodic beep. My Computer: Its BIOS is currently at A03 (attemps to update are met with “Restart Application” error) My OS is Windows 10 Home 64bit I have an i7-3770 Processor 330w Power Supply 8GB Total RAM I have attempted to reset the BIOS/CMOS using Dell’s instructions ( http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/sln284985/how-to-perform-a-bios-or-cmos-reset-and-or-clear-the-nvram-on-your-dell-system?lang=en ) but have not been successful due to not understanding the instructions. (Keep getting confused at step 6) Have tried the “normal” way by switching one jumper to pins 2 and 3 then back, and then both jumpers when that didn’t work. I have tried just about everything I can think of except taking off the battery, although I can’t tell wether its able to be put back in place or not which is what has kept me from doing so. (Pictures of both battery and jumpers provided) My computer boots just fine when I used my previous Graphics Card. Ive been stuck on this for about 2 days now and have been unable to find anything related to my problem. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated, thank you for taking the time to read.

I am trying to move my Alienware X51 R2 motherboard in to a new case, is it possible? I have a power supply and a case. The power supply can plug in all the correct places, but I can't find the power switch pins to turn it on, I can't get it to post. Can anyone tell how to make this work or if I need to swap out the motherboard. I have the i5, GTX 960. The i5 is Hasswell.

Okay, so I have an Alienware x51 R2. Here are the specs: Windows 10 Intel 4430 @ 3.00Ghz Nvidia GTX 645 2 TB Seagate Barracuda HDD 8Gb Ram Alright, so here's my dilemma. After purchasing this computer back in 2013, the computer just cannot keep up with many of the AAA games I enjoy playing. The GTX 645 was able to keep up for a little bit, but struggles when I want to play more demanding games such as GTAV or Battlefront 3. I wanted to see if I could possibly upgrade to a GTX 960, however the problem is I only have a 240w power supply. Would this be enough to run a 960 at a stable performance, or do I have to upgrade my power supply as well? Here's the link to a 330w power supply, would this work if the 240w wouldn't?: http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=332-1432#Overview Also I find it weird how the maximum wattage on the GTX 645 is higher (130w) than the GTX 960 (120w), however I still believe the GTX 960 would have a much higher power draw. (And before I get any hate comments on a prebuilt, yes I know that building it yourself is superior, but I like the size of the case as I like in quite a small dorm, so I want to keep the same case.) Thanks, JT

My X51 came on Aug. 21st and was very happy with the whole process... I told Dell what I wanted and they made it happen...pretty good discount as well but I think it was because they were trying to push all the R2's out to make room for the r3's. My system (when purchased): i7 4790...16GB Ram...GTX 960...BluRay Drive...2TB HDD While it was being built I went and bought a Thermalright AXP-100 Muscle CPU Cooler... a Samsung 512 GB SSD Pro and a Nvidia Reference GTX 970. When the X51 arrived...I turned it on...played around a bit making sure everything was working...ran a few stability tests...recorded some temps...then shut her down and tore her open. **If you have a X51 R2 with a 330w Power Supply...you can run a GTX 970. I have benchmarked my 970 and did some overclocking with no hiccups whatsoever.** The 1st thing I tackled was the Video Card...With the reference 970 you will need to take out or replace the front intake fan with a smaller one (I think you can install other 970's without doing these steps)...and also trimmed off some of the front bezel clip. I did some research and found a forum where someone with an almost identical configuration as mine did some temp tests with the intake fan both in and out of the case and surprisingly found the temps to be slightly cooler without an intake fan in place. The reason he said (which makes sense) is that the intake fan would disrupt the airflow at the intake of the card. The air intake of the card is right where the intake fan would be on the case. Here is a pic of the Front bezel clip I trimmed...could not get the card in without doing this...the clip hit the card even when the card was seated all the way in: Here is the Card in the Sub Chassis: Pic of her all snuggled in: Next I installed the SSD...took out the 2TB Toshiba HDD and mounted the SSD in its place. I figured it would have better airflow inside the case without the Toshiba in there...may install another SSD in there or get a mSata...you can take out the WiFi card and put a mSata in its place. I was in shock when I replaced the CPU Cooler...a lot of people are looking for CPU Cooler solutions for the X51 and I think I may have found one. The Cooler I bought is a Thermalright AXP-100 Muscle edition...it is a low profile cooler and when installed gives plenty of room for the air shroud to be cut...and modified to the Cooler. I will have to cut the hole to fit the fan and then maybe add a piece to cover a gap...I did some measuring and I think I will be able to fit it in the exact same position with the fan protruding over about 1/4 to 1/2 inch...but it will still serve its purpose and exhaust air out the rear of the case just like OEM. I will post more pics when I finish the air shroud. Mounting hardware installed on Motherboard: Cooler mounted...you can see the OEM Intel cooler in the background: 100mm PWM fan is silent and wires are braided (nice touch Thermalright): Close up shot of memory clearance: Installed and runnin...you can see there is plenty of room for the shroud (after it's modified): Here are the before and after (Idle) temps...I know the important readings are the load temps and I will post those after everything is finished...both before and after temps are with side panel on...the OEM cooler readings the air shroud was on...but the Thermalright AXP-100 readings the shroud was off just circulating the air around the case...was a disadvantage without the shroud...but still demolished the OEM coolers temps. OEM Intel Cooler: Thermalright AXP-100 Muscle: **Custom Air Shroud** I was going to modify the OEM air shroud to fit the Cooler I bought...but after measuring it just wouldn't work. So I went down to the local Crafts Store and got a 20x15 inch sheet of heavy duty plastic. Took all the measurements and started cutting. This is the foundation piece I started with...cut the hole for the fins and screws: Next I cut all the side pieces...bent the ends for the angle and used plastic cement to bond them together. You will notice that I angled every side piece...reason is that it gave me more space inside the shroud: Here I trimmed the shroud to the correct height so that it would form somewhat of a seal when the side panel was put on (like the OEM shroud design): As you can see with this next pic...I left the top of the shroud open (unlike the OEM shroud)...my thinking is that since there is a vent at the top of the case...and heat rises...I would keep it open for ventilation: Here it shows how I bent the end down to allow for full use of the vent on the back of the case (just like the OEM shroud): I did a 20 min CPU stress test with Aida64...I believe this this test is comparable to Prime95's Benchmark test but I maybe wrong...What I can tell you is that the difference between the OEM Cooler and the ThermalRight Cooler are night and day...With the OEM Cooler I was reaching 78 in a matter of 8-9min...with the Thermalright...well this speaks for itself: I hope this helps some of you guys out that are looking for a cooling solution for your X51's...it worked miracles for my temps both IDLE and LOAD. Here are a few pics of my x51...love the emblem that comes with an Nvidia card:

Hey all, So my good friend came back a few days ago from a month long trip. He turned on his PC, played it for about 5 hours and then it shut down randomly without notice, causing him to abandon his Dota 2 match. I came over the next day to see what the problem was. He had it laying on it's side because someone on Yahoo Answers said that helps with cooling. The PC is an Alienware x51 desktop. As soon as I lifted it up I heard a grinding noise, and the PC crashed. I couldn't figure it out. Any ideas?

I have an Alienware X51 R2 that came with Windows 8, that means if I use Alienrespawn to create my rescue USB, every time I reset it to factory state I will need to go through all the updates and re-download Windows 8.1 I am so done with this and disappointed that Dell doesn't even provide a free all around, user friendly backup software. In case my system crashes again, can anyone suggest me how I can create a bootable drive that restores my OS to my CURRENT state, or at least windows 8.1 not 8? I've bought a 16GB USB just for this purpose, plus a 1TB external hard drive. Thx

Hey guys, I'm a bit new to the forum but not the channel. I currently own an Alienware x51 (R2) with these specs: Intel i7-4770 @ 3.4 ghz (stock cooler!) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 Ti OEM w/ 2 GB of VRAM <---- to be upgraded soon 16 GB of RAM 1 TB HDD ...and the rest of it is irrelevant. I've been thinking about "overhauling" my system's cooling performance by replacing the heat sink and several other fans around the system with Noctua offerings. I've already decided on getting Noctua 40mm A4x10 fans for replacements around the system. Now I'm split between a low profile Noctua air cooled solution or a ghetto 40mm liquid cooling solution with a Corsair H50 block and a 3rd party rad. I found a special rad for the liquid cooling solution called a "Magicool Mini II Dual 40mm Liquid Cooling Radiator." Got any advice?

So, my cousin has an Alienware X51 with the following specs: Intel Core i7 3770 8GB DDR3 256GB Samsung 840 Nvidia GT 640 1GB 230W external PSU And he wants me to do some upgrades. Specifically, GPU and maybe HDD. It's a cramped case, and while I have seen people put GTX 660s in it, I want to know what 760 will fit. Note that I will not go for a GTX 670 Direct CU Mini. Nice card and all, but it would mean a more expensive card and having to buy used. Also, will there be PCI-E 6-pin and 8-pin power connectors in there? Also, what is a good new PSU for it?

I am not sure if this is the right sub-forum for this question but mods move me if that is so. I am wanting to take everything out of my alienware x51 and put it into a Fractal Design R4 case and buy a new psu preferably 800w+ also I am going to purchase a 780ti. Thanks in advance.
