EDIT: I have "worked around" this problem by using Rufus to create a UEFI-only installation USB. Guess I'll have to rely on having 2 USBs instead of one. Well, not too bad considering I have more than enough USB sticks. Thanks everyone for your input! ___ Dear LTT forumers, I am struggling to create a bootable USB drive for the installation of Win8.1. "Wait a minute, Win8.1 is terrible and receives no support, don't install it!" - Thanks for worrying, but I have reasons which I can not disclose due to an NDA. I need to be able to install W8.1 on both UEFI and Legacy systems. Currently, I am struggling with creating it properly. I have been following this video, but my USB does not boot into UEFI mode, only in legacy. What am I doing wrong? Thanks a lot!

I've been running windows 10 on my laptop for the better half of a year now and i gotta say it's not bad (Been running it on my desktop for longer) But one thing that's still bothering me is the start key, It's still that annoying wavy theme in a circle. Does anyone know where i can replace it with a more updated cap? (I've searched eBay and amazon and found no result) Keyboard for reference:

I've recently bought a second hand computer, It has Windows 8.1 Home for its Os, I've upgraded it into Pro, the problem is everytime I restart the computer, the key always disappears and I couldn't activate Windows, I've tried slmgr /ipk, /upk, and reentering the product key in the enter key button, after that I'm able to activate windows without any problem. But After Restart, it asks to activate windows as if I didn't activate it last time, Does anyone know how to permanently activate windows, in this case?

Hi all, I have a lenovo ideatab k3011w that is stuck in Windows 8 Automated Repair loop. This is a detachable docked tablet that connects via micro USB. The current situation is this: After trying to get Windows to boot using command prompt, I restarted the tablet and now it now longer sees the drives/partitions therefore it doesn't go through the Windows recovery mode. Further more, it doesn't recognise any USB device like HDD, USB stick or USB optical drives. Please help. Thank you

Hello, I recently repaired my old Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 with Windows 8.1 Pro which I got from the company where I worked before and somehow I can't upgrade it to Windows 10 and also I can't dual-boot Debian (installed with wubi) which I installed on internal memory and also if it is installed to my SD Card. My question is if there is any 2018 method to upgrade to windows 10 Pro (I have actually an 10 Pro Retail key) and my second question is if I could somehow create an VM with Debian on it and let the Tablet boot into it over the network without needing to boot into Windows first. I actually already done something like this on my Dell thin client but this method doesn't work on this tablet, however I can boot it into Windows 10 PE if I use my USB SSD drive which is actually getting 289mb/s Read - 214,5mb/s Write on this tablet. Does anyone have an solution to my problem? I actually don't care about the connectivity issues because I have an SIM Slot in the tablet and I also have unlimited data contract

I was running Win8.1 and as I turned off my computer it installed 4 updates. When I restarted the machine it started a infinite boot loop. Using another computer running Win8.1 aswell I created a recovery drive but it failed to do any good on the failing computer. I was unable to restore the OS to a previous date, I couldn't reinstall the OS... I tried to solve this following some youtube tutorials bun non of them worked. I even tried to instal Win10 but it also went in the boot loop... The point at where I am now, realizing that I may have screwed up, is that i can't even run DBAN to wipe the drive... It shows an error message that I will attach in a moment... Please! Does anyone may have a suggestion of what I can do to resurect my computer?

Hi All... After watching the latest WAN show and hearing Luke having issues with StreamDeck and older Windows versions, I decided to whip up a quick compatibility tool for running StreamDeck on Windows7/8. Why doesn't StreamDeck work on older windows versions?: StreamDeck is built against the Visual Studio 2017 'Minimal' runtime, which includes 'Shims' for certain api calls, since this is one of the newer runtimes, it contains a few functions which aren't available on Windows 7 or 8.1 out of the box. The runtime is required when building C++/Native applications using Visual Studio. How does the compatibility tool work?: First, it requires you to download the latest MSI installer for StreamDeck from Elgato's site (https://www.elgato.com/en/gaming/downloads). Then, it bootstraps the installer to allow for it to install onto your system. After installing, it will install the Visual Studio 2013 runtime (If not already installed). Finally, the bootstrap will place 3 'Shim' dlls into the StreamDeck folder, which wrap the functions required to run StreamDeck. The 'Shims' are linked against the older runtime and provide workarounds for the various missing API calls. Notes: If you have StreamDeck 'partially installed' from a previous attempt on your older OS, uninstall it first. Extract the zip archive first before running the tool. This is currently working as of 6/16/2018, should compatibility break again, hit me up with a message. Please note that this is in no way endorsed by Elgato and in addition, is provided AS-IS with no warranty provided. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. That being said, If you do give it a go, please post your results here. I have only tested the tool on Windows 7 (64bit, which is required anyways). However I do not see any compatibility issues with 8.1 using the same method... StreamDeckCompat.zip

So recently I tried pulling up Max Payne 3 because I was bored but was struck by a problem where my game pauses at random intervals with no warning. Not just stuttering either, it pauses straight into the pause menu. After a little bit of research I found that the problem is linked to Device Manager refreshing. I looked everywhere, and no where can I find what is making it refresh or how to find it. I attached all of the current devices that are listed in case any of them are known for problems.

Hi and help my friend had his laptop ( lenovo ideapad y580) running very slowly and we couldnt fix that. so we decided to make a new windows clean install. and since then a whole lot of issues. first i tried to use windows 10 90 days nfree trial because my friend doesnt have 20 damn bucks to buy a new winkey. some failure in the iso file install wasnt running. sadness then i went to win 8.1 90days free trial. this time i got a working image and i was able to install the os aaaaaannd boot cycles.... nope, wont start. so i took out system fix cd i had flying around for win 8.1 and i went into the command window looked with diskpart at the partitions and just a recovery 400mb, a reserved 300mb, a system 99mb (!!!!!!) and the last 600 gbs of the hdd as primary partition system seemed to small so i looked at the volumes. c: was installed and had the 600gb partition as normal and still 99mb partition formated in fat32 thats the bootloader isnt it? yes it goddamn is the bootloader. went for checking into the notepad with the command line went to file and open and looked at computer, 12 gb used on the primary partiton for a to me good looking windows os and 29 mb volume with the letter x: and 2mb ! of its used. only! empty! folders! im raging as you might tell..because i dont have any clue to fix the bootloader or somehow even have one. alle the bootrec commands didnt work, because c: couldnt be added to the bootloader and as far as i know now, it would lead to nothing because the bootloader is still trash.. i really need some help because i already installed this win 8.1 evaluation software a few times and it was always the same? its still not my laptop? would like to hear some feedback to the bootloader problem itself and the reason why it keeps killing the bootloader..i know that are a lot of questions but im feeling a bit guilty by not beeing able to serve my friend with a running laptop...his stats, his stats, his only hope

My pc is freezing randomly. The only times it freezes every time are on certain websites like hbogo.com or speedtest.net. Now these freezes i originally chalked up to my overclock being a bit too much for the cpu (i overclocked from 3.1 to 4.2 ghz nothing crazy but the chip is from 2011) only problem is i underclocked and still it froze just as much. i cannot find the problem and i don't want to pay best buy or some other chain to rape my beautiful pc, so this is my plea to my master race bretheran. Here is the info from my previous thread on tomshardware, which unfortunately also had a predecessor." i will start by stating i am running windows 8.1 with suggested updates turned off. i have another thread that i tried to get help with this issue and haven't gotten much response. here is the link http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2874661/freezes-... and ill go ahead and briefly describe my problem again. Essentially everything freezes and after i reboot the system i check the windows event logs and nothing seems to show up, in fact last night i noticed a gap in the time stamps of the event logs which im assuming was the time of the freeze and me rebooting my system. i originally thought it was my fx 8120 cpu but on the other thread several people said the cpu wouldnt cause that and my lowering my clock speed did not affect the frequency of the freezes nor would i hear my fans speed up as if there were heat. the freezes are becoming more frequent and are now interrupting my gameplay in addition to my web surfing (poor me right). any help would be greatly appreciated and i apologize for not having any better information to put up front but im more than willing to work towards my own solution if possible." now the link i posted in that thread is also valid and has pictures and more detail about the issue.

So recently Windows been giving free Windows 10 upgrades along with DirectX 12 update, and I know that its still new and some software and games have some compatibility issues (In rare cases). So my questions are: 1.) Does Windows 7 and 8.1 support DirectX 12? 2.) Since I upgraded to Windows 10 and decided to revert to Windows 8.1 does my copy of Windows still valid? (After the installation of Windows 10 I accidentally deleted the files of my old os using CCleaner) I still got the installation cd of Windows 8.1. 3.) Widows 10 is free to Windows 7 also, my laptop is 4 years old now and I am wondering if upgrading to Windows 10 will have a significant performance increase or it will only have some issues? (Cortana don't support the area I am currently living though) Laptop specs: CPU: Intel Core i7 2670QM 2.20 GHz RAM: 8gb HDD: Toshiba 750gb GPU: Geforce GT 540M 2gb Thanks in advance.

So I noticed that for CS6 and above <Adobe> Windows 8 and 8.1 have some type of bug that is incompatible with the programs; as a result, you have to limit the GPU by switching it to Basic mode, which limits you severely if you go to render or perform high quality edits. Should I downgrade to Windows 7 and deal with it, or do I keep 8.1 and hope that a solution emerges from Adobe? Combine this with other bugs between other design programs and I'm not exactly sure if I should downgrade or not. Any advice would be welcome. P.S. This is a brand new build, so data or incompatibility shouldn't be an issue.

I have an Alienware X51 R2 that came with Windows 8, that means if I use Alienrespawn to create my rescue USB, every time I reset it to factory state I will need to go through all the updates and re-download Windows 8.1 I am so done with this and disappointed that Dell doesn't even provide a free all around, user friendly backup software. In case my system crashes again, can anyone suggest me how I can create a bootable drive that restores my OS to my CURRENT state, or at least windows 8.1 not 8? I've bought a 16GB USB just for this purpose, plus a 1TB external hard drive. Thx
