  1. A little note is the PC thinks the copy isnt genuine, in like, the way where you did put in the product key but it still isnt genuine. I have since gotten rid of the warnings by deleting the registry key responsible for the pop-up on startup, and the program that's responsible for removing your desktop background and showing the pop up in the bottom right corner. So, yesterday I got myself an old XP machine with Professional SP3. Everything worked beatiful. This morning, I decide to customize it some more and stuff. I install AVG, and perform a scan. It tells me some performance things that could be improved, so I let it do the trick. It did some fixing registry and stuff. I also created another user profile. After switching to it, I noticed I was locked into Windows Classic theme. I think whatever. Well, I rebooted, and the computer now boots up for 5 minutes before even getting to the user selection screen. After I choose a user, it takes at least a minute to get into the desktop, and then another 30 secs to load explorer. And now the chaos begins. The taskbar basically stopped working altogether, no longer displaying active tasks at all. Some programs cannot be run whatsoever, as after opening, nothing happens. This applies to browsers as well. I am using a TP-LINK wireless network adapter, which worked fine before this, but now it screwed up. After more testing, the taskbar disappeared altogether! Desperate, I tried going into safe mode, which didnt work at first but it worked later. Viola! Everything works like normal. I go back to normal mode, the taskbar is back, but everything is still slow and broken. I think "Maybe, the new user is the problem!". So, off to User Manager I go. Except... it's just a blank screen with the Back and Home buttons that do nothing! I'm freaking out what happened at this point. I don't at the moment have a cd big enough to fit an XP install. It managed to install drivers for my flash drive, and that is my only way of accessing this PC from elsewhere right now. Oh yeah, and also a 500MB CD. So uhh... I was trying to fix this all day and still have no freaking clue what to do. Can anyone please tell me if there is anything I can do besides literally reinstall the OS? I have tried chkdsk, it returned fine results. sfc /scannow doesn't want to work at all because it can't connect or something.

Lenovo thinkpad Sl400 Intel Core 2 duo T6670 4GB Ram 300gb WD hard drive Integrated Graphics Windows 10(was running Windows XP) Acer aspire AX3810(i don't remember the model number properly so it may be wrong) It was sitting on our store room since 6 years after the GPU died Core 2 duo(i don't know the model no but it was 32 bit or X86) 2GB ram 500gb hard disk Geforce 7800(maybe) Next of these are newer hardware Lenovo ideapad 310 Intel Core I5 7200u 8GB ram Sandisk 1tb SSD Geforce 920m Custom built AMD pc AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Msi B450 tomahawk 16GB ram GTX 1070 250GB Samsung 960 evo 2TB Seagate barracuda Custom built Intel pc(Uncle's pc) Intel core I5 8600k Asus strix Z370-E 16GB ram GT 1030? 250GB Samsung 960 evo 2X2TB Seagate barracuda Can these machines run WINDOWS XP Edit: My first Pentium 4 machine died a year ago. 7. Now you can be ugly on the inside & on the outside. Last Year Microsoft produced a rare few set of sweater with the Windows 98 Theme & made only about 100 & delivered it to otheir close fans in the twitter circle, This year Microsoft made about 250 Sweaters & is on the process of doing a giveaway to those who follows their Windows twitter account like last year , but the number of sweaters have been doubled this year. Package Contents Some Tweets of the People who received the sweater. Speaking of Ugly Clothing, Check out https://www.lttstore.com/ So There's that. I wonder if Linus will be able to get his hands on one. what do you think? 8. So, i'm here to ask for help. I want to build a PC from 2008 with only parts from around that era. I currently have some parts like a cpu, motherboard, ram, and a case that still hasn't been cleaned out since the year it broke down. The cpu is an AMD Athlon ll X4. I don't know the motherboard yet, but I know it has thing like 8 usbs, an HDMI, and sata ports. The ram is a single 2gb stick of ADATA DDR2 ram <---(Something that looks like this, but it isn't exactly this. The part number for my stick is ad2u800b2g5-drh) My case is busted up, the front panel was pulled off, but was never meant to be, so it needs to be replaced. I have an unknown IDE CD/DVD drive and an unknown IDE HDD. No psu because the past one died, and didn't bother to replace it. What i'm hoping to do is to revamp and rebuild this pc for a retro gaming pc that runs windows XP. I don't want to use a psu thats too old, because i don't trust old psus. I was thinking of getting an IDE to sata adapter for the DVD drive, but not for the HDD. I want to replace the HDD fully, that thing is OLD. The whole point of this post is to get help on recommendations for the parts. I know how a modern PC works, but not older ones.
  9. Hey folks! Newbie to the forums here, but I was having a big think about a friend's love for older Windows XP games he spent many hours on back when he was 12-13 and his dad's LAN Center (We're not even that old we promise) but Battlefield 1942 was one of his favorites and when I was building him his current PC to primarily play the newest borderlands and WoW he brought up getting 1942 to run. I told him I've tried it before but with not a whole lot of luck because of modern hardware. Here's the point of the post. I've been watching a lot of LGR in addition to Linus Tech Tips as I sit and wait for my shift to end on graveyard, and I thought to myself. "Why not just make a system around the same idea for older hardware that we can use to play with some of our other friends! The obvious hurdles to me would be the hardware compatibility. Like would XP be even able to accept a mobo and a CPU that new inside a virtual machine? Even then looking towards GPUs Would it be possible to split the resources of a single GPU? Or to have an array of older hardware that while too weak for today's titles would knock the socks off of anything pre 2010. What do you guys think about this? Any advice as I look into it? be pretty rad to have something like this and throw it inside a Dell Inspiron case or something like that *Edit: Since I would want to get a few friends who have long since moved on from regularly gaming in on this, I don't want to burden them with a PC that would be a single use machine, And I have limited closet space. hence one package
  10. hey, i am trying to help an older lady fix her 1995 dell (wxp). i got the system to work(but is almost repulsively slow), but am trying to upgrade her system with an workstation i got from my workplace. the hdd from the 1995 system is IDE, i cloned the drive to a new drive, SATA, but when i plug it into the new work station it blue screens when i try to boot to safe mode or normal. i am assuming it is a cpu driver issue or something else. i dont want to do a fresh install of window 10 for 2 reasons: they wouldn't know how use it, and dont want to lose their files. is there a way to do a fresh install of xp, and then add there users and files as if it was cloned? any insight would be greatly appreciated to me and to her.

    Help!!

I have an old 2003 HP Pavilion zx5000 running Windows XP Professional. Recently, It tried to boot and blue screened. No problem, I thought. I’ve been getting random blue screens and I’ve taught myself to ignore it. This time, I booted it up and it gave me an error saying something about lsass.exe Error. I tried safe mode, and I’ve tried putting in the XP disk, but the optical drive won’t detect it. Is there a program I can use to transport my disk to a flashdrive? Someone please let me know what I can do. Thanks! Please note that this is not my daily driver. I have this laptop because I have some old games from the XP era that I’d like play every once in a while. This laptop is also an exact one from when I was young so it means a lot to me. 58743266389__BB218AE6-AA78-42F9-A93F-F4AF5AD76459.MOV
  12. Hi Guys My friend asked me to backup his old hdd for him, and it gas windows XP on it so I thought I'd use it on my X58 system It works, but it automatically boots. It asks me to sign in, so I do. (there's only one user registered). When I sign in, it tells me I have to activate Windows. I can't do anything else. I get the activation window with 3 options: Turn off system Activate via internet Activate via phone I tried the phone method and it doesn't work. I tried the internet method and it can't establish a connection. I'm using a wifi adapter but even so I don't get any option to connect to wifi. I thought it would be a good idea to start in safe mode, but I can't get into safe mode. It says I need to use a proxy server but I have no idea how Please help me What should I do? I just want to play some old games :/
  13. I have an old IBM ThinkPad R52 running Windows XP Professional which I have been using as a spare computer. I noticed the hard drive was about to crap out as the laptop was running very slowly and the drive was making some very abnormal clicking sounds. Everything was working up until this point so I used Macrium Reflect to image the drive and bought another hard drive. Shortly after I had done this, the hard drive gave up and fully stopped working. Today I restored the image that I made of the old drive to the new one and the laptop booted up fine but was still running slower than usual. I thought that it would be a good idea to use the IBM Rescue and Recovery environment to restore the computer to its factory settings. I rebooted the PC and used F11 to boot into the recovery environment and it brought up a message which read 'Missing Operating System'. Browsing through the backup, all of the files for the recovery environment are on the hard drive but the computer cannot find them during boot. Please help!!!
  14. I'm having a problem with reinstalling Windows XP Professional 32-Bit, I need to make a bootable usb but my only viable attempt ended on a black screen with some kind of a corrupt image. I'd be very grateful if someone can provide information on where to download a Windows XP 32-Bit iso and link some kind of software that turns that into a bootable usb, also if someone knows what I should set my primary boot option as when I'll be booting from that usb please tell (I have USB-ZIP, USB-FDD, USB-HDD, USB-FLOPPY), unless it's something different. Thanks
  15. So I've recently found an old computer in my granddad's shed and he told me I can take it because it's a school computer which he got after our local school swapped them out for newer PCs. It's a Gigabyte GA-8S650GMX/Intel Celeron 2.4GHz/256Mb DDR system. The problem is that it also has the school's hard drive which only allows me to access the "student" account while "teacher" and "Administrator" are password protected, I've tried to change/delete the passwords with command prompt in safe mode and account manager but all I get is "Access Denied", I also tried resetting the Administrator password using usb drive and a few different password removing softwares but all of them require a paid licence and I don't know how to use cracks and such, I also tried to reinstall windows but all I was able to achieve is a usb install manager that's an app rather than a boot drive so I got "access denied" again. Please let me know if someone knows of any password removing software that's free or a way to make a bootable Windows XP usb (has to be 32-bit). Thanks
  16. Hello, I've recently frankensteined an old pc into a work pc, but after i bought an hdd with xp on it, installed previosly ignored updates, restarted the pc, it booted Checking NVRAM splashes a line in the top left corner and doesnt load into the os, just black screen.
  17. I'm trying to install a "fresh" copy of Windows XP Professional on a old Dell Dimension 9200, but the installation crashes (read: BSOD) when the installation files are loaded. I initially bought a 3rd party disc from a company on ebay, but they sent me the wrong disc, so I got a Windows XP Home disc with a WXPP licence code. I sent them an e-mail and asked if I could get a .iso file instead, which I got. I then used Rufus to create a bootable USB drive. The drive is detected in the BIOS and it starts the initial installation sequence, but as mentioned, it then crashes (BSOD code 0x0000007B). The SATA operation is set to RAID Autodetect / ATA. Worth mentioning is that if I try to use the installation disc, the installation does not crash, so I suspect that it has some sort of driver for Dell machines on it. Does anyone know if a special driver is required for older dell machines and does anyone know where i can find such a driver if it is required?
  18. Does anyone know what is lastest VGA + S-video graphic card on PCI-E with Windows XP driver support. I have professional machine that just working on XP, Need VGA + S-video for graphic output. Old PC have Chipset heating problems, now working with big custom made heatsink and 120mm cooler and have lot of random resets. Now working on AGP graphics ATI 9200SE, it works since I buy it new, now need replacement for next 5 years. Thanks to all for reply.
  19. Just build a new Ryzen system, and the plan was to have Windows 10 on an M2 SSD, then (as half-novelty / half-actually-useful) Windows 7, XP, and Ubuntu on an old 500GB hard drive for when I wanted to run old / otherwise incompatible with W10 software. So Windows 10's running just fine, but I've given up with everything else (mostly, I'm ashamed to say, through lack of trying). The XP Journey BSOD for ACPI support, but you can skip that. Another BSOD due to windows XP being too old to include AHCI drivers, and the motherboard being too new to support ATA mode. Read about loading drivers with a floppy drive (but only a floppy drive, not a USB floppy drive), and installing via USB with Windows Server 2003, but couldn't be bothered. I'm never going to actually use XP anyway. 0/1 The Windows 7 Journey Ryzen USB drivers aren't compatible with Windows 7 because Windows 7's so old (I'd forgotten that Windows 8 was released 6 years ago!). I do have a PS/2 keyboard to get things going, but it's 150 miles away (my words 2 months ago of "when am I ever going to need this again?" rang loud and clear in my head) Read an Anandtech article on unattended booting, but again, I couldn't be bothered. I have windows 7 on a laptop so I'm only losing some performance by not having it on the new desktop. And anyway, I'll just wait until I'm home at Christmas and grab the keyboard then. 0/2 The Ubuntu (15.04) Journey A load of error messages came up, I didn't read them. Changed some bios security things because that's always the problem with these kind of things. Nope. Same errors came up. I've been working on this for too long. Screw this, who needs Linux anyway?.... 0/3 Guess it's going to be an old Dell Optiplex that becomes the 'it won't run in W10' PC instead
  20. Hi, Trying to find a driver that will work with XP for a GTX 1050. I like to retro game and want the least possible frame dips in games. Also might install Windows 7 on a second HDD which I can find drivers for. Does anyone know if 368.81 will work with card with XP. Thats the GTX 950/950 Ti driver and back.
  21. Hi, this is my first time posting in these forums. I play a lot of games ranging from the newest to very old '90s games on PC. I'm sure most of you know that Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 all have poor compatibility with games that run on x32 bit operating systems (not to mention Windows 10's shady compatibility with DirectX9 programs). In order to combat this, I would like to set up a multi boot configuration with Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows 10 on a SATA III SSD. But there are a few things I'm unsure about, so I'll list my computer's specs and then proceed to point them out. Motherboard: ASUS Maximus Hero IX Z270 LGA1151 CPU: Intel Core I7 7700K Stock clock speeds GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 8GB Overclocked RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3600mhz Storage 1: SATA SSD of negotiable capacity (currently own a 128GB, but am going to get a bigger one, perferably 1TB) Storage 2: Seagate Ironwolf 10TB 7200RPM 256MB Cache Optical Drive: Yes Now, the first thing i'm concerned about is attempting to run Windows XP, a x32 bit operating system, with a computer with 16GB of RAM. x32 bit can only support 4GB of RAM, but i don't have a 4GB or less stick, i have two 8GB sticks. Would this stop me in my tracks right there? Or would it work, but only use up to 4GB of ram on 1 stick Is it even compatible with DDR4 RAM or Z270 mobos? Also, is Windows XP and Windows 98 even compatible with being installed on an SSD? (I avoided NVME for compatibility issues with Windows 7, though easily fixable with a patch i heard) Also, i don't know anything really, about Windows 98 and 16bit operating system compatibility or requirements. Also i have no clue if the CPU is too new and incompatible with older operating systems. i know Microsoft blocked Kaby Lake processors on Windows 7 in an effort to get more people to "update" to windows 10, but it's easily fixed with an unofficial patch (which i'm currently using) because they should work just fine with Windows 7, but MS got shady. I'd like to throw in Ubuntu if at all possible, as an added bonus. It's not a huge want, but just that. an added bonus. Also, would Windows XP and Windows 98 even support video output through DisplayPort or HDMI? Would I be better off attempting to set up Virtual Machines for XP and 98? If so, or if not, please explain. Thank you for taking the time to check out my conundrum/plan. All input is greatly appreciated!
  22. Is there anyway to run Windows 8 applications, like new Chrome and League of Legends, on a computer with Windows XP? I'm wondering for a prank to do on a friend.
  23. my old windows xp is really slow and i added like 5 GB or Virtual ram and its still slow.will linux make it faster? and is there more ways to make it faster.
  24. I recently finished a build for my grandpa, but he refuses to upgrade his windows from xp to a newer version. When i plug in his HDD to the new build in order to move the OS and programs onto the new SSD and try to boot from the HDD the computer goes into an infinite reboot loop and boots normally from a windows 10 usb. The specs are Gigabyte - GA-Z270M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard 8gb DDR4 240gb 2.5in 850 evo ssd Corsair 450W 80+ Bronze Audigy 2 sound blaster Kabylake I5 740 The Hdd is running widows xp here is the BDOS screen Any help would be appreciated
