Hello there! I am wondering if I build a NAS and load it with Windows Home Server, will I be able to backup Mac computers? Thank you for your time.

I'm currently depating on the os I want for my Nas i haven't gottent the box yet but it will be core I and I get HDD's hardware raid, and NIC's. I'm currently stuck between FreeNAS and windows home server (I can get it free.) I need to be able to stream to my ps3 and back up two computers with the least amount of space (like windows incremental back ups)

3 days ago i install Windows Home Server 2011 on my home server but i got a problem in internet connection.. I CAN'T CONNECT TO INTERNET ping to other computer (192.168.1.32) - success ping to modem (192.168.1.1) - failed ping to dns (208.67.222.222) - failed i don't know why but.. after a while i found a setting may cause the problem.. but wvwry time i restart my server it back 2 default... i mean can't connect to internet but! my windows 7 pc still connected to internet... and sometimes my server can go online but my win 7 pc cannot when i put a 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.32 192.168.1.33 all of my pc included my server can get online.. but sometimes can't this is my hub for my network management (i have no idea which brand is that and what type of that hub.. it's a 2000's hub maybe it's outdated) for my modem is ZTE ZXV10W300S (i only found NON S series) (it's come form my ISP.. ) for my server spec (maybe it's needed) intel c2d e4500 @2.7 ghz 2gb ddr2@667mhz seagate 160gb sata2 seagate 20gb ide cheap and stupid 180w psu nvidia 7300gt ddr2 512mb asus p5gc-mx/gbl i don't know how to fix it.. i need my sevrer to run 24/7 with no problem... NOTES: previously i'm using windows 7 home premium for the server OS and no problem! at all! but when i change to windows home server 2011 i got this problem.. and i want it fixed.. due to soo much features of windows home server are usefull for me... THX!

Hello! I am planning on building a Nas / Server for my house. I do a lot of video editing, do lots of Project Work [ Word, Excel etc.] ,Love to create content and have a lot of media. The thing is that lots of my data gets mixed up around the house, in the laptops, my PCs and finding them is quite hard when there are deadlines and lots of work to be done. So I thought of the Idea of having a Nas / Server in my house to centralise all of that. The Computers in my house: 1. Acer Laptop [Win xp] 2. Toshiba Laptop [Win 8] 3. Custom Built Home PC [win xp] 4. Compaq PC [Win 7] [ultimate] 5. MY GAMING RIG!!!! [Win 7] [ Home Premium ] Other Handheld devices: 1. The usual IPhone, Ipod, Ipad 2. Samsung Tab, S4 Clearly Lots of devices at home 5 computers, and 5 Handheld devices. I do have experience with PCs but not with servers, I hear they are somewhat the same when building with consumer hardware. Thats why I need your help. I did have a plan of how much storage like 2 TB just to get things going then later upgrade. I dont know whether to go with a Atx board or a Mini Itx board. If it was Itx i did see the Cooler Master Elite 120, i thought it had some potential as a server case. The processor and the Mobo is where Im stuck. For Ram i think 4 GB would be enough, and a 400w PSU. For the OS Windows Home Server 2011 seems quite nice. My budget would be around 150$, but its best to get it as cheap as possible. Nothing Fancy just a normal home server. I would like to know more about switches and add-in cards for Gigabit bit second [2 and 4] I also would like to know more about Nas' and servers, and what can be acheived besides network storage. If possible setup remote desktop control over the network. Pls Follow up as soon as possible. Thnx ! Blaze

Hi, I am looking to build my own Windows Home Server. I will be using it to solely backup my HTPC/Gaming PC. The reason i am building a Windows Home Server instead of buying a SATA Drive Bay is because its pretty much the same price and has more functionality when coming to Backup configurations etc. I would like your opinions on the components i have chosen. I have taken into consideration power efficiency as well as price and size. Case: BitFenix ​​Prodigy Mini-ITX (£70) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H61N-D2V (£44) CPU: Intel Celeron G550T (£34) RAM: Kingston 2GB DDR3 1066MHz (£15) PSU: Casecom 350W (£11) Which total to: £174 Similar to any 4 Drive Bay NAS Obviously i will be needing HDDs. I am thinking something along the lines of 4 Western Digital WD20EZRX 2TB Green's. All of your opinions are welcome. I am open to suggestions. Thanks.

TLDR: Will Windows Home Server 2011 erase my HDDs if I connect any hard drives that already have data on them? First time posting and a bit of a noob. And yes I did google it first. I couldnt find any satisfactory answers. Please help So heres the whole story: a couple of years ago, I moved to another country and wanting to bring all my data with me, i stripped the seven WD My Books I had for data storage and stuck them inside my PC Case for easy transport. Two years later, my data storage requirements have significantly increased, though i still need to go back to the internal HDDs that used to be MyBooks. Plugging in each and every HDD separately with a USB adapter is a massive pain, as is populating the drives on the main rig 'cause my bios will just sit there trying to detect the hard drives (dont ask...the motherboard was a bad buy as far as modding the specs was concerned). So finally decided to build a home server for file sharing etc and I wanted to ask if anyone here has been in a similar situation and used WHS 2011 as a solution. I know that WHS uses some sort of elvish magic to show all logical partitions under the same drive letter, which is mainly why i want to use WHS instead of a Linux box or something and I was wondering if this process would destroy my data if i tried to populate HDDs that are already filled. Oh, and please, kindly refrain from providing NAS or any other solutions involving RAID. I WANT TO KEEP THE DATA I HAVE RIGHT NOW. So RAID is not an option for me. Most of the data is not THAT important, though i would rather not delete it if i could avoid it. I basically look at RAID as wasted space. (I hoard data. Its a problem. I'm aware. Stop looking at me like i'm crazy ) I am still in the planning stages of this build, so I would greatly appreciate any input on the hardware as well as the software including the OS. So far the build specs in my head looks like this: Processor : intel Core 2 Duo or similarly performing processor (i can get em cheap) Any compatible Asus/Gigabyte motherboard (i can get em cheap) 2x2 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM (cuz i have spare ones) one, possibly two, PCI SATA expansion card total of seven WD Caviar Green drives for mass storage (numbers will probably increase soon) single WD blue drive for OS 450 watt PSU (air)cooling optimized case Windows Home Server 2011 I will be running the server headless and maintaining it remotely Thanks in advance LTT community

I am planning to build a home server soon. I still can't decide between a Windows Home Server or a Linux-based one (Ubuntu maybe?). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

So I just built my windows home server pc with an asus mini itx mobo, an intel pentium, and 4 2 tb hard drives in raid 10, I also have a 64 gb ssd as a boot drive. I am using an external optical drive and i know its working with my mobo. For some reason, the installation process never gets past choosing the drives. I have no idea what the issue is. I could use some help please.

So, I have a storage server that's being a bit of a pain right now. I just finished properly setting it up. A couple of days ago it was working fine - backups were more or less working (I was sorting out one other issue), and shared folders were accessible to every client that connected to it. Yesterday, I tried to copy some new stuff to it from my main workstation and discovered that it's offline. I go down and check on it and find some kind of strange issue with connectivity. Relevant specs: Intel Gigabit VT Quad Port Server Adapter Windows Home Server 2011, fully updated HP Procurve 1800-24G managed switch Linksys E2500 wifi router The 4 ports of the quad card are teamed to the switch, which links everything else in the house. The Linksys router is also connected to the switch, and it connects to the modem to act as the internet gateway and DHCP server for the network. Symptoms: The clients do not see the server at all, either from the "Launchpad" or by any other method (web browser, RDC, attempts to access shared folders). The Launchpad simply states that "The server is offline". Helpful. The server can see some things on the network - the printer, for example - but NOT the router or switch (sometimes a client shows up but there's no connectivity to anything) The server has no Internet access through the switch The DHCP client list in the router DOES list the server, so it IS connected (I know, I know, I need to give it a static IP... that was on the to-do list) Internet access was achieved by connecting the onboard ethernet from the server to the switch, didn't test any other functionality this way though Things I tried: Disconnect and re-connect client machines (via uninstall/reinstall of Connector) Power cycle router Power cycle switch Factory reset switch Complete uninstall/reinstall of drivers and software for the quad-port card, recreating the team from scratch (at this point, the onboard LAN connection also disappeared from the available network connections... ?!?) ... help?
