  1. I'm unable to re-enable Windows Defender given the error of "Threat service has stopped restart it now." (and when i attempt to restart, it stalls and then gives error prompt) and sometimes "Page not available, Your IT Administrator has limited access to some areas of this app..." I have exhausted all Google searches and YouTube tutorials and am unsure where to go from here, seems it's common for a third party anti-virus service to disable Windows Defender but i have not used a anti-virus service since 2013. There is no other Windows devices on my network only mobile devices, my router/dns does not seem to be tampered with, Windows is fully updated, drivers updated, newest bios. I encountered this problem 3 days ago and since then i have; Clean installed windows twice, Cleared CMOS, regedit DisableAntiSpyware set to 0, Installed Malwarebytes after this issue and performed a full scan(0 results), Glanced through task manager, used my extremely limited knowledge in Wireshark and failed to find anything. I'm not sure what to do and if someone can help me out i'd appreciate it alot. It's kinda uneasy being unable to determine whether i have some sort of malware or this is a Windows "bug" Not sure if this will be helpful but, Quick scroll through task manager, https://streamable.com/orv6d Windows home 3700x Asus 2080 Asus Prime x470 pro x2 Sata 512gb ssd
  2. I have been trying to look up how to fix this and i haven't had any luck. Any solutions?
  3. Everytime I try to open some software and install anything, the Virus and threat protection system starts acting weird and blocks me. I can't install rockstar launcher because of this issue. This started from the day I suddenly found Norton Security app in my list of programmes. I uninstalled it immediately because I had never installed it. And this uninstallation process was really weird too. After uninstalled, it immediately restarted PC and upon restarting, it shows a really weird looking screen. Will post here in comments. And after restart, I went into windows defender settings and improved the settings and might have accidentally added some folders into the protected list to prevent editing by someone else. It has been now 2-4 weeks since then and now I have many error popping up saying that found and all. It's blocking my RGB fusion software. I don't care about it, then it's blocking Adobe Premiere pro, but still opens it. Now I'm trying to install rockstar launcher, completely blocking it. I can't find this settings, please guide me.
  4. So, I have two machines. My 7 year old Gaming PC, running windows 8.1, and a bottom of the barrel, nearly ewaste, super low-end laptop, which I purchased for two reasons: It was extremely cheap brand new, and it functioned as a mobile computer for logging, reflashing, and overall tuning a car using a USB to OBDII adapter (that adapter is a rant for another day! Hoooo boy...). I originally had a used Dell Optiplex with a core i5 2400 and a super old graphics card, however, that machine died recently due to PSU failure. The PSU replacement costs more than the machine cost me used, so I've recycled it (again). So, my crappy laptop got an automatic nomination for youtube/netflix/VRV duties (it's how I get my LTT and Tech Jesus fixes... And JayzWaterCoolingNonSense as well). I fail to understand the basic concepts behind the security, software update, and overall human to software processes that Microsoft has for Win 10. Automatic updates that have possibly bricked machines in the past, 'security' that is just not 'secure', and even just the ridiculous process to get to settings, it's just so frustrating. I recently upgraded my gaming machine from a Haswell i5 4440 to a Xeon E3 1280V3, and was having some issues getting all-core turbo and base clock to work how I wanted, and someone suggested I try ThrottleStop to change some settings... Since this program appears to be aimed at Laptop users, and I have a laptop, I figured I'd get it installed there as well, and maybe undervolt, tweak, etc., the laptop and get better battery out of it if the power fails, or whatever. So, I go to install it... And Windows Defender SmartScreen blocks it. No option to bypass on the blocked screen. Why? What is the point of this? I literally went on google and found instructions to disable smartscreen outright. Microsoft's security apparatus to 'protect' my laptop is now completely disabled, and I have zero intention of re-enabling it. I'm tempted to leave Windows Defender permanently disabled as well. So, what is the intention of this kind of 'security' coding? Is it to keep, uh... the 'Less Tech Savvy' people from installing 'lolthisnotavirus.exe', or what? Any time I see a prompt that says 'F*** You! You cannot install this ever!' pop up on my PC, I immediately go find a way to disable that. It completely defeats the purpose of the code in the first place. I guess I'm just entirely failing to see the purpose of this kind of code, except to aggravate me and waste my time. Plus, Windows 8.1 doesn't have this kind of garbageware on it, just regular old Windows Defender, which for the most part, I just leave alone. I've been considering upgrading (downgrading?) my gaming rig to Windows 10 Pro, as well as getting a newer laptop along with an upgrade for it to Win 10 Pro (I actually would be using the remote desktop features of the Pro version), but having used Win 10 for the last 3 years alongside Win 8.1, I really do prefer the ease of use, simpler, easier settings, and overall experience of Win 8.1 over Win 10. Finding a setting is fast and easy in Win 8.1, but takes me websearching to find in Win 10. My laptop is 'convertible', with a fold flat keyboard so it can be used as a tablet, and it does have a touch screen (yeah, when I said it was cheap, it's a $200 brand new convertible laptop/tablet, so it's super duper bottom of the barrel), and again, I really, really, REALLY did NOT like the tablet mode for Win 10. Having no reasonable way to get to your desktop to find something just because you put your machine in tablet mode just about got me to throw this thing out the window. Indeed, I was considering a upgrade to Linux on my old Optiplex, however, I am NOT Linux savvy (sorry Anthony), and figuring out how to do a fileserver for a low end PC like that is just beyond me. I also have had some negative experiences with older versions of Linux, like going to bed one night, and waking up the next morning to find half the OS is just gone (I wasn't the only one that had this issue. A friend of mine had the same issue at around the same time, maybe 2 months later, and she is an amazing Linux nerd). Since the Optiplex died, it's a moot point anyway... At least with Linux, if I wanted to brick my machine by installing 'wtfnotavirus.rpm', I could do so anyway. PS: The laptop pretty much only does basic google searches (looking for guides for games, like Borderlands), has a Youtube window open, and that's pretty much it. I actually run out of RAM and my browser crashes if I try loading up Netflix, and I generally don't run software I don't trust, plus I use Opera (switching back to FireFox soon), with uBlock, so I'm really not worried about hostile software invading my laptop. Plus, it has a Pentium Silver N5000 CPU, and 4GB of RAM. I just don't have the spare resources to let Microsoft's useless garbageware run and suck up precious CPU cycles. Opening Youtube in a single tab in a single browser window pegs this thing at 80% Memory usage, opening a second window puts Youtube into virtual memory, and it just chugs like a mofo. Maybe it's time for me to get a Razer Blade Stealth?
  5. Hi, I recently bought a camera that doesn't need software apparently and it doesn't seem to work on any program i run, only the microphone. I checked if I needed to update windows but it keep loading and loading but nothing ever happens, also my windows defender is unable to turn on but I don't have any other antivirus on my PC. Im running on a windows 10 trial version and the version is 1809. Just came from microsoft tech support because about 30 people viewed but no one replied... Specs: Ryzen 5 2600 CPU 2x8Gb 3200mhz of ram GTX 1070 Aorus GPU 8Gb of VRAM
  6. In the past few weeks I've noticed that sometimes my PC will slow down, when checking task manager I noticed that some things were casing my CPU to use 100% of its power. The culprits are; Antimalware Service Executable, System interupts and Microsoft Compatability Telemetry. These all cause my cpu to ramp up to 100% for roughly 5 mins before dying down. Windows defender doesn't detect any malware or viruses, I've only downloaded off of legitimate websites with the lock symbol in the top. It never used to happen in the past 2 years of owning. I am on windows 10 Pro version 1909. Does anyone know a solution, is it common or do I have to just wait for an update to fix the problem???
  7. windows defender Protection History is crashing every time i want to see my protection history and to allow some devices , how can i resolve that ????
  8. I wanted to open my windows defender and perform a full scan but its blank. Please help.
  9. Hello to all the cpmmunity. Greetings from Greece. Hope you're all good. My message is about a question for the Windows defender and Windows keys from eBay. I bought a Windows 10 Pro key from eBay and it's all good. But the last month I noticed that I don't have the windows Defender active. I mean there is no icon in the icons panel and when I open "Windows Security" I see a blank page. Also I'm using "RevoUninstaller" to clean some of the Windows background apps cause I really don't need them and they EAT my PC with no reason. Do I really need the Windows Defender? Is it a problem cause I bought the key from E bay? Did I do anything while using RevoUninstaller? Anyway Thank you very much guys. Linus I believe you can be more cringe than this....don't disappoint us (just kidding). All the love from Greece.
  10. Just completed a pc build and I have Windows 10 (Home 64-bit) everything ran great, still does except for one thing. Windows Defender seems to be constantly running. Go to task manager and its running at 6-7%. I have Corsair iCUE software and my total core package is running at 35-36 degrees celsius. It use to run at 27-28. Fans run for quite awhile before shutting off, I have Norton Anti virus software and it has been working great. Ever since I did the new Windows 10 update now my fans are running at high levels and Windows Defender is running most of the time. Can I shut it off as long as I have Norton running? If so how do you do it? Any ideas what's happening here? Thanks for reading, hope I can get some clarity here. I am not a gamer, I do real estate photography and use Lr & Ps in my work. I also don't surf the web and open up sites I don't know, no porn either.
  11. So I have recently ran into a problem activating memory integrity for Windows 10. For one reason or another I had disabled it, and when I went to reactivate it, I was informed by a wonderfully vague notification that I have some form of incompatibility. I do not believe this to be the case, since I had been running it before with no issue. I was wondering if anyone had a solution for this? I can't seem to figure out whats wrong. I run a Gigabyte Aorus Gaming K5 ax370 with a Ryzen 1600x. Virtualization and fTPM both are on.
  12. Hello, Some years ago we had a teacher in college that explained to us that most machines connected to the internet after many years of use by "amateurs" will get infected vy a virus in some way or another. At the time, this seemed reasonable so I've been thinking this way and everything seems fine. When I updated to windows 10 I started using just windows defender as antivirus protection since that is what I was told I should do. My question is: Am I wrong? I feel like most people I know think as I do... If this is naive or outdated I'd like to know and I can't find much information about it. And even when I do, it's very technical and confusing to explain to others to verify it.... I'm currently using Windows 10 with everything up to date. I checked on windows defender and I ran the most in depth scan available in the app. It says No threats. Is this reliable or my pc might be infected with all kinds of stuff that WD just can't detect? Any information will be appreciated but keep in mind that I work in video and my background knowledge in this topic is very poor... Thanks!
  13. [This is my post moved from Programs, Apps and Websites] Hi, I started a Full Scan on Windows Defender and after 5 minutes it stops at about 2801452 items scanned. My laptop gets stuck and I can't do anything (even opening the Start Menu with Windows Key is a pain). Can someone help me ? Btw it does the same for Custom Scan... Thx P.S.: I won't be able to provide screenshots because everything is blocked, obviously.
  14. So I just built a new Pc, I went and booted up Microsoft edge and I got a pop up saying I had a virus, I was confused as to all I’ve done is browsed and played games on steam, watched YouTube and went on amazon. I immediately went to windows defender and it says there is nothing wrong. This is my first Pc as I used to be a Mac user and I’m not sure what to do or what to believe in this situation. What should I do?
  15. i noticed that my cpu would not down clock and would run at max turbo even at idle. A quick look in windows 10 task manager revealed that i had a constant write on my C: drive (SSD) of about 25 MB/s. Even at idle with no applications open for hours on end. turns out windows defender was constantly writing to c:/windows/logs and running about 15% CPU usage. after disabling windows defender anti-malware via gpedit.msc, my cpu now down clocks, while idle, my ssd sees much less activity and my cinebench score moved from 630 to 733. Is this a fluke on my PC or is it something that may be affecting others without them noticing. over the pass month ive had over 2 terabytes of data written to my ssd. My setup: i7-2600 @4.07ghz, 16gb, gtx 970, corsair neutron xt (SSD)
  16. I somehow got malware on my pc. not sure how as I don't remember downloading anything suspicious. anyway, windows defender picked it up in a quick scan and says its been quarantined. im now doing a full scan to make sure I havnt missed anything else. my question is, do I have to do anything else? the things been quarantined, do I need to delete it, or will windows handle that for me? windows defender dosnt make it very clear, so id appreciate some clarification.
  17. So I was wondering what everyone's opinions are on the top antivirus this year? I know Windows Defender is pretty good on Windows 10 (I'm running Windows 8.1 atm) although the UI sucks imo, Kaspersky is supposed to be good but they've been under fire for having shady monitoring practices (whether these are true or not I'm not sure) and all google searches state that Bit Defender is the top one atm, but I found that it caused my games to crash more often than not. I've been looking at AVG, the UI looks clean and it's been around for a long time. But anyway, what do you guys use and which ones would you recommend?
  18. Hi , last monday i got a flash drive back from a coworker, he was supposed to look at some .stl files i gave him on the drive. when i plugged it back to access it, File explorer instantly became glitchy... long to load and wasn'T able to see anything on the drive. looked at task manager and 100% cpu usage (G3258@4.3GHz) however nvidia backend was massively contributing at like 60%average Windows (10) notified me that the securyty might have been at risk so i enabled windows defender.. did a scan and it found this . after a quick google, i found out these might be used by people with non genuine windows versions activated.. but i have a genuine windows licence so WTF is it doing there . Windows Defender on the other hand cant seem to be able to get rid of it... i ran a complete scan every single days of this week and ordered defender to remove the files. even after it says it have successfully removed the files, when i rescan the pc it still find the same files exactly at the same place ... so should i use some AV with a time trial to get rid of the nasties and then back up my games on the second hard drive to finally reinstall Win10?
  19. Emagherd, mAH Pryvasey is en dengaar! Scarewares, Nobody likes em , once you get to know how the cycle works, but to those who are just getting in to the whole Digital thing as a new thing , like old non-tech savvy folks & younger eager minded guys & gals who want to keep their pc safe by grabbing everything that offers them safety for free without cutting a hole through their pocket. Most of the folks tend to steer clear of premium apps & software to begin with as most are based on yearly subscription & have payment & uneasy activation hurdles to go through to get a pure offered service, Many software providing sites that offer free software that does so under the guise of having the best ratings & offers sorta click baity software's that later turn into a nightmare for users. Now Microsoft Windows Defender Research team announced that starting March Windows Defender will start removing software that has “coercive messages” or “misleading content to pressure you into paying for additional services or performing superfluous actions.” they grew up so fast , :') , seems just yesterday it was letting in coin miners & trojans in like old pals From February 2016 microsoft required cleaner and optimizer programs that purport to clean up systems and optimize performance to provide customers with detailed information about what purportedly needs to be fixed. This requirement aims to protect customers from programs that present aggregate “error” results with no specific details, without providing customers with the ability to assess and validate the so-called errors. Additional criteria that will trigger the removal include notices that the paid offer will expire in a limited time, or that no other errors (such as an antivirus program) will clean up the problems. In short, vendors that use scare tactics to get you to install, pay for, and use their system utilities will now have to be very careful about how they advertise, least Microsoft deem their products unwanted software and flag the applications for removal. In particular, Microsoft says, the rules will be aimed at killing off the dubious claims made by filesystem and Registry "cleaner" apps that try to charge users for performing routine or unnecessary tasks. For software developer who are worried about this issue & want to validate the detection of their programs can visit the Windows Defender Security Intelligence portal & upload their file for review. it's kinda like those phony microsoft team phone calls to your doorstep, applications that offer to scan your Windows PC for free, and then conveniently claim your computer is under attack by viruses, or has serious defects, and that the only way to save your files is to fork out fifty bucks for a magic cleanup tool. Rarely legit companies use scaretactics as marketing tool, but it has happened, Back in 2010 users of the free ZoneAlarm firewall version were presented with a pop-up "Global Virus Alert" notification about the trojan "ZeuS.Zbot.aoaq." The scary pop-up declares that your PC may be in danger! The high risk threat states that "ZeuS.Zbot.aoaq is a new Trojan virus had been found that steals banking passwords and financial account data. Basic protection to your computer is provided by Your ZoneAlarm Free Firewall, but this new threat requires additional security." The users were then redirected to their site to buy link for their premium software. Blog post was made by Barak Shein from Windows Defender Security Research team , So what are your thoughts on this? pretty bold move if you ask me but it could hinder legit software marketing that offer true protection which Microsoft might play a bias onto & ignore it because of that, but it's a welcoming sight to see the basic offered protection from within can carryout this important task to those who don't rely on a third party application to do so. please post Your thoughts & comments down below. 20. So the only anti-virus type thing that i have is Windows Defender, and I don't know if it's really any good. I keep it updated, it actually updated not even 30 minutes ago from the time of this post.
  21. I can't turn on Windows Defender no matter what i've tried. I deinstalled Spybot, used Malwarebytes cleaning tool (which was installed a long time ago) and cleaned the registry of unused entries. Also tried enabling it through the registry by changing ownership to Administrators and setting the turn off hex value from 1 to 0. But nothing works, it still says "Some settings are managed by your organization" and I can't do anything. And I know it disables when another antivirus is installed but everything is uninstalled now. Anyone else have experience with this?
  22. Hello! So, I wanted to ask if Windows Defender is good enough these days? How does it compare with other free antivirus softwares? Thanks in advance!
  23. Hi! So the title says it all what's the best antivirus program? I'm currently using ad-aware but I was thinking about other possibilities. Free antivirus*
  24. On the MSI GS63VR it came pre-installed with Norton. I deleted Norton and I tried to turn on Windows Defender. When I tried to turn on Windows Defender it pops up with programs & features from the control panel. In Windows Defender it says real-time protection is handled by another AV program. I don't even have Norton. It also says that Windows Defender is off because I have an existing AV program and that it wants me to uninstall the existing AV program to turn on Windows Defender. If anyone can give me help, thanks.
  25. Honestly though, how? Such a simple task that Windows just basically ruined in another crap update. Every site I've gone to including Microsoft says go to the history tab but ever since one of these new updates, they completely redone Windows Defender and the history tab is gone. I don't even know what version I'm on. Please help.
