So I have been trying to get an old Windows 98 PC up and running. Long story short, it turns out my Caesar III cd install replaces a Windows file oleaut32.dll which the NVIDIA graphics driver is looking for. So I need to somehow get the original oleaut32.dll file back or replace it again with one that won't cause issues with the NVIDIA graphics driver. forum post about this issue: https://www.techsupportforum.com/threads/found-fix-for-nvcpl-dll-error.34052/ potential oleaut32.dll file, but not sure if its safe or how to replace the file on my PC: https://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-files_new.php/dllfiles/O/OLEAUT32.DLL/5.1.2600.2180/download.html

Firstly, I want to address that it is not my intention to promote or facilitate the piracy of any software. However, I believe that Windows 98 is a bit of a special case, since you can't buy it new, therefore the developers aren't making money off of it anyway. My question is about the product code and how to find it. I used an ISO from Internet Archive, didn't expect to have to enter a product code. None of the ones I found online worked, so I assume that the product code is disk-specific and is stored somewhere on the install CD? If so, where could I find that file? (I could just flash the OS to the boot drive, but I want to properly install it the way it was meant to be done. Mostly. Sort of.) Thank you!

I saw the episode where they emulated Windows 98. I tried it myself but I couldn't figure it out. Anyone know a good tutorial I can use? I just want a way to run old games that I have ISOs/CDs/DVDs for.

Hi everyone, I've asked this question before but I thought I'd try my luck again. My dad's home office is a varied Window OS environment. 1 x Windows 98 machine, 2 x Windows XP machines, and 1 x Windows 10 machine. Has anyone had luck networking old and new OS's to a dedicated file server? He currently just transfers data with USB or emails stuff to himself. The old computers can't see the modern computers in Network places. I wanted to set up a dedicated file server for him. I know upgrading is a thought, but he's trained on an ancient piece of software for his work that runs on Windows 98, and he refuses to learn the modern version (CAD blueprinting software). He's extremely stubborn about that. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Man am I confused on this one... Recently, I brought life back to an old windows 98 desktop. It didn't work before so I reinstalled Windows 98 and it worked. The only problem was getting files off of it. Issues: - IDE to SATA adapter won't recognize old HDD (but the HDD works on the old computer?) - Windows 98 does not work with new flash drives (drivers) - The old computer won't recognize the two functioning CD-ROM's connected (drivers?) - Still runs Dial-up so the internet won't be available All I need to do is remove my documents! It's only 350MB and It's taken me a week to get them off! I know I need drivers, but I can not find a way to get them onto the system! Any and all help is appreciated - Ethan

Hello all, I have Windows 98 SE installed in a VM on VMware Workstation 12 Pro (installed 98 for nostalgia, I actually have VMware for some Linux work) and I've been going through and installing old games that I played on Win 9x back in the day. I got around to Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and installed it with no problems. However, when I go to open it, I get an error stating that it requires Dx 7.0 or later to run. I already had Dx 9.0c (the Dec 2006 release; the most recent available for 98) and assumed it was too new for the game. So I installed DX 7. Still got the error. I then tried DX 8 to no avail. DX 7.0a wouldn't let me install because it recognized the DX 8 install. I knew when I installed 98 SE in VMware that the gaming support wasn't too good but everything else has been relatively smooth sailing. What do I need to try? Thanks EDIT 1: Testing an extension and accidentally posted this with a bunch of "B" emojis.

I have a super old IBM thinkpad running Windows 98 that I use to play Starcraft, Empire Earth, and other stuff. Out of curiosity, I enabled the 2 color mode to see what it would look like. However, it wont let me go back, and now I'm stuck in 2 color mode. When I set it back to 16 color mode, it asks to restart, but when it restarts it's still in 2 color mode. Any ideas?

Here's the backstory: my friends and I are planning on doing a Windows 98 LAN party with bare metal installs of the operating system. The rules: Get closest to period-correct you can get while spending the least amount of money No virtual machines; virtual machines are for cowards Bonus points if your hard drive fails during the LAN party. I have a Compaq Presario V2000 with 1.5 GB of RAM (I limited it to 512 MB in system.ini), a 1.8 GHz AMD Turion, an 80 GB IDE hard drive, an IDE CD drive, a 1280x768 display, and an ATI Radeon Xpress 200m 128 mb. I got this for free, and it came out in 2005. So far I'm in pretty good standing. Problem: I can only run in 640x480 with 16 colors and 64 KB of memory and Windows 98 only recognizes it as Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) Anyone have any solutions that don't involve "run a virtual machine?" Or do I need to start over? I'm 22 and have almost zero TRUE experience with Windows 98, though I do know some DOS commands and I know how to edit stuff in DOS.

So I'm wanting to build a retro machine, kind of like what Lazy Game Reviews has with the Lazy Green Machine and the Megalinium Monster, but I'm not sure where to properly start, like I have a few clues as to good older hardware like the Voodoo cards that seem to be pretty good and hold up well in the modern day, but what are some other good brands and things I will absolutely need? I'd also love it if I didn't have to like buy a new monitor to go along with said machine. I'm just in the pre-planning stages so budget is questionable at the moment. Also What are some thing to be aware of or avoid? Should Probably Give More Detail about what I'm hoping to run and play on it: So I'm looking to play games on the spectrum from Commander Keen to POD(I think that's what it's called) to the original NFS games and maybe if possible the old Hot Wheels FMV type games. I'm looking to have a Disc Drive, a 3.5in Floppy Drive, a 5.25 Floppy Drive, I'd also like a halfway decent sound card if someone can recommend one.

No, I don't still use Windows XP or something, I use Windows 10, to get that out of the way. BUT I was wondering if anyone has made custom software to either make custom drivers for Windows XP or older, or just trick the drivers to think it is Windows 10. I just was wondering for an experiment if I could somehow get my GTX 1060 to work with Windows XP, and maybe even windows 98. The box clearly reads windows 7, 8 and 10. I know this is a long shot question. Thanks!

I've got Windows 98 SE running on a Dell Dimension B110 I'm trying to install drivers for the Intel 865G chipset, but when I try to run the installer I get two error messages: The INF_ALLOS_8.3.1.1009_PV_INTEL.EXE file is linked to missing export SHELL32.DLL:SHCreateDirectoryExA A Device attached to the system is not functioning. I've verified that there is a Shell32.DLL in the system folder, and I have tried running the built in registry fixer as well

I have a Compaq Presario 5452 with standard integrated graphics. I am looking to upgrade the GPU because one of the few games I have for it is running quite slow. The game requires a Pentium at 166Mhz or higher, which I think a Celeron at 466Mhz should be good enough for, 32mb of ram (I have 256MB), and a DirectX compatible video card capable of displaying 16 bit graphics with a minimum of 2MB of ram (I'm looking for something at least 32MB) and it says "Direct 3D hardware accelerator card recommended." Which I don't know what that is but I would like to get it. if the CPU isn't good enough, what are some good cheap ones that'll be capable of handling it. Budget of the graphics card is around $15. If the CPU isn't good enough, my budget for that is $10. So $25 in total. Obviously I would like to get the cheapest available option that can run it smoothly.

Being born in the distant past of '92 I sure do miss the blockier and simpler look of Windows 98. If only Classic Theme wasn't removed from Windows 10 I'd be able to get the true old experience of it, there are some work arounds, but nothing seems to match the true golden look. Maybe I should buy a crt.

So I re assembled an old laptop from '98 with Windows 98 on it and it's telling me I need a boot disk, so how can I make one? I have a few floppy drives around and a couple floppy writers around, and then the meme PC I could do shit with that from but I have absolutely no idea about this part of computer history seeing as I was about negative two years old when this laptop was made the meme pc has no OS but I can get Linux Mint on it or Windows 10 if I get it to boot. Thanks for any help here

Hi, this is my first time posting in these forums. I play a lot of games ranging from the newest to very old '90s games on PC. I'm sure most of you know that Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 all have poor compatibility with games that run on x32 bit operating systems (not to mention Windows 10's shady compatibility with DirectX9 programs). In order to combat this, I would like to set up a multi boot configuration with Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows 10 on a SATA III SSD. But there are a few things I'm unsure about, so I'll list my computer's specs and then proceed to point them out. Motherboard: ASUS Maximus Hero IX Z270 LGA1151 CPU: Intel Core I7 7700K Stock clock speeds GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 8GB Overclocked RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3600mhz Storage 1: SATA SSD of negotiable capacity (currently own a 128GB, but am going to get a bigger one, perferably 1TB) Storage 2: Seagate Ironwolf 10TB 7200RPM 256MB Cache Optical Drive: Yes Now, the first thing i'm concerned about is attempting to run Windows XP, a x32 bit operating system, with a computer with 16GB of RAM. x32 bit can only support 4GB of RAM, but i don't have a 4GB or less stick, i have two 8GB sticks. Would this stop me in my tracks right there? Or would it work, but only use up to 4GB of ram on 1 stick Is it even compatible with DDR4 RAM or Z270 mobos? Also, is Windows XP and Windows 98 even compatible with being installed on an SSD? (I avoided NVME for compatibility issues with Windows 7, though easily fixable with a patch i heard) Also, i don't know anything really, about Windows 98 and 16bit operating system compatibility or requirements. Also i have no clue if the CPU is too new and incompatible with older operating systems. i know Microsoft blocked Kaby Lake processors on Windows 7 in an effort to get more people to "update" to windows 10, but it's easily fixed with an unofficial patch (which i'm currently using) because they should work just fine with Windows 7, but MS got shady. I'd like to throw in Ubuntu if at all possible, as an added bonus. It's not a huge want, but just that. an added bonus. Also, would Windows XP and Windows 98 even support video output through DisplayPort or HDMI? Would I be better off attempting to set up Virtual Machines for XP and 98? If so, or if not, please explain. Thank you for taking the time to check out my conundrum/plan. All input is greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone, Can you network Windows 98 and Windows 10? My dad runs ancient software for work and has four computers he needs on his network. Two computers running Windows 98, one computer running Windows XP, and one computer running Windows 10. However, one of the Windows 98 machines says "This request is not supported by the network" when trying to access the Windows 10 machine through the network. Any tips? I know it is your burning desire to advise him to upgrade, but you don't realize how much of an enormous pain in the ass he is, and that he will never change. I've tried for years. He refuses to learn the work software newer than the one supported by Windows 98. Thanks for any help in advance.

I have been modifying my setup software to look a lot more retro and have been replacing icons, screensavers and sounds with that of older OSes (my favourites are Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows ME, and I use some Windows 95C material). Changing the icons of shortcuts and specific folders is easy, but what I would like to do is change the default icons, such as the default folder icon and the icons for drives. I understand that with a [autorun] type script you can change the icon of a drive to look a certain way, but I would like a dynamic icon so that when a network drive is online or not it shows a custom icon for each, and I'd like the default folder icon to be exactly like in Windows 98. Any advice would be much appreciated. Edit: here is an example of my progress thus far, as you can see I have changed some icons but there is still a long way to go. I also have the starfield screensaver which looks amazing on 3 screens (albeit of different proportions). http://extrazoom.com/image-66466.html
