Summary Wikipedia is turning 20 (January 15th), and as a part of the celebration, they have announced that they are planning to redesign its website. Hi guys, I'm looking to create a complete offline version of Wikipedia on one of my servers at work. Already have the ~30GB version which doesn't include web links or images and would like to attempt to download the complete version somehow (expecting this to be in the region of 5-10TB). Hey Linus, I challenge you to fit ALL of Wikipedia onto a kindle. Believe it or not, Wikipedia has all of it's articles available for download (as of June 2015) on this 3rd party website The Rules - You have a $1000 budget - External Storage is allowed, but it has to be flush (like a micro SD expansion slot on an S7), no external drives or anything like that, and you can't make the case bigger or use any wireless drives. - Internal Storage upgrades are allowed as well (cramming in an SSD or upgrading flash within the case). - You need to be able to access all of the books without any network connections or Bluetooth. - You must use the most up to date version of Wikipedia available if there is another. - The table of contents isn't required - It can be in the form of more than one book, if putting it in one book would take forever, but someone has to be able to scroll through that list in under a minute. - Bonus points if it isn't slower than an Apple 2 running Crysis 3 at max settings - Bonus points if it can run Crysis afterwards - The total weight can't be more than 750 grams - It has to be portable afterwards - The internals can be modified to open up space, as long as any replacement parts are at the same level or better than the previous, and the battery lasts at least 30% as long as the original device while reading. - You can use an off the shelf case for the kindle, but keep in mind the weight limit - You need to be able to use it as a kindle, so no firmware flashing or anything of the sort. The Turkish government blocked access to Wikipedia recently, citing national security concerns. This has opened Turkey up to further criticism from human rights watchdogs. There's way more info in the articles, so if you're interested, check them out. Since political discussions have been banned on this forum, I'll have to keep my opinion somewhat short. This is worrying, because not only are they restricting their citizens' access to other people through certain social media blocks, but they're now directly and openly blocking access to large sources of information. It's starting to look like the Ministry of Truth. This is not strictly pertaining to Turkey, but it has to do with freedom speech and information: this has become a problem all over the world now, not just in the Middle East, China, etc., but in the West as well. It's extremely worrying, and the fact that this isn't an extremely popular subject of discussion and public outcry is also worrying -- we're rolling over and letting the government do whatever it wants to us. So I thought about this idea and I want to know if there is an app for it (idealy on iOS) that, in a very similar way to StumbleUpon, just randomly goes through the articles on the Wikipedia:Unusual Articles. Alternativly is there a way you can set up another app, e.g. FlipBoard/Stumble Upon, that would do this operation? Cheers Xvantok

Recently, I've noticed that Wikipedia pages stopped loading for me. Everything other website works fine but not Wikipedia. This problem is on all browsers.

Looks like Wikipedia needs to tighten up who it gives rights to edit pages like this, content that will naturally cause outrage. If the NYPD is that upset with how content is written and how they will be viewed, perhaps they should engage in actions that wouldn't make them look like idiots in front of the whole world int the first place. As you may know, a few months ago Wikipedia released a downloadable archive of all the articles on wikipedia at that point. The files can be run with some HTML stuff a hardware guy like me doesn't understand, or they can be opened with programs like Aard Dictionary. So my plan is to make a storage box of sorts, where I will have all these files on a HDD array of some sorts. It will be kindof like a NAS, but it won't have any processing power alone, to avoid data corruption, failure, or other errors. I won't be always on, and the only things I will ever put on the drives are the Wikipedia files, and anything that is required to open them. Planned parts and more (open for suggestions): 2x WD RE 500gb Drives (think it's enough space, have not fully downloaded the files yet, so i don't know how large they are uncompressed, on the page they are warning you a lot about it) Double waterproofed out ports, one for each drive (will make these myself with some cables and connectors and stuff) Waterproof acrylic/other plastic inner box Skeleton armor around acrylic box (made from carbon fibre or some other solid material) Some kind of reliant small power supply (really need suggestions here, I know nothing about PSU's) I will in some way put the wikipedia logo on the window to the drives, preferably by ethcing them into the acrylic, but I don't have any equipment for that. Then there will be a compartment on the back with paper printed instructions, telling anyone who may ever find this how to use it. There will be text in atleast 10 languages, and pictures demonstrating how to connect all the things, as well as showing how to use the software in different operating systems. This is supposed to be a treasure chest of knowledge, to show the future what we knew at this point in time, or to re teach our future selves after a point of apocalypse, world war, or just after everyone has become dumb and everything is run by computers. This knowledge is to valuable to be lost, and I think storing it offline will be the best way to protect it. I know there are probably other people storing this data as well, but the more people that do it, the more likely it is to live forever. And ofcourse I want to make mine special, thats why i don't just slap the data on a drive and hide it in my closet. This will be a treasure, something extremely valuable to me. I will have it as a trophy, a backup and as a way to show others how important it is to do backups of everything So what do you think? any suggestions? As soon as I get materials together, and the massive files has finished downloading, I will begin building this.
